Also, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia, Volume 2, Blue Note 1508. This was also an original Lexington Avenue pressing. This one was in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $416.

Today on EBay: Miles, Monk, Warhol and More

We’re back after taking the weekend off. The week on eBay gets off to a decent start today, with a few nice items to watch for the Jazz Collector Price Guide. We have a few items of our own closing today, including: Andrew Hill, Compulsion, Blue Note 4217. This is a mono pressing with the New York USA label and is in V++/VG+ condition. It’s only $25, so it might end up being a bargain for someone. We’re also watching these items, from other sellers:

Miles Davis, The Musings of Miles, Prestige 7007. This is an original mono pressing with the New York label from Euclid Records. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $130. I’m not sure how many of you ever go through the archives at Jazz Collector, but there are a lot of interesting items from the past that are worth finding. For instance, back in May 2004, I did a small birthday tribute to Miles (he would have been 78) and at the end I listed my Top Five Miles Davis records. I mention this, because this record, The Musings of Miles, was on that list. Click here to check it out. Read more

Price Updates: Blue Train, Bud, Miles and More

Here are some items we’ll be adding to the Jazz Collector Price Guide over the weekend. If you haven’t checked out the Price Guide lately, it’s time to come back. We’ve added a new feature, where you can browse all of the records on one screen and sort it either by artist, label or price. It’s a lot of fun just to go through the lists and compare and contrast. It’s also very helpful when buying or selling items on eBay. Anyway, speaking of eBay, here are some recent sales:

John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was an original pressing in M- condition. The price was $710.

The Amazing Bud Powell, Blue Note 5003. This was an original 10-inch LP in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $380.

Miles Davis, Miles, Prestige 7014. This was an original New York pressing. The record

Sonny Plus 4, The Real Deal

Yesterday we posed the question about the original cover to Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. Michel provided us with the correct answer and here, from our own collection, is a picture of the original cover. By commenting on the site, Michel became eligible to win the Leo Parker record on Blue Note that we are giving away. There’s only a little bit more than a week left in the contest, so please comment on the site if you would like to be eligible to win it. By the way, the copy of Sonny Rollins Plus Four that was on eBay yesterday, wound up selling for $165.

Today on eBay: Does Sonny + 4 = 100?

I’m playing with the idea of doing a post or a series of posts on the topic: “100 Records I Would Keep If I Could Only Keep 100 Records.” It’s sort of a growing fantasy to shed possessions and keep only what is necessary. I bring this up because one of the records that would certainly make the Top Ten of my list is currently available on eBay: Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This is an original New York pressing on the vinyl. But is it the original cover, or is the original cover the one with the red and purple design? Let’s see who knows the answer out there. In any case, this one looks to be in nice condition, VG++, and is currently a bit more than $100.

More on EBay Today

Here are a few other items we’re watching on eBay today. Actually, we’ll start with an item that we’re selling: Hampton Hawes, For Real, Contemporary 3589. This is an original yellow label pressing in VG+/VG condition. It is currently priced at $25. Also noteworthy about this album is the touching obituary for bassist Scott La Faro, who was killed in a car accident July 6, 1961 as the liner notes to the album were being printed. There’s also a nice picture of La Faro on the back cover. We have several other items closing today and tomorrow, so please take a look.

From other sellers, here are some items worth watching:

Today on EBay, February 16, 2009

Where is everybody? We’re giving away a free record — Leo Parker, Rollin’ With Leo, Blue Note 84095 — and all you have to do to qualify for the contest is to comment on the Jazz Collector site, anwhere, even on items three or four years old. So far, since we put the record up on Friday, we’ve had only a couple of comments. Perhaps jazz collectors aren’t interested in free records???????

Anyway, we hope to see more comments. While we wait, here are a few of the items we’re watching on eBay today: Coleman Hawkins, The Hawk Flies High, Riverside 233. Hawkins usually isn’t among the most collectible of artists, so this might wind up as a bit of a bargain. It’s an original pressing with the white label and it features JJ Johnson on trombone. The record is listed as M- and the cover looks to be VG+, at least. The current price is around $40. Read more

Getz & An Autographed Stitt for the Price Guide

Here are some records we’ve been watching at Jazz Collector and which will be entered soon into the Jazz Collector Price Guide. We’re big fans of the Verve label and we believe there are still bargains to be had among Verve, Norgran and Clef LPs. This one, however, usually fetches a pretty collectible price, as it did recently with two separate copies: Stan Getz in Stockholm, Verve 8213. One of these was sold by Euclid Records and went for $210.50 in M- condition, both record and cover. The other copy was sold by a relatively new seller and was in VG++ condition, both record and cover, and it sold for $205.50.

We often like to watch autographed copies of records signed by our favorite artists. Here’s one: Sonny Stitt, Prestige 7024. This was an original New York pressing signed by Stitt. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. The price was $133.61.

Some of the items we watch fail to get any bids. Here’s one: Donald Byrd, Byrd’s Eye View, Transition 4. This was in VG condition, both record and cover, and did not have a booklet. The starting price was $349 and there were no bids. We used to keep track of these in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, but not anymore. Now we track records that actually sell.

Another $1,000 Item, Plus A Few More

We were right in predicting that this record would surpass the $1,000 barrier:  It was in near mint condition and it is a rare Blue Note and it was being sold by Euclid Records. We’ve seen it sell for more than $900 previously in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, so it was no surprise that this copy sold yesterday for $1,563.

Here are some of the other items we’ve been watching that will be entered into the Price Guide:

Wes Montgomery, Full House, Riverside 434. This was an original blue label pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $255. This is always one of the higher priced Montgomery collectibles, ostensibly aided by the presence of Johnny Griiffin on tenor.

Bobby Hutcherson, Happenings, Blue Note 4231. This was an original New York USA pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $221.40.

Paula Castle, Love Lost, Bethlehem 1036. This was an original 10-inch pressing in M-

Today on Ebay, February 11, 2009

Quite a few mid-tier items up early on eBay today, so I am up early to post them. Here are a few:

We’ve been talking a lot about Andy Warhol covers on the site. Here’s a chance to get one, perhaps at a bargain price because the seller didn’t realize that the cover is by Warhol: Count Basie, RCA 1112. This is not in great shape, but it’s only $1.99 and closing fairly soon. A few weeks ago, we recorded one of these in the Jazz Collector Price Guide for $161.

The seller Tuneup Music has quite a large group of pretty nice records for sale this morning, including Blue Mitchell Big Six, Riverside 273. This is an original blue label pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The current price is $75. Also from this seller is a sealed copy of Larry Young, Into Something, Blue Note 84187. This is already at $125. The challenge with a sealed record is not knowing whether it’s an original label, so, personally, I’d be careful on this one. If you look at these records, you should click View Seller’s Other Items because there’s a lot more.
