24 Hours on Ebay, Redux

monkSo while perusing my 24 hours on eBay I found two listings so tempting I had to place a bid. Well, I didn’t have to, but if you’re reading this site you know exactly what I mean. Here’s one of the records: Thelonious Monk, Genius of Modern Music Volume 2. This was clearly an original 10-inch pressing. The seller described it as being in VG++ condition for the record and “very good” for the cover, although the cover looked quite nice in the listing. There were about four hours left in the auction when I came upon the listing and there were no bidders with a start price of $85. I looked again at the listing, and I couldn’t figure out why there was no interest. Then I looked at the shelves in my office and, alas, there is no copy of this record in my collection. Perhaps, I figured, I could get this record at what I would consider to be a reasonable price, which would have been anything under $125 or so. So I put in a snipe bid, waited, waited some more, went onto eBay and, tada, I won the auction at $90. Three bidders came in at the end, but the second highest was only $89. This will be a nice addition to my collection: Another 10-inch Blue Note to fill in a gap. Hopefully my guess about the condition is correct.

A Yellow Book And One (VG) for the $3,000 Bin

bookOK, I just went to my Watch List on eBay and it looks like they have changed the view, all with the idea of trying to get you to buy more stuff. Lovely. Progress, I guess. I think I can still find things, such as: Booker Ervin, The Song Book, Prestige 7318. This was an original pressing with the yellow label, one of the last of the yellows for sure. It was in Ex+ condition, which I assume is pretty close to M-, for both the record and the cover. This is quite a great record, certainly one of Book’s best. It sold for $263.99.

And now we enter the $3,000 bin: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad-Lib 6601. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record and only VG — VG — for the cover. It sold for $3,050. I thought collectors cared about covers. I know I do.

Cool cover on this one: Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige 185. This was an original 10-inch pressing in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ condition for the cover. It sold for $268.

 

 

Catching Up With The Jazz Collector Price Guide

dolphyI am taking advantage of the holiday time to update the Jazz Collector Price Guide, which could use some new records. So for the next couple of days, at least, I’ll be following up on records I mentioned earlier, or some I never mentioned at all and somehow missed the first time around. Here goes:

Boy did I have my eyes on this one: Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk, Prestige 190. This was an original 10-inch pressing in what looked to be VG++ condition for the record and probably VG for the cover. When I was pondering this there were a few hours to go and the price was just in the $110 range. It wound up selling for $430.

Eric Dolphy, Out to Lunch, Blue Note 84163. This was an original stereo pressing in just VG+ condition for the record and the cover, but it was packaged very nicely and we anticipated it would get a nice bid. It did, topping out at $303.

This was a strange one: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad-Lib 6601. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. When we first wrote about it, we noted that there was a buy-it-now price of $2,000. We figured someone would grab it up at that price. No one did. However, the bidding ended up at $1,975. Seems to me if you were willing to bid as much as $1,975 for the record, just buy it for $2,000 and save yourself the stress and aggravation.

 

A Newk 10-Inch LP, Prized Stereo Blue Notes

sonnyI should watch this record on Jazz Collector each time it appears on eBay, just so I can put the picture of the cover on the site: Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk, Prestige 190. This is an original 10-inch LP in Ex+ condition for the vinyl and VG for the cover. I would think the record plays really well to be graded Ex+. As you may tell from the longing in my first sentence I do not own a copy of this record. But I would love to. This one is in the $110 range with less than a day to go, although it hasn’t yet reached the seller’s reserve price.

Herbie Hancock, Takin’ Off, Blue Note 84109. This looks to be an original stereo pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Not sure how the stereo compares with the mono, either in sound or in collectibility, but, for me, I’m quite content to have the original mono pressing. This one closes sometime today and is in the range of about $105 with eight bids.

Eric Dolphy, Out To Lunch, Blue Note 84163. The seller does a nice job of presenting/packing this one, with the nice picture and the original inner sleeve. Makes it look attractive, wouldn’t you say? This is a stereo pressing, looks like an original, with the ear, Van Gelder and New York USA label.  Bidding closes tomorrow and is already over more than $200. So, IMHO, the nice packaging seems to help.

 

 

Collectibility in the Eye of the Beholder

I imagine this is a great record, but someone needs to refresh my memory as to why it is so highly coveted by collectors that the price for this is now nearly $400 and will likely exceed $500 or much more when all is said and done: Wynton Kelly, Kelly at Midnight, Vee Jay 3001. This is a stereo pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Is it the stereo pressing and the “stereophonic” lettering on the cover? Vee Jays usually don’t have this type of cachet, nor do Wynton Kelly trio records.

Think this one will sell? Presenting Ernie Henry, Riverside 222. This is a blue label pressing so it is not an original, which would have the white label. The record and cover are in VG+ condition. The seller has set an opening bid of about $200 and so far there are no bids at all, with the auction closing later today. My take: If it was in M- condition as a blue-label second press it might sell for $200, but in VG+ condition, I have my doubts.

A Promo, a 10-Inch LP, And a “Later” Blue Note

Here’s some more jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay now:

Horace Silver, The Cape Verdean Blues, Blue Note 4220. This is an original mono pressing with the Van Gelder and the ear and, of course, no deep grooves. The record is in M- condition and the cover is M- as well, with the original shrink wrap. There’s more than a day left in the auction and the bidding is in the $150 range. Nice record. As we’re seeing with the Bobby Hutcherson records mentioned yesterday, as well as others we’ve been watching, the later pre-Liberty Blue Notes seem to be going up in value by quite a bit recently. It’s interesting to think of “later” Blue Notes as records that are pretty close to 50 years from their original release.

Here’s an early Blue Note from a familiar and highly reputable seller: Kenny Drew Trio, Blue Note 5023. This is an original 10-nch pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Quite a beauty. Perhaps only one owner? The start price is about $200 and, with two days to go, there are no bidders.

Pick A Peck Of Pepper and Blue Notes

Let’s start with a pinch of pepper: Art Pepper, Modern Art, Intro 606. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and Exc for the cover. There are more than two days to go and the bidding is already more than $900. The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West 10. This is an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The auction closes tomorrow and the bidding is nearly $200.

And now for some 10-inch Blue Notes. The Amazing Bud Powell, Volume 2, Blue Note 5041. This is an original 10-inch pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. I love the cover on this one and I don’t have a copy. There are three days left in the auction and the bidding is still in the $100 range, but it won’t stay there for long. From the same seller is Clifford Brown, New Star on the Horizon, Blue Note 5032. This one is also in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. Bidding is at $150 with four days to go. And one more while we’re at it: Horace Silver Trio, Art Blakey with Sabu, Blue Note 5034. The record and cover are in Exc condition, which I guess is near VG++ but not quite? This one closes in a few hours and is in the $250 range.

 

 

Chet, Miles, Zoot, Sonny Clark

Back to eBay with a few more recent jazz vinyl auctions, starting with: Chet Baker, Chet, Riverside 299. This looks to be an original pressing in VG+ condition. It sold for $337, which is the highest price we’ve ever recorded for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide (although, admittedly, this is not one that have have often followed). Why such a high price tag for this one? It’s got to be the presence of Bill Evans on piano, right?

Sonny Clark Trio, Blue Note 1579. This is an original West 63rd pressing listed in VG+ condition with some minor scratches and EXC for the cover, which seems to be equivalent to VG++ based on the seller’s description. It sold for $760. It used to be records had to be in near mint condition, or close to near mint, to fetch those kinds of collectible prices, but no more. There is a huge demand for any of these high-end collectibles in any condition, and certainly in any condition that will give you a good listening experience.

Five For the Watch List

I just spent some time perusing jazz vinyl listings on eBay and, my, I was able to fill up my watch list quickly. Here are some of the items, starting with: Pepper Adams, Donald Byrd, et al, Motor City Scene, Bethlehem 6056.  This is a rare one you don’t see very often. In fact, I don’t recall ever seeing a copy of this record in any store or any collection. This one is in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. It closes in a couple of hours and the bidding is at $450.

 The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West JWLP 10. This looks to be an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and probably VG or a little better for the cover, based on the seller’s description. It also closes today and the bidding is in the low $200 range.

Temptation is back: Freddie Redd, Shades of Redd, Blue Note 4045. This looks to be an original pressing listed in Ex condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. There are two days to go and the bidding is in the $250 range. Father’s Day is in a few weeks. Hmmm.

Some 10-Inch LPs and Some Bird Envy

Here are some of the results from the Jazz Record Center auctions we were watching, including the one with the cover that has some of our readers weirded out. Let’s start with Kenny Dorham Quintet, Debut 9. This is an original 10-inch pressing, quite rare, that looked to be in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $960.

Charlie Mariano, Mariano, Bethlehem 1022. This was another 10-inch record from the collection of Tom Stewart and like the others the record was in M- condition and the cover probably VG++, with the owner’s name written in ink. This one sold for $355.

Now for the one with the weird cover, Red Mitchell, Happy Minors, Bethlehem 1033. This was from the same collection, M- for the record, VG++ for the cover. It sold for $333.88. So far I haven’t found a copy in my own collection. If I didn’t buy it originally for $50, I can say for pretty sure that it was because of the cover. Not one of my favorites, to be sure.
