Another $1,000 Item, Plus A Few More

We were right in predicting that this record would surpass the $1,000 barrier:  It was in near mint condition and it is a rare Blue Note and it was being sold by Euclid Records. We’ve seen it sell for more than $900 previously in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, so it was no surprise that this copy sold yesterday for $1,563.

Here are some of the other items we’ve been watching that will be entered into the Price Guide:

Wes Montgomery, Full House, Riverside 434. This was an original blue label pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $255. This is always one of the higher priced Montgomery collectibles, ostensibly aided by the presence of Johnny Griiffin on tenor.

Bobby Hutcherson, Happenings, Blue Note 4231. This was an original New York USA pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $221.40.

Paula Castle, Love Lost, Bethlehem 1036. This was an original 10-inch pressing in M-

Perhaps we’ll see another $1,000 record today. If so, this would be the one: John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This is an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It’s one of the items being sold today by Euclid Records. The current price is a bit more than $500 and there are still several hours to go. Euclid has a few other nice items up today, including Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition. The current price is about $80.

Some other items we’re watching here at Jazz Collector:

Paula Castle, Lost Love, Bethlehem 1036. This is a 10-inch LP that looks to be Read more

Today on Ebay, February 11, 2009

Quite a few mid-tier items up early on eBay today, so I am up early to post them. Here are a few:

We’ve been talking a lot about Andy Warhol covers on the site. Here’s a chance to get one, perhaps at a bargain price because the seller didn’t realize that the cover is by Warhol: Count Basie, RCA 1112. This is not in great shape, but it’s only $1.99 and closing fairly soon. A few weeks ago, we recorded one of these in the Jazz Collector Price Guide for $161.

The seller Tuneup Music has quite a large group of pretty nice records for sale this morning, including Blue Mitchell Big Six, Riverside 273. This is an original blue label pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The current price is $75. Also from this seller is a sealed copy of Larry Young, Into Something, Blue Note 84187. This is already at $125. The challenge with a sealed record is not knowing whether it’s an original label, so, personally, I’d be careful on this one. If you look at these records, you should click View Seller’s Other Items because there’s a lot more.

Today on Ebay, February 10, 2009

Pretty quiet on eBay today, although there are a few nice items, as always. We at Jazz Collector have a few auctions closing today, including: Art Farmer with Sonny Rollins, Prestige 177. This is a 10-inch LP. It’s in VG/VG+ condition and is currently in the $30 price range. We’re also selling this nice jazz guitar LP: Johnny Pisano and Billy Bean, Take Your Pick, Decca 9212. This is an original pressing that’s in VG+/VG++ condition and it’s also in the $30 range as of now. We’re also selling LPs with autographs by Woody Herman, plus George Barnes and Bucky Pizzarelli, so please, take a look.

Among other items, there’s an original pressing of Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This one looks to be in VG++ condition. the current price is $282, but it has yet to meet the seller’s reserve. As a buyer, I’m not a big fan of reserve-price auctions. I’d rather the seller set a high base price if he

A Few More Warhol Covers

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth on Jazz Collector recently about Andy Warhol covers. Here are a few more that sold recently, including a couple for pretty high prices. All of these will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide this week. These first two are from Euclid Records, so they received top dollar: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 1, Blue Note 1596. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $698.89. The second was Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This was a New York USA pressing without the deep groove. Clearly not a first pressing. It was in M- condition, record and cover. It sold for $343.88, which seems to tell us that the demand for these Warhols is pretty high right now. Another LP with a

A Few More For The $1,000 Club

We have a few more records to add to the roster of jazz vinyl selling for more than $1,000. Interesting, based on my post earlier in the week and all of the comments (Another eBay Debate: What’s The Value of A Dealer’s Reputation?), two of the new entries into the club were sold by the reputable seller Euclid Records. They are: Sonny Rollins, Volume 2, Blue Note 1558. This was an original pressing. The record and cover were both in M- condition. The price was $1,259.56. The other from Euclid was Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This was an original red label pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $1,281.  The third record selling for more than $1,000 was also one that was subject to quite a bit of discussion on the Jazz Collector Web Site (Today on Ebay, February 2, 2009). This was Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This was the one with the Andy Warhol cover that was only in VG condition and still sold for $2,350.

Today on Ebay, February 6, 2009

Here are some of the interesting items we are watching today at Jazz Collector:

Here’s one from a seller who has a zero rating on eBay: Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition, both record and cover. The current price is $285, which is pretty high considering the lack of information about the seller.

Here’s a personal favorite, with the original cover that Blue Note changed after the first issue: Art Blakey, A Night At Birdland Volume 2, Blue Note 1522. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record is listed as VG++ and the cover is VG. The current price is about $110.

Also, Yusef Lateef, Before Dawn, Verve 8217. This is an original pressing with the trumpeter logo. The record is listed in VG++ condition and the cover is VG. The current price is $68.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, there’s this:

Ellington and Trane on Broadway; Plus Serge Chaloff With and Without Sonny Clark

Some more for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, Impulse 30. This was an original white label promo copy. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $326. We’ve actually seen this go for slightly higher before. Interesting — I went to a play with Mrs. JC the other day (Mrs. Jazz Collector, not Mrs. John Coltrane), and they were using 1960s mood music between scenes. One of the tracks was from this album, In a Sentimental Mood. After the fourth note, I was able to identify it. Not difficult really — it’s a very recognizable version. Excellent play, by the way: The American Plan. Worth seeing if you’re in New York.

We were watching these two LPs from Serge Chaloff and questioning how big a difference the presence of Sonny Clark was have on impacting the price. Quite a bit, it turns out:

Catching Up With A Few Titles

Here are a few more we’ve added to the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Johnny Glasel, Jazz Session, ABC Paramount 165. This was an original pressing featuring Dick Garcia on guitar. The record  and cover were both in M- condition. The price was $86. We had asked if anyone knew much about this record. Turns out our good friend Dan Axelrod knew Johnny Glasel quite well. He was president of the musicians union in New York and a regular on club dates. I’ve asked Dan to fill in the blanks on some of this and he has promised to do that, so stay tuned.

Sheila Jordan, a Portrait of Sheila, Blue Note 9003. Speaking of jazz guitar (that was Dick Garcia we just mentioned), this LP features some great work by Barry Galbraith. This was an original pressing. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $79.16.

John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. This was an original black label in M- condition. The price was $154.27. A similar copy sold for more than $1,000 a few weeks ago. What was the difference? Who knows.
