A Slight Site Change

Before I get into my theory or theories on some of the lower prices on eBay for mid-tier collectibles, which I will do later this morning, let me inform you of a recent slight change we’ve made to the Jazz Collector site. After we started the Reader Forum a couple of months ago, we set up the site so that comments would appear in a different order, with the most recent on top. We did this to make it easier to use the Reader Forum without having to scroll through to the bottom. However, we spent some time on the site last night, just perusing old articles and it all seemed a bit out of synch and counter-intuitive. When you look at the articles, as well as the Reader Forum, there’s a certain flow wherein the order of the postings is part of telling the entire story. Anyway, we decided to go back to showing the comments in the order they were posted, top to bottom, the way it is handled on most Web sites. It may be a little bit more hassle reading the Reader Forum, but for me, as a reader, it enhances the overall storytelling.

That’s a good decision, Al. I always found it unnatural reading the comments from buttom to top. By the way: Congratulations for your excellent site! I only discovered it some months ago and have enjoyed visiting it almost daily since. I live in Zurich, Switzerland, and have been collecting jazz records for 25 years (I’m 38).

  • Al, does your program/site support the creation of a “Topic”, which appears on a main level, and which readers can then comment under specifically? You’ve all seen this; as comments are added, the topic becomes collapsable/expandable with plus (+) and minus (-). (A.K.A. a “Tree”.) That’s a nice way to maintain order and organization and for the reader to easily scan all the main topics, then expand and comment only on a specific one. Just curious.

By the way, this is the perfect time to say thanks, Al, for all your work in building and maintaining this great forum in which we can all gather and “talk shop”.

  • Thanks, Japhy. I will look into the Topic solution. And thanks for the kind words. It really is my pleasure to do this, quite literally, because I really get a lot of pleasure doing the site and it’s a great way to be part of the community and do something creative at the same time.

  • We all love the Reader Forum Al, but as you know it’s currently at +133 entries and counting… Needless to say, if one is checking the latest postings from their fellow Jazz Collectors on an iPhone (etc) because ones wife is monopolizing ones laptop, having the oldest post first makes it very difficult to check and post a comment. Is there any means of perhaps adding some type of date button at the top similar to the price guide so we can select newest to oldest entry or vise-versa?
