Where is everybody? We’re giving away a free record — Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note 84095 — and all you have to do to qualify for the contest is to comment on the Jazz Collector site, anwhere, even on items three or four years old. So far, since we put the record up on Friday, we’ve had only a couple of comments. Perhaps jazz collectors aren’t interested in free records???????

Anyway, we hope to see more comments. While we wait, here are a few of the items we’re watching on eBay today: Coleman Hawkins, The Hawk Flies High, Riverside 233. Hawkins usually isn’t among the most collectible of artists, so this might wind up as a bit of a bargain. It’s an original pressing with the white label and it features JJ Johnson on trombone. The record is listed as M- and the cover looks to be VG+, at least. The current price is around $40. Read more

Getz & An Autographed Stitt for the Price Guide

Here are some records we’ve been watching at Jazz Collector and which will be entered soon into the Jazz Collector Price Guide. We’re big fans of the Verve label and we believe there are still bargains to be had among Verve, Norgran and Clef LPs. This one, however, usually fetches a pretty collectible price, as it did recently with two separate copies: Stan Getz in Stockholm, Verve 8213. One of these was sold by Euclid Records and went for $210.50 in M- condition, both record and cover. The other copy was sold by a relatively new seller and was in VG++ condition, both record and cover, and it sold for $205.50.

We often like to watch autographed copies of records signed by our favorite artists. Here’s one: Sonny Stitt, Prestige 7024. This was an original New York pressing signed by Stitt. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. The price was $133.61.

Some of the items we watch fail to get any bids. Here’s one: Donald Byrd, Byrd’s Eye View, Transition 4. This was in VG condition, both record and cover, and did not have a booklet. The starting price was $349 and there were no bids. We used to keep track of these in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, but not anymore. Now we track records that actually sell.

Today on EBay, Feburary 13, 2009

We mentioned yesterday that both Euclid Records and The Jazz Record Center would have some nice items up for auction today. Here are a few of them, starting with Eucid: The Ideation of Kenny Drew, Norgran 29. This is an original 10-inch LP in M- condition, both record and cover. The current price is a little more than $200. Also, The Elmo Hope Trio, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5029. This is an original 10-inch LP in M- condition. The current price is about $240. From The Jazz Record Center: The Bill Evans Trio, Portrait in Jazz, Riverside 315. This is an original pressing. The vinyl is M- and the cover looks to be VG++. The current price is $255. If you want to see what else these two leading sellers are auctioning today, go to these links and then view their other items.

Another $1,000 Item, Plus A Few More

We were right in predicting that this record would surpass the $1,000 barrier:  It was in near mint condition and it is a rare Blue Note and it was being sold by Euclid Records. We’ve seen it sell for more than $900 previously in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, so it was no surprise that this copy sold yesterday for $1,563.

Here are some of the other items we’ve been watching that will be entered into the Price Guide:

Wes Montgomery, Full House, Riverside 434. This was an original blue label pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $255. This is always one of the higher priced Montgomery collectibles, ostensibly aided by the presence of Johnny Griiffin on tenor.

Bobby Hutcherson, Happenings, Blue Note 4231. This was an original New York USA pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $221.40.

Paula Castle, Love Lost, Bethlehem 1036. This was an original 10-inch pressing in M-

Perhaps we’ll see another $1,000 record today. If so, this would be the one: John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This is an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It’s one of the items being sold today by Euclid Records. The current price is a bit more than $500 and there are still several hours to go. Euclid has a few other nice items up today, including Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition. The current price is about $80.

Some other items we’re watching here at Jazz Collector:

Bargains? It’s All The Eyes of the Beholder

Based on a suggestion from one of our readers, we tried to point out a few potential bargains on eBay this week, as we always do. How’d we do? Mixed, I would say. The first one was Phil Woods, Warm Woods, Epic 3436 (you can find the link if you just do a search on the site, which is that little gray bar at the top right). When we spotted this record it was priced at just $30 with only a few hours left in the auction. But, clearly, there were some major bidders waiting in the weeds. The record eventually sold for $434.77. The vinyl was in M- condition and the cover was VG++. Yesterday we pointed out a copy of Count Basie, RCA 1112. This one has a cover by Andy Warhol and has sold for more than $160 in the past. When we spotted this one, it was at $1.99 and sold a few hours later for just $20, so that seems like a bargain in our book. It’s always dangerous for us to go bargain-hunting on the Jazz Collector site: Once we point out the record, it’s no longer a hidden gem but out there for the world to see. So we’ll try our best to be fairly discrete in our pronouncements.

Today on Ebay, February 11, 2009

Quite a few mid-tier items up early on eBay today, so I am up early to post them. Here are a few:

We’ve been talking a lot about Andy Warhol covers on the site. Here’s a chance to get one, perhaps at a bargain price because the seller didn’t realize that the cover is by Warhol: Count Basie, RCA 1112. This is not in great shape, but it’s only $1.99 and closing fairly soon. A few weeks ago, we recorded one of these in the Jazz Collector Price Guide for $161.

The seller Tuneup Music has quite a large group of pretty nice records for sale this morning, including Blue Mitchell Big Six, Riverside 273. This is an original blue label pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The current price is $75. Also from this seller is a sealed copy of Larry Young, Into Something, Blue Note 84187. This is already at $125. The challenge with a sealed record is not knowing whether it’s an original label, so, personally, I’d be careful on this one. If you look at these records, you should click View Seller’s Other Items because there’s a lot more.

Today on Ebay, February 10, 2009

Pretty quiet on eBay today, although there are a few nice items, as always. We at Jazz Collector have a few auctions closing today, including: Art Farmer with Sonny Rollins, Prestige 177. This is a 10-inch LP. It’s in VG/VG+ condition and is currently in the $30 price range. We’re also selling this nice jazz guitar LP: Johnny Pisano and Billy Bean, Take Your Pick, Decca 9212. This is an original pressing that’s in VG+/VG++ condition and it’s also in the $30 range as of now. We’re also selling LPs with autographs by Woody Herman, plus George Barnes and Bucky Pizzarelli, so please, take a look.

Among other items, there’s an original pressing of Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This one looks to be in VG++ condition. the current price is $282, but it has yet to meet the seller’s reserve. As a buyer, I’m not a big fan of reserve-price auctions. I’d rather the seller set a high base price if he

A Few More Warhol Covers

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth on Jazz Collector recently about Andy Warhol covers. Here are a few more that sold recently, including a couple for pretty high prices. All of these will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide this week. These first two are from Euclid Records, so they received top dollar: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 1, Blue Note 1596. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $698.89. The second was Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This was a New York USA pressing without the deep groove. Clearly not a first pressing. It was in M- condition, record and cover. It sold for $343.88, which seems to tell us that the demand for these Warhols is pretty high right now. Another LP with a

Today on eBay, Some Jug and Dizzy Reece

A few nice items on eBay today, including a nice bunch closing soon from our friends at Euclid Records. There may even be another one for the $1,000 club, this one: Dizzy Reece, Soundin’ Off, Blue Note 4033. This is an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. The current price is more than $600 and there have already been 17 bids, so it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that this could hit four figures. Also from Euclid and Dizzy: Dizzy Reece, Star Bright, Blue Note 4023. This is also an original pressing. The record is listed as M- and the cover is listed as VG+. The current price is in the $250 range. One more from this batch: Jammin’ in Hi-Fi With Gene Ammons, Prestige 7110. This is an original pressing with the New York label. The record and cover are in M- condition. The current price is just more than $200.

Another one we’re watching at Jazz Collector is Zoot Sims, Cookin’ Fontana 123. This is an original British pressing. The record looks to be VG and the cover is VG+. It’s currently around $50. We’ve seen this sell for more than $200 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, but those earlier copies were in better condition.
