Spellbound!

Nina simoneJust catching up on my eBay watch list and thought I’d share some items of interest that are still lingering from the past couple of weeks. Not to overly beat an already beaten dead horse, but this one is still in my queue from the Dr. Herb Wong auctions by the seller funkyousounds: Nina Simone, I Put a Spell on You, Philips 600-172. This was a stereo promo pressing in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $530, which was a shocker to me. I took a look at Popsike to get comparables and was surprised to see that this record had sold for $150 to $200 in the past. I didn’t ever think of it as a collectible, but I guess these days I’ll have to readjust because the market seems to be changing before our very eyes. Still, $530 was quite a leap from the previous top price for this record.

Hank Mobley Quartet, Blue Note 5066. This was an original 10-inch pressing with the Lexington Avenue address. The record and cover are listed in Ex condition, which I interpret as VG+ with a little background noise on the vinyl. There were 27 bids for this one and the final price was $780. More Mobley: Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This was an original pressing with the New York 23 labels. The record and cover were in VG+ condition, although the pictures gave a better impression. The final price was $1,611.

  • Is there any explanation for the ridiculous high bids on “funkyousounds” ? I would be a millionair if I could sell my collection for these prices!

  • JRR had some nice 10″ records in that auction.

  • I picked up a VG+ original press of Little Girl Blue for under $30 a few weeks ago. Makes me feel like a winner when I read today’s post. 500 for Nina? Sheesh.

  • OK, this is odd, while checking out the Hank Mobley 1550 completed auction I noticed a Bill Evans Waltz for Debby that looked familiar. I think the seller changed
his ebay Id and has sold some of these lps several times. Am I wrong?

  • the JRR auction prices were much more in line with those seen historically than the ones funkysounds has been receiving as of late. i have no idea if the condition will match the description, however. i bought three so i hope so.

  • woody: what bizarre presentation of the items, too!

  • Woody,
Thanks for pointing that out. It appears that vj21vj joined eBay Aug 05, 2015 and caluvere joined Sep 09, 2015, not saying that this is the case but it would be perfect if you want to have one account place shill bids for the other.

  • Gregorythefish:, Aaron:, At first I assumed that the seller was running some kind of scam but there is also the possibility that the seller just doesn’t know how to grade or list records. His layout has gotten a little bit more extensive with each listing. The Waltz For Debby now has complete mp3 files of both sides. He describes both sides as NM- but if you listen you can hear occasional repetitive clicks. The last 2 times it sold for over $1,700 but was returned(?), with the sound samples maybe $1,125 is the right price.

  • Wow, repetitive clicks and seller getting $1,125.00!!?!>@^(*&*)()(*!!!!
I sold a Getz ten inch on Roost for $12.00 that had a click and buyer(rightly so, as I forgot to list in description) demanded their money back.
Where do I sign up to get $1000.00 buyers for VG records?

  • Well as usual some sour grapes! In all my collecting ,without using the Internet by the way,my relationship with the seller is personal. If the record does not make me happy when I spin it at home then I go back and return it or we settle for lower price. This is what we BOTH want! I know that now days this still happens on the Internet but the trouble is getting worse for seller and buyer. Support your local record store!

  • Aside from the “insane” prices and bidding, the Herb Wong collection has so many other fascinating aspects to discuss:
The opportunity to thumb through what was left of this legendary collection
The management of a large collection, and part of jazz collecting is volume
    Jazz collecting: The Completist Nightmare
The collection as a portrait of the collector (focus of collection)

Not that I’d want to distract anyone from those “crazy prices”

  • And I agree with Art. Support your local record store!

  • Agree AK, everybody should be happy and all endings should be blissful and no I didn’t mean to come across as “sour grapes,” I meant to come across as sarcastic.
