A Pair of Jazz Vinyl For This Jazz Collector

Here is one of the conundrums of doing the Jazz Collector Web site. I still collect records and occasionally buy them on eBay. So, when I spot a record that interests me, do I dare share it with the world? I usually do. Case in point: Phil Woods, Woodlore, Prestige 7018. This is an original New York yellow label pressing. The record looks to be in M- condition and the cover looks around VG+. This is a nice early Prestige I’ve only owned as a Japanese pressing. The auction closes tomorrow and there are no bidders at a $200 start price. I would pay $200 for this record. I could just lurk in the background, put in a snipe and hope no body else is interested, which I may, indeed, do. But I’d certainly have a better chance for success without blabbing about my interest to the whole Jazz Collector world out there, wouldn’t you say? Actually, I’m surprised there are no bidders yet for this one and there’s only one bidder for this record from the same seller: Lucky Thompson, Lucky Strikes!, Transition 21. This is an original pressing with the booklet. The record is in M- condition and the cover is probably VG++.There’s only one bid at $200 for this. To be fair, the highest price we’ve seen for this in the Jazz Collector Price Guide has been a little more than $300, so perhaps the $200 is not so unreasonable. It just looks like a record that should sell for more, at least it does to this collector.

  • “Woodlore” is a great album; alas, I only have the OJC. Honestly, looking at the seller’s other auctions of punk and metal, it’d be hard to imagine an accurate grade on a classic jazz album. People who sell a lot of rock and especially punk have somewhat more flexible grading standards than, say, Fred Cohen or the sweedeedee guy (forget his name at the moment). As one who collects both punk and jazz records, I strive for M- all around, and that’s an elusive prospect. Good luck if you bid and hopefully they arrive in nice shape.

  • I don’t really agree Clifford. I sell rock, soul, funk, and sometimes jazz. My grading always stays the same. With the collectible LPs I make sure to pay closer attention however. I want to make sure the buyer is 100% satisfied.

  • That’s good – my experiences have been less positive.

  • I have won the auction of the Phil Woods Woodlore. I have paid the record and now the seller tells me that is not theirs and that it may not send it. Another fraud on eBay? I have claim PayPal

  • Joaquim, what did they mean it’s “not theirs”? Even a record on consignment has to be in one’s hands before listing it. Al least, that’s the only thing that makes any sense to me.(What seller would list something unseen by themselves?)Please keep us informed…

  • Joaquim, I think seller has got a better outright offer and thus will not sell to you. The sale will be undone and through Paypal you will be re-imbursed. No worry there. The question is whether the system allows you leave negative feedback in that case.

  • Rudolf,if that’s the case, there’s a simple to describe the seller-“unscrupulous”. The word choices of others may vary…

  • Thanks Al for you understanding, thanks also cedee and udolph. i have claim Paypal I hope the refund of my money

  • Whoa – that’s a drag. Sorry to hear it’s working out so dubiously. eBay and Paypal are, in situations like this, very easy to work with – especially if you’ve retained all the communications.
