Tracking Some Jazz Vinyl in Top Condition
The Jazz Record Center has a new auction up on eBay. I don’t usually follow particular sellers, but I like to follow their auctions because the records they sell are usually in beautiful condition and because they are such a highly respected seller. What they sell is often a current gauge of the market. Here are a few from their current auction, starting with: Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1549. This is an original pressing that looks to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is $500 and there is already a bidder.
Miles Davis, Sketches of Spain, Columbia 1480. This is an original deep groove six-eye pressing. I don’t normally think of this as a collectible record, but this one has a start price of $75. We’ll see if it generates interest. It is in beautiful, near new condition.
This is another we don’t often watch here at Jazz Collector:
Max Roach, Deeds Not Words, Riverside 280. This is an original blue label pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is $100.
How about one more Blue Note: Dexter Gordon, A Swingin’ Affair, Blue Note 4133. This is an original New York USA pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is $150. Interesting to see that some of the later Blue Notes, from artists such as Sam Rivers and Grachan Moncur III, were getting much higher prices than this. We’ll see where this one ends up.
Looks like Fred has the Pat Patrick on Saturn up as well. That’s quite a tough one to track down – I’ll be curious to see what it goes for.
A recent ebay auction saw a 78 by Roy Porter on Rex Hollywood fetch more than $1700! This should be covered by your website.
On the flip side from perfect.. Woah! http://www.ebay.com/itm/HANK-MOBLEY-Self-Titled-BLUE-NOTE-1568-LP-W-63rd-mono-/310578616770?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item484fed99c2&_uhb=1
Andy-that is a LOT of bread to spend for pure filler(although the cover condition was not so horrendous,I think?) However, anytime I see “G+”,all I can think is “snap,crackle..and pop”.

Let’s consider this the most expensive cornflakes box ever.
That is an absurd price for an obliterated Mobley LP!
I have purchased some items from this seller in the past and he really grades conservatively.
His items graded VG are graded VG+/VG++ by most of the others.
I believe the bidders on Mobley’s 1568 knew that very well 🙂
Gandi.. I’ve bought several albums form this guy as well.. most he lists as VG-, I’ve never got a clinker from him. However, this Mobley seems pretty busted up.. just from the description of the cover alone.
Andy, agreed – the cover condition (both description and the picture) would discourage me from bidding high (not to mention above 1000$…). But if the record would turn out solid VG, it would be easier to look for a totally thrashed record with skips in a nice cover, right?
