To prevent any confusion: my first name actually is Matty, but my nick name here on Jazzcollector is always Mattyman. Maybe it would be a good suggestion to the 'new' matty here to at least add a little extra to his nick name? Just sayin', you know, if things look/sound too similar, people might confuse things, you see. Best, Mattyman ;-)

I remember taking a few deep groove Three Sounds LPs to trade at Jazz Record Mart some years ago. I got $40 in trade, for those and a couple others.

Rudolf, I guess you can always get a better price…your 400 USD yesterday is probably the 2000 USD of today and who knows what the price will be in 10-15 years time. Woulden’t spend too much time fussing over this. The main thing is you got fair market value at the time and that that value is still proportional to what it is worth today. Any thoughts?

I had this brown Esquire to start with, a bit tatty, so at the right moment I traded it in for the lovely blue/white covered PRLP 7068. The funny thing is that my supplier at the time hand-wrote on the rear “Esq 32-111”. What do we learn out of that? Well, very simply, the lesson is that Esquire Ltd issued records that were later re-issued by people overseas.
I cherish my collection of Esquires. 32-111 has an ungly brown cover, but most designs (especially by Harvey Peck) are very original.

Lovely record “Jackies Pal”. I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of its simultaneous UK release (1956?) on Esquire last year, similarly a sort of archive copy, but from the BBC record archive. RVG stampers and all, but an alternative cover borrowing heavily from the Prestige artwork.

But I ask you – brown? May cause a wry smile to see what The Colonials had done to it. Still the price discount against the Prestige is pretty eye-watering.

HEIR: of course, this all BS, PR talk of some empty sales guys. Does one say, Beethoven is the heir of Bach, or Shostakovich the heir of Rachmaninov?
As a matter of fact, Lee, Cliff, Thad, Art Farmer, Bill Hardman, Kenny Dorham, Don Byrd are each a class unto themselves. It is up to anybody’s personal appreciation to rate and pigeonhole them, if this is required at all. I love them all, some more than others, depending on my mood.

Al: I know how you feel. I sold a first pressing of “Lee Morgan Indeed” for $ 500 and was very happy a couple of years ago. I kept a slightly better quality second pressing original though. Ditto for 1544.
I sold today a first pressing of BLP 4014. No big money, but wonder whether it is really worth what I will be paid for it. I don’t think I will regret. Anyway, slimming down has got a price tag to it, and weren’t you slimming down too?
Jackie’s Pal is a gem, I have always liked Bill Hardman. Prefer him to Donald Byrd, unduly promoted as Clifford’s heir. In retrospect Lee WAS the heir, Thad Jones, Art Farmer each being a class in itself.
