great article Al!.. it got me right away, must be the “MOTHERFUCKER”… but ,indeed, a perfect word to discribe the feelin’ if you hear bird the first time…. i had it with Bird, Monk and Mingus, the first time.. “what the f@…”

A beautifully written and researched piece.
I had heard of a different source for his nickname: After Jo Jones criticised his playing by throwing a ride-cymbal at his feet, Parker did his practicing at a Kansas City rail yard and
became Yardbird.
