A delightful post. At the start of last year, one of my resolutions was to see more live jazz and write about it on my blog. Although I was sceptical about the quality of what I would encounter here in London, I needn't have been. I didn't see one bad gig as things turned out and much that I did witness blew my socks off. It was also great to hear that your partner was up for a change of plans. The movies have their place but witnessing a great live performance is in a different league. It sounds as though Smoke will be a regular stopping off point for you.

Thanks for sharing that one with us Al. That is what I love about the live Jazz scene in NYC, every night out is pure magic I swear !

Great call on that particular set as well. Any chance one gets to catch Al Foster live, should not be missed !!! He is a national Jazz treasure, and one hell of a great cat. I caught him the last time he was at the Village Vanguard, and after his set he took time out to chat with my wife and I, sign my copy of (Coincidentally enough... An album just mentioned in your last post) The Thing To Do on Blue Note 4176, and take a photo with us... After a lengthy conversation, he paused for a moment, then asked us to wait while he wandered back to his drum kit and came back with a pair of his sticks, which he graciously offered us ! Needless to say, we were completely enamored by the phenomenal performance we had the privledge of witnessing within a legendary venue and then spending time with the legend himself afterwards ! (This is why I love NYC)
