Pick A Peck of Pepper, For a Price

How about another Art Pepper record: Art Pepper Quartet, Modern Art, Score 4030. I’m kind of kidding showing this one. Why? Well, it’s the version on Score and not Intro, so it is less than original, right? And it’s in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover, so that’s OK. How about the start price? How about $19,999? If this one sells, we’re all doing something wrong. More realistically, there is this one: Art Pepper, Modern Art, Intro 606. This is an original pressing  and it’s listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the vinyl. There’s more than a day to go and the price is in the $550 range, which is a bit more like it. In the Jazz Collector Price Guide we’ve seen this one sell for more than $1,000 many times, and even once at more than $2,000. But never at $19,999. While we’re on the subject: Art Pepper Quartet, Tampa RS 1001. I’ve seen this with a pink label and this one has a black label, so I’m not sure which is original. This one is only in VG condition for the record and VG- for the cover and is priced at $67.

  • Re high ticket item. I remember going to this dealers store when they were in Ft Lauderdale, FL. Nice enough place, but if I remember correctly you had to ask about prices for a lot of the items. I hate that. I mean if you have a store and are selling whatever, you should know what you want for it and price it!
However in this case, the asking price seems a bit delusional. We’ll soon see the validity of the statement regarding a sucker being born every minute.

  • If someone buys it I will eat my shorts and put it on You Tube. I understand that the auction market can cause people to overpay for items but usually by like %20-50. Believe me I’ve paid regrettable prices. I’m wondering if the seller made an error entering the price.

  • it must be an error.

  • If it were $18,999 I’d go for it. But at $19,999 it’s just too rich for my blood.

  • Damn – it was a typo! Now we won’t be able to view Mike eating his shorts! MIKE: For a few years now I go VG to VG+ as I can control the budget factor and don’t have that regret thing goin’ on. Sometimes you get lucky and a VG+ record will actually be VG+. As long as the record plays real nice I don’t mind what it looks like. When you spend $100s on a record however, you want it to look nice!
JASON: Yeah! You guys see that seller who’s got a sealed stereo INTRODUCING THE BEATLES for $125,000 or best offer? How’s that goin’? LOL!

  • this Pepper album is now listed for $ 199.99. Seller has corrected his manifest error.

  • a Mike’s friend?
or a Jazz Collector reader ?

  • Ok – this has nothing to do w/ peppers. Red. Hot. Red hot. Jalepenos. Art. Or Adams. And it’s probably a subject we ALL KNOW TOO WELL.
LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM – the bob man dj u kick that is. The hype man. The obfuscator. The con artist. The deceiver. These are words with a “D” this time. Double talk. Double talk.
I personally think he’s a ________ (fill in your own word in the space provided.) I will place scumbag in the space provided. But ask me how I really feel about him.
This is just great – the first thing I see from the guy and his “new” round of records. The VERY FIRST (and last) auction I roll onto this round! –

Ok so what I do first is look at the cover and grade it the best I can through “picture only” methods before I actually see what he grades it (i already know what he’s gonna grade it!) Hmm. Has that beat up corner that looks as though it has moisture damage – the light kind that simply textures the slick where there’s the ever-so-famous UA cutout corner! Oh, all those scratches and chipping to the front and the yellowing. Well, right away in my book it has to be VG. Those aren’t light imperfections by any means. Viewing by picture method does not reveal splits so just say there are small starter splits to mouths at the very least of that flaw category – good amounts of wear, yep I’m gonna say conservatively a decent VG cover. Vinyl is hard to pictur-ize so doesn’t apply.
Next, I’m gonna say that HE’s gonna put VG++ on it. YEP. I was right!
BTW, YES! I do find this enlightning!
VG++ my ass BDJUKIK! There’s another for ya DA! But ask me how I really feel about him. Is he blind? Can he not see? Did he eat them simply thing the octicia was a carrot? Oh. Tull. I regress!
Oh, he’ll probably get $125 to $200 for this 3rd or 4th re-issued overgraded lp.
I’ve studied this type of method (or should I say deceipt?) of selling records mainly through this guy’s auctions. It took years to figure out the madness/obfuscation that is deeply rooted within this seller’s practice. YEARS? Yes YEARS! I’ve sold vinyl on ebay for 12+ years! Researching past auctions will definitely bring the dirt up. Just to start, look at his new records for sale and you will see that he’s selling records he had YEARS AGO that sold for HIGH dollar( er .. I mean SHILL-IGH dollar) and they just reappear! Imagine that!
I don’t adhere to known scumness. I don’t like him. As a seller of fine vinyl I try to be as conservative and up front about everthing. If I don’t know something I will simply not place the prompt in the description instead of LYING! Yes he LIES! And/or obscures the placed info where the buyer is so mixed up he’ll bid high just to see what the lingo means!LOL! AN OBFUSCATOR! How does he sleep? I know people will comment smirckishly and write things like – “He probably sleeps great with that kinda bank account.” “He’s laughing at you in Hawaii right now!” or “sounds like we have a jealous seller here” or “etc etc” … Well, I just think you have one life to really live and you are either honest or not and I can’t be the dishonest person. I just can’t.
That is all I have to say about it. So, just so you don’t have to ask how I feel about him in the future, You can kiss my ass bdjukik&suck! Ask me how I really feel about him.

  • @zarabeth. Here is another one from him http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=140547292992&index=0&nav=SEARCH&nid=23498940815 . Cannonball Adderley Somethin’ Else. He states ‘original, first pressing’. Not I am not completely sure, but he says 63rd address on one side, new York on other side. I thought the original had 63rd on both, mine does. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong. And his grading says excellent or very good +++. What the hell is that kind of grading? VG +++ I haven’t bought from him and won’t. I don’t care if he has a 100% feedback.

  • Zarabeth47,it sounds like you’re angry that bdjukik is making a huge profit while you and other, more trustworthy dealers have your honesty basically unappreciated. Is that how you feel? Hmm,I’m sorry, but our time is up for this week. Let’s schedule something for after Labor Day,ok? You did some nice work today,though-good job!(Z:”AAAAARRGGHHH!!!”)

  • Found a better deal. I ended up getting the Art Pepper Quartet, Modern Art lp from bdjukik for only $17,999!

  • The auction of this Pepper album ended without bids. The album is now for sale at a fixed price of $ 199.99 (buy it now).

  • I bought a sealed 1st pressing promo of Ten Years After “Undead” from Djukik a few years ago.
Not only was it pristine and wrapped up like a virgin awaiting deflowering by Mao Tse Tung…. but the correspondence of emails he sent me afterward were smart, personal, and revealing. A very good writer.
Only one man’s experience, but long live the Djuk!

  • I also do not like Bob D. manner of advertising, but I also bought suff from him in the past years. I can only underline Dan Axelrod’s mail: The correspondence was very nice, the package was perfect and the quality of the records was better than described. So – all in all – I was satisfied.

  • CAZOON: Yeah he’s one to say what it takes! We all probably know this: the orig is double 63rds on the labels. MIne has double DG and no r as well. I don’t want to waste time but if you have the time see if he sold it years ago and it was just shilled (use popsike and check pictures obviously start w/ highest first etc etc… you’ll find ’em! Maybe not that one but others for sure!)
CEEDEE: Well, we don’t know profit margins and such on anyone’s books but I do very well selling lps as a hobby. I ‘ve collected my whole life so I have cool records and I do buy the occasional “can’t pass this one up!” collection. I just set fixed prices however as auctions just breed shilling. I have a constant flow of sales year round when I’m not in Hawaii – actually Laguna!) Selling records is not my main gig. I’m a fairly successful musician!
DAN AXELROD: My friend bought a killer 10″ from him and he was ok with it so I know he sells the goods. My big peeve is the way he hypes out some shitty $4 record like YES- CLOSE TO THE EDGE and gets $90 (or does he get it?) from a high bidder! And also some of the grades he places on stuff to lure you in. That LEE MORGAN cover is NOT ++! It’s deception I will not go forth unto! Call me crazy! I just know too much about it from years and years of it. I just know too much about it and that’s all I have to say about that.

  • JASON: On the ground laughing buddy! That’s my kind of humor!
DAN AXELROD: http://www.popsike.com/TEN-YEARS-AFTERUNDEADSEALED-ORIG-1968-DERAM-PROMO-LP/350073583276.html Nothing personal but I think you paid $105 dollars too much for that one! Hook line and sinker baby! The BDJUKCK at his finest! No hard feelings man but that’s like a 3 dollar record in stores around here. It might not be NM or PRISTINE but… Most times I find VG-/VG copies in the $1 bins. I’m sure you could find a nice one for under $10 on ebay on most given days. What was the reason for bidding over $100 on a $3 record? Well (sung to the tune of the old OPERATION kids games commercials) OBFUSCATION! He states loudly “promo” “sealed”(promos were usually never sealed – that would make profit margins for the companies smaller!)and then he counters with “this may have a stock label etc etc… as the sticker on the back clearly states blah blah…) That’s called covering your ass. Gimme a break it’s a $20 record sealed TOPS! And once you open it it’s a $3 record!
Dude That’s what I mean about the cat! I CAN’T EVEN SELL THAT RECORD so I don’t buy ’em or waste my time! Trust me I’ve tried! That’s a really really hard record to sell for even $7 or $8 bucks man! It’s pretty simple for me.
This is a perfect example of the man’s work … err.. I mean shame.

  • Zarabeth, maybe you should start selling those on ebay. They seem to go for $100+ in that condition and if you get them for $10-$20 that’s a nice profit. If I see one in a record store for $10 in M- condition I’m going to buy it for reselling.

I’ve bought from Bod D twice. Once I returned the item no questions asked. The other time I was satisfied. His Hyperbole is very ridiculous but I have no reason to question his integrity beyond hyperbole. I don’t really like seeing someone’s livelihood ridiculed in public without a very good reason. Bob D reminds me of those crazy furniture store or car dealer commercials that hype there products heavily. Doesn’t mean they are bad at there jobs, just trying to hype there products. Tacky maybe, but it’s that fine line between actual being deceitful. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy the records.

  • Nice detective work, Zarabeth. That is indeed the record, and though I don’t need them all to be sealed with a promo sticker, this one i did… and “The Dju” delivered to “This Jew” in spades.

If YOU can find one sealed, mint with the promo sticker, I’ll pay YOU $105…and kiss your ass in Macy’s window. But I don’t believe I’ll have to start puckering any time soon.

  • DA: Even if I did find one and I knew you wanted it, I would contact you first and say just make me a fair offer ’cause that’s how I am! But NO BUTT KISSING! I’m not into that man. LOL!!!!!!!
If that’s one of your favorite records, then ya gotta do it huh?!? I just bought a VG+ press of one of my favorites- LAUREL AITKEN SAYS FIRE on DOCTOR BIRD. Yeah, I probably paid too much for it! Oh well! Whaddaya do?
I do think you can find nice presses cheap(er) however and it’s sometimes worth the wait. Sometimes not, especially if the seller can’t grade and wastes your time and money. There was an UNDEAD supposedly NM IN SHRINK that sold for $18 recently.

MIKE: I’ve tried selling TYA stuff and it just doesn’t sell. I just don’t bother anymore. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TEN-YEARS-AFTER-WATT-ORIG-1971-DERAM-LP-w-POSTER-MINT-/160640461914?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DMRU-11233%252BUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D110729832120%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D2510472683495789673
Here’s a NEAR MINT cover of this press with a bruised corner, wear to all other corners, a larger crease to the back and a ding to the spine. That’s what I think of when I think NEAR MINT! How come people don’t trust their eyes here? With all those flaws it can not be higher than a VG+. Just can’t. Said so! I can’t believe anyone would spend the amount it’s even up to now ($26) knowing what their eyes see and what he describes. Oh yeah, there’s a POSTER included! Well, I don’t see one and he doesn’t grade one or show a picture of it.
I tried to sell this record many times. Once w/ a nicer cover and a really nice ++ record and it just sat and sat and sat. Even when I lowered it to $5 months later it didn’t sell! I just won’t buy their(TYA) stuff anymore. Just knowing what the auction market is all about these days -with everyone’s friend and families having an ebay account (even sellers can have multiple accounts!) the auction market is just not a fair barometer of value. Ebay just looks the other way when confronted! They won’t do anything to stop the blatant shill bidding and it’s bad. Look at past history on these lps – if you sold a nice one for $18 bucks and you had $10 into it – ebay/paypal will suck $6+ leaving you with a few bucks. First thing though, YOU GOTTA SELL IT! GOOD LUCK! It’s not worth your time! – I wouldn’t waste .50cents and actually try to sell one at fixed price that’s for sure, especially w/ the experience I’ve had with their records. I think I sold a decent SSSHHHH… once. Once! I think I got like $7 bucks for it!
You are right Mike. I shouldn’t judge other people’s work ethics or their character just because I see flaws with almost everything they sell. I’m very sorry Bob.

CEEDEE: I think I need another session soon? How’s Tuesday when you get back from Martha’s Vinyard! LOL! Peace brother.

  • Zara:
I recently bought a sealed Undead for $10 (item 200620700653)and though it had two stickers on it, I didn’t mind.
It’s a record that had significance in my youth, and a sealed copy in hand makes me feel like a old whore getting to once again touch her own shrink-wrapped hymen.
Try putting a price on that…
    DA

  • WHY?
So why would anyone pay $109 for a fourth press LEE MORGAN INDEED(the record I tore apart in an earlier post?) I see ’em all the time. There was one that ended a few days ago(liberty/ua mono press) and it only went $10 …. WHY? I only paid like $15 for mine about a year ago … so why? How much can that record possibly be worth? It was overgraded and smelleth of the shill-ih.
How come when I research bidding history with this seller’s items, the bidders always have really high bid percentages with the seller? ……….. I just think it’s a big shill thing, given my total experience with selling records and researching them on a constant day to day basis for many many years. HMMMM $109 vs $10? And that grading level …….. Excuse me …. I have to vomit.

  • OK here’s a record I know (everybody knows?) is so much rarer and worth so much more than that LEE MORGAN ri : http://www.ebay.com/itm/190570901518?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
Given economic recession etc etc that record ended today VERY VERY MUCH SO ON THE LOW SIDE. Even today that lp is worth $100s of dollars more than it ended at. I SHOULD HAVE BID/BOUGHT IT – IT WAS SO CHEAP! (I forgot actually as I play a gig on Sunday mornings!) Damn, a nice ND pressing of SKA AUTHENTIC VOL 2 – for $138.00 – c’mon people!

  • What, actually, is the difference between the Intro and Score label pressings? As I understand it, Intro was released before Score, but by how far? In my usual world of Soul 45s, this could be as easy as “local issue” vs. “nationally distributed issue” but I’m not sure what the deal is in this particular case. Anyone care to drop some knowledge on this one?
