Shades of Jazz Collector

Redd copyFreddie Redd, Shades of Redd, Blue Note 4045. This was an original West 63rd pressing, listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. I had it on my watch list because I was actually considering a bid for it. As loyal readers know, this one has been my nemesis for years. I forgot to put in a bid because I am still buried in work and also having computer problems, so I let it pass. Wouldn’t have mattered anyway. It sold for $762, which is quite a bit more than I would pay for the record, particularly in VG+ condition. I think there’s something to be said about waiting and waiting for the records you want, and going through the hunt, rather than filling in your gaps by paying a lot of money on eBay. I have enough records if I want to listen, and if I really want to listen to Shades of Redd I have two nice Japanese pressings, one in each home. I can wait, and I can hunt.

A separate “Red” listing from the same seller inspired a note from our friend CeeDee, as follows: “I thought that this one my slip by, but NOOOOOOO. Better luck next time.” The listing in question:

Red Rodney 1957, Signal 1206. This one was listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. Given the condition, you might agree with CeeDee that this one might have slipped by. But, as he says, NOOOOOOO. This one sold for $1,214. Red Rodney, welcome to the $1,000 bin.

Back to my watch list and back again to the $1,000 bin: Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This was an original pressing this is described to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,377.

  • I thought the seller of The Cooker and his “most prisitine” Leon Leavitt pieces had screwed a few people, most notably a supposed M-/M- copy of 1568.

  • The Cooker had a 2nd pressing cover with the INC. Unbelievable to pay that much for a copy with a 2nd art cover. I wonder if the winner didn’t check this… probably not, or maybe the winner is a novice.

  • i LOVE hunting for bargains. got a copy of my number one most wanted record recently in M- condition for about 1/3 of what typical eBay prices are. local record store just happened to have one. go figure.

of course, the want list is still several dozen records long.

  • Holy crap, that’s a lot of money for a VG Red Rodney record, even the Signal LP. Although I seem to recall another one sold for well over $1,000 a few years ago. Yikes.

  • The Rodney on Signal is one of the rarest of the rare, almost never comes up in decent condition. I have a copy with a M- vinyl and a VG+ cover. Extremely rare, extremely good sounding ( the recording sound is phenomenal ) and extremely nice record. An absolute must in any high-end collection with good taste.

  • Isn’t there a later pressing of the Rodney?

  • The Rodney has a later pressing on Savoy. Sounds very good also.

  • I just recalled it is calles “Fiery” and I have a quite late Savoy pressing (red label)

  • There’s also a Classic Records 200 gm reissue of the Red Rodney LP, if I’m not mistaken.

  • The Savoy is what I was thinking of, thanks. I’ll keep an eye out for it.

  • Clifford: keep an eye out for the one on Signal would be my recommendation. It’s worth every penny you spend on it. Fantastic in it’s original, 1st pressing form.

  • Ha, way, way out of my price range but you never know…

  • I was watching Shaddes of Redd as well … it is also a painful gap in my collection …
