Tracking Rare Jazz Vinyl on Prestige
Not everything is Blue Note, right? Here are some Prestiges that we’ve just entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide.
Dorothy Ashby, Hip Harp, Prestige 7140. This was an original New York yellow label pressing and it looked to be in nice M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The price was $193.
Miles Davis Plus Horns, Prestige 7025. This was a New York pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The listing lacked a little bit of detail — such as whether it was a kakubushi cover — and the price was $170.17. Just a few weeks ago we saw an M- version of this LP sell for $799.
Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7099. This was an original New York yellow label pressing
and it was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. The price was $486.
Art Taylor, Taylor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This was an original New York yellow label pressing and it features John Coltrane. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG+. The price was $432.
Jimmy Forrest, Forrest Fire, New Jazz 8250. This was an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves and it was listed as M- for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $162.
Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Prestige 7294. This was an original yellow label pressing with the New Jersey address. It was listed in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $431. Also: Eric Dolphy, Outward Bound, New Jazz 8236. This was an original purple label, deep groove pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG+ as well. The price was $252.
i have seen covers from Dorothy Ashby but never heard an album.Does she play bob music or more third stream kinda music??
Straight-ahead bop on the harp.
yeah, but still, IMHO, the instrument is not really suitable for playing jazz. I had 3 of hers (Regent, PR and NJ) and decided to keep only the PR and NJ, because they have the better sleeves. Savoy/Regent come rarily with appealing covers. The best were the early (black/white) photo covers on 10 and 12″ by Burt Goldblatt, if I am correct.
