Getting a Boot, Indeed
So the other day I’m walking my dog Marty in the neighborhood. Regular readers will recognize Marty as my lucky charm companion on the two collections I’ve bought in the past two years, the Irving Kalus collection and the Bruce M. West collection in Baltimore. We take our normal route up Broadway and turn down 83rd Street towards West End Avenue. The street is lined with tables of people selling all kinds of wares. Lots of junk from their homes, it seems. I stop at the first booth and ask the woman what’s going on. It’s a block association sale, she says. I look down and see a box of records. The first record is a Woody Herman record on Capital. Well, I have to look of course. So there are these Woody Herman and Benny Goodman records and I’m flipping and it seems pretty clear there’s nothing there for me, when all of a sudden I see the record pictured at the right. An original pressing of Marty Paich,I Get a Boot Out of You. I didn’t have my glasses. I couldn’t see the condition. I couldn’t see the price.
I asked the woman. Five dollars, she said. I pulled out my wallet and gave her a five. I got home, checked the record and the cover. The cover has a small seam split and is in VG+ condition. The record is M-. I have it on the turntable now. Art Pepper, Violets for Your Furs. Nice. Looks like Marty is going to get more walks on the weekends.
Nice catch! Quite an expensive record through the usual channels….I envy you 😉 I love this music.
Al, you lucky man.
oh to live in NYC!
I literally just pick up dog S*#t on my walks!
Adamski — well I do plenty of that as well.
Lesson learned, Al: from now on you HAVE to bring your glasses. Oh, and before I forget: you lucky son of a gun. Congrats. And out of pure jealousy I now need a drink.

One more thing though: you say, quote: “…the street is lined with tables…” – was this the only table where they had records? Didn’t you check out the others? Pray tell.
I found this same record in a Stockton, California record store for $3.50. It was a promo copy, and the cover was in good condition (not VG, just G), and the record did not look in good shape. When I got home, I cleaned it up and while there is some noise on the first song on side one, the rest of the record plays beautifully. I had been looking for this record, but wasn’t going to pay $100 for it. So, I feel like Al and I hit the proverbial jackpot on this one.
