Today on eBay: Tracking Some 10-Inch LPs

I was watching the discussion about 10-inch LPs elsewhere on the site (click here) when I started doing my daily perusal of eBay and came upon a nice batch of 10-inch LPs being sold today by Euclid Records. We’ll see what this records eventually sell for but, if current price is any indication, maybe there’s something to the theory that interest in 10-inch LPs is declining. Of course, these things often run in cycles as well. Here are some of the items worth watching today:

Jay Jay Johnson, Blue Note 5028. This is a 10-inch LP featuring Clifford Brown being sold by Euclid Records. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is just $67, which doesn’t mean it won’t sell for a lot more. Also from Euclid on the 10-inch front: Dexter Gordon, New Sounds in Modern Music, Savoy 9003. This is an original pressing. The record is VG+ and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $30.

Also for sale today is a nice copy of a record we expect to sell for more than $1,000:

Today on EBay: Miles, Monk, Warhol and More

We’re back after taking the weekend off. The week on eBay gets off to a decent start today, with a few nice items to watch for the Jazz Collector Price Guide. We have a few items of our own closing today, including: Andrew Hill, Compulsion, Blue Note 4217. This is a mono pressing with the New York USA label and is in V++/VG+ condition. It’s only $25, so it might end up being a bargain for someone. We’re also watching these items, from other sellers:

Miles Davis, The Musings of Miles, Prestige 7007. This is an original mono pressing with the New York label from Euclid Records. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $130. I’m not sure how many of you ever go through the archives at Jazz Collector, but there are a lot of interesting items from the past that are worth finding. For instance, back in May 2004, I did a small birthday tribute to Miles (he would have been 78) and at the end I listed my Top Five Miles Davis records. I mention this, because this record, The Musings of Miles, was on that list. Click here to check it out. Read more

Price Updates: Blue Train, Bud, Miles and More

Here are some items we’ll be adding to the Jazz Collector Price Guide over the weekend. If you haven’t checked out the Price Guide lately, it’s time to come back. We’ve added a new feature, where you can browse all of the records on one screen and sort it either by artist, label or price. It’s a lot of fun just to go through the lists and compare and contrast. It’s also very helpful when buying or selling items on eBay. Anyway, speaking of eBay, here are some recent sales:

John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was an original pressing in M- condition. The price was $710.

The Amazing Bud Powell, Blue Note 5003. This was an original 10-inch LP in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $380.

Miles Davis, Miles, Prestige 7014. This was an original New York pressing. The record

Today on eBay: Does Sonny + 4 = 100?

I’m playing with the idea of doing a post or a series of posts on the topic: “100 Records I Would Keep If I Could Only Keep 100 Records.” It’s sort of a growing fantasy to shed possessions and keep only what is necessary. I bring this up because one of the records that would certainly make the Top Ten of my list is currently available on eBay: Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This is an original New York pressing on the vinyl. But is it the original cover, or is the original cover the one with the red and purple design? Let’s see who knows the answer out there. In any case, this one looks to be in nice condition, VG++, and is currently a bit more than $100.

Ebay Versus The Storefront: A Cultural Shift

The thing with eBay: The inventory replenishes every day, by at least several hundred new items. It’s much different than when we used to buy our records in physical stores. If you didn’t get to your favorite store for a few weeks, you may not have missed anything. Or, if you happened to walk in at just the right time, you might have been in luck for a major score. With eBay, you get the sense that if you miss something one day, don’t worry, it’ll eventually come back. The challenge with eBay, versus the traditional record stores, is that there is only one item and you are competing on price with every other collector in the world. That’s one of the reasons the prices on eBay are high versus what you might find in a store, and why so many of the top sellers — such as Euclid and Jazz Record Center and Atomic — do a lot of their business on eBay these days.  What do you think? If you comment on this post, you can be eligible to win the free Leo Parker Blue Note record we’re giving away.

Today on EBay, February 16, 2009

Where is everybody? We’re giving away a free record — Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note 84095 — and all you have to do to qualify for the contest is to comment on the Jazz Collector site, anwhere, even on items three or four years old. So far, since we put the record up on Friday, we’ve had only a couple of comments. Perhaps jazz collectors aren’t interested in free records???????

Anyway, we hope to see more comments. While we wait, here are a few of the items we’re watching on eBay today: Coleman Hawkins, The Hawk Flies High, Riverside 233. Hawkins usually isn’t among the most collectible of artists, so this might wind up as a bit of a bargain. It’s an original pressing with the white label and it features JJ Johnson on trombone. The record is listed as M- and the cover looks to be VG+, at least. The current price is around $40. Read more

Time for Another Free Record

Okay, here we go again. So far we’ve given away three free records and now it’s time for number four: Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note BST 84095. This one actually has a little bit more credibility as a collectible than our previous giveaways. This is the 1986 release of this LP, which was the first time it was released with the cover art and catalog number that was originally intended by Blue Note in 1962. What’s more, this is a promo copy, with a promo stamp on the cover. The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is M- and it’s being offered free to one lucky reader of Jazz Collector. As before, the rules for entering this contest are very simple: All you have to do to be eligible to win the record is to post a comment on the Jazz Collector site any time between now and when the contest ends, which is the end of day February 26.  You can post a comment on this post or anywhere else on the site and we’ll enter you into the drawing. If you win the record we even pay for shipping, anywhere in the world. This is a very nice record, worth having for sure. In addition to Parker, it features Dave Burns, Bill Swindell, Johnny Acea, Stan Conover, Bill Lucas, Purnell Rice and Wilbert Hogan.

Speaking of Leo Parker, someone recently sent us a link to this eBay auction:
