Some Non-Blue Notes For the Price Guide
Here are a few non-Blue Notes for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:
The Arrival of Kenny Dorham, Jaro 4644. This seemed to be a mono pressing and it was listed in M- condition for both the cover and the record. The price was $943.33.
Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This was an original pressing. The seller listed the condition of both the record and the cover as between VG and VG+. It sold for $840, which means the buying public probably figured the VG grading was more accurate than the VG+. I was listening to some jazz vinyl with the lovely Mrs. JC last night and I asked her if she recalled me ever playing Jackie McLean for her. She didn’t, so I put on
side 2 of A Long Drink Of the Blues, New Jazz 8253, where he plays three ballads, Embraceable You, I Cover the Waterfront and These Foolish Things. If you have this and haven’t listened to it in a while, check it out. Great, inventive, soulful playing. My only regret in pulling out the album was the realization that my copy is a blue label pressing with a Status cover. This one goes on the list of records that needs an upgrade. If anyone out there has a spare . . .
This will be a new high for this Prestige: Miles Davis Plus Horns, Prestige 7025. This was an original pressing in M- condition and it was sold by Euclid Records. The price was $799.
I’ll be the first to admit that those “questionable descriptions can certainly be a crap-shoot, but once in awhile the risks pay off… Remember that copy of Jackie McLean’s – The New Tradition (Ad Lib 6601) I had asked your opinion on a few months ago Al ? Well I took a chance on it, and upon arrival I found the LP itself to be in marvelous condition despite a medium grade cover with a bottom seam split and a bit of shelf wear. A real “bargain” at $750 for one of the rarest Lp’s. To date, this is the second most expensive LP I ever purchased… but well worth it. Jackie really cooks on this one !
p.s. – So what did the lovely Mrs. JC think of Jackie by the way ???)
0n the Miles davis and horns: I love the cover by Don Martin. As a kid i used to read imported MAD-magazines.. since i am collecting jazz records i know he also did some Prestige album covers, including this one.
There ia also “the brothers” (P7022) and i know of one from Bud Powel and from Kai Windig.. are there more Prestige covers that Don Martin disigned?
Really love his style with a cynical and melancholic twist to it.
I saw “the brothers” for sale on ebay($ 100)..
Oh, I forgot. Mrs. JC loved Jackie. There’s a real longing in his playing on that album and he takes the time and doesn’t rush and just plays beautifully. She definitely got it that he was a special musician.
Hey Don-Lucky – Flip that Jackie! Ha.
Maarten: I agree with you, Don Martin is gorgeous. I dig him.
Apart from the ones you mention (7022-the Brothers; 7023-Trombone by 3; 7024-Stiit/Powell/J.J. and 7025-M.D. and Horns, there is
PrLp 7031 – Art Farmer Septet, which a nice D. Martin cover.
That is all, I am afraid.
…with….
…That’s a tough call Japhy. It’s always hard for us collectors to part with those rare ones. Besides, the music on this LP alone makes it well worth holding on to for awhile. I hate to admit it, but I even had downloaded a copy off itunes recently for the drive to work…
p.s. – I have to agree with you guys, got to love that ‘Miles Davis and Horns’ cover by Don Martin… (It’s on my ‘must have’ list if anybody has an extra copy they would like to part with… heh heh)
thanks Rudolf,I looked it up and it is a beauty to, the art Farmer… (art farmer, don;t know a album that i dislike..)
It’s a nice series, the 4 Don Martins
by the way, i already knew sites with all the Blue Note covers, but here is a nice one i found for those who are not familiar with ALL the Prestige covers(7000-7200) (like me)..

Maarten: interesting site. Do you know the cover artist Jim Flora? He is great too. If you google, you will find him.
verry nice Rudolf, didn’t knew him… he has a funny devlisch kind of way… I’m gonna look out for a nice original cover by him…
Another great reason to collect Jazz… Fine art within our reach, and it even comes complete with it’s own soundtract !!! (Can’t get that at Sotheby’s) While we are on the subject, lets not forget other notable artists like Andy Warhol, Joan Miro, Phil Hays, Edmond Edwards, David Stone Martin etc. etc. etc.
Beyond our treasured Blue Note cover photos by Francis Wolff, I always enjoyed David Stone Martin’s stuff… Here’s a decent cross-section of his work if anyone is interested:

Josef Albers (Bauhaus etc.) did a bunch of great covers for Command c.1960/61. The music’s pretty lame though – novelty big band and bongos kinda stuff.
