  • A friend just sent me the most amazing series of photos I’ve seen on Hurricane Sandy and the devastation left in it’s wake. I’ve never known the east coast to undergo anything approaching this, ever. It puts the mere cancellation of a record fair in it’s proper perspective(in case you needed that).

  • I’m looking for Paris record store recommendations again. I’ll be there next week.

I’m looking for mostly Euro records and actually stuff from the 70-80s just as much as 50-60s. I’m looking for records that are mostly mid tier collectibles that aren’t available over here as often. I mean, I’d love to stumble across cheap top tiers collectibles but don’t think I’ll be that look.

I’m interested in artist like Mal Waldron and his European output as well as the same from people like Paul Bley, Zoot Sims, Blossom Dearie, and others. Really I just want a cool place(s) with lots of jazz records even if most are overpriced.

    Thanks!
    Mike

  • Hi fellow ethusiasts, I have a mystery blue note that I would like to find out what vintage it could be. The title is BN 1536 J.R Monterose. The labels are Lexington on both sides with ‘ear’ and no R under the E. The cover has Lexington address without inc. However, there are no deep grooves and the cover is not the ‘framed’ type. What’s interesting is that it is a flat edge pressing on heavy vinyl. Can anyone shade some light on this anomaly? I understand that there were no more flat edge pressings after the first deep groove originals and the non deep groove blue notes started somewhere at 4059, or am I wrong? Any input will be much appreciated.

  • That is very curious. The first Blue Notes with no deep groove appeared around 1961 yet the last Blue Notes with a flat edge were pressed in 1956. Can you post some pictures?

  • Mike F: go to Paris Jazz Corner, close to the Roman arena in the 5th arrondissement. I try to find you the exact adress and the tube stations and will let you know.

  • Much thanks Rudolf

  • Hi Aoron, am new to this forum. Can someone guide me as to how to post pictures here or should I PM the pictures? Thanks for responding.

  • Just post a link to the images on a free hosting site so all the qualified folks here can weigh in.

  • Mike F: Paris Jazz Corner,
    5, rue de Navarre, 75005.
Telph 01 4336 7892. Tube station: Place Monge.
If you Google (google.fr), you will find them with a map.
    Happy hunting.

  • Ng Chee Kia,
Your Blue Note may be a Japanese repressing, thus the no deep groove.

    Terry

  • Thanks Rudolf,
I will report to the group on my findings.

  • I’ve got no room for the drum I have that belonged to Elvin Jones during the Coltrane years, so it’s time to put it out for a no-reserve auction on the ‘bay. Too much of a shame to not display it proudly!

You can check it out at this link.

  • Don’t know if this has been commented on before, but….bodjukic has as many of you have nodoubt seen the most elaborate descriptions of items … often, I would say, making what may be a sow’s ear into a silk purse. One recent item (Chet’s first album, PJLP3)
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHET-BAKER-QUARTET-1st-ALBUM-ULTRA-RARE-ORIG-53-PACIFIC-JAZZ-10-LP-DG-NR-MINT-/350624284956?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item51a2d6011c&nma=true&si=nB0orEORkE17FiVUMuffE9XjIr0%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
sold for over $500; the best recent price I saw was about 130.. he called it (VISUALLY) NM.. as some of you 10″ collecotrs know, these albums may look OK, but the grooves have been (non-visually) beat up by some stone-age styli, so a visual check doesn’t cut it.. wonder if any of you have seen similar from this guy and what your thoughts are

  • Did you guys see BOBDJUKIC’s comment on the London Jazz Collector site regarding “original” pressings? Definitely worth the read for an insight into his listing practices:
    http://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2012/11/19/its-an-original-ebay-auction-bn-1576-original-us-lp/

  • Hello, I am trying to determine whether or not my Lee Morgan Indeed! is an original pressing. I know it would be extremely rare if impossible to find a sealed copy, but that is what I have. It is obviously not a recent reissue. I have found information that states there was a 1963 repress of the album that says “New York, USA” on the label. I found also that there were possibly two versions released in 57, one that states “W 63rd St. on the label and another that states the “Lexington Ave.” address but the info stops there. On the back of my record it states the, 767 Lexington Ave. address and nothing else. My dilemma is that since it is sealed I can’t check the label or the dead wax to check for sure. I have a feeling that an original mint copy still sealed would be something of value to the right person or museum for that matter. There are two reasons I question it, 1. it has a very small corner cut in the top right corner which I’m not sure was a practice in the late 50’s. At the same time, even if it wasn’t, It could have been “lost” at a record store in the wrong section, stored in a warehouse or any number of situations which would constitute a quick sale after it was “found”. Also, there is a small sticker in the top right corner that only says “a musical experience” which looks like a sticker that would be on a 60’s – 70’s release, the sticker does look old though so I can’t be sure. When comparing pictures though, the only difference I could notice between some of them was the color of Lee and his trumpet on the cover. Mine seems to be closer in color to the original pressings that I have seen, like the pic that is on Jazz Collector. others seem to be too light of a green, too yellow-green or too blue-green.

I have always know since I found this record that it was possibly a 1st pressing but never looked further, I was just happy to have a copy, and sealed to boot!

I had it listed on Ebay with the rest of my jazz but decided for obvious reasons that I should research it more before letting ignorance rule my listing fingers. So for now the listing has ended. Once I find out what pressing it is I will be re-listing it regardless of what I find. It will not have a reserve nor ridiculous starting price.

If anyone could please help me out with some info I would be forever grateful. Thank you so much.

  • Seth- I think what you have is a facsimile reissue with a blue and white UA label. Almost all of them have that cut corner. That stamp is from that era as well. I believe they were initially meant for export to Japan and therefore have a greater amount of original details like the Lexington address on the back.

  • Bill, Thank you so much. It turned out to be exactly what you thought.

  • I recently bought a copy of Dexter Gordon blows hot and cool.
( one of my favourite records )
Not the original first pressing, but what I think is an early reissue on the dooto label. ( blue and yellow deep groove labels) Does anybody have some information about this special release ?
Labels say stereophonic recording, but somehow it does not sound right using a stereo pickup. Also there is a lot of crackling even though the vinyl looks near mint. Using a mono pickup reduces the background noise dramatically and somehow it sounds like I think it should sound. At least I do not miss anything compared to the stereo playback. Should I have my ears checked or is there any explanation ?

  • I have two Ella Fitzgerald songbooks in vinyl: Cole Porter, Rogers&Hart. Big deal – but they’re signed. I went to the stage door at a concert in Leicestershire, England, while she was on tour with Basie in the 1970s. Anyone interested?
    John D

  • Jan, I had the same stereo record, on red wax I believe. The sound was awful and I sold it for a good price. Apparently that one is a second pressing, the yellow label with the red letters (mono) being the first one.

  • Earl:

I bet that same buyer would give you $138 for your 6-Eye copy.

  • I have a 10″ Billie Holiday at the Jazz Philharmonic LP with DSM cover and trying to figure out why her name is spelled incorrectly on the cover? It is written as ‘Billy Holiday’ (the backside it says it correctly Billie Holiday). Do you have any knowledge about why this is? Wondering what the story is or if this makes it more valuable? Grateful for any answers. Thank you.

  • Amanda

To the best of my knowledge, all 10″ copies of this album have this mis-spelling – whatever the vlaue of the rrecord is (and in VG++ or better condition, it is probably worth $150 or more), it is not altered because of this mis-spelling; that would seem to verify it’s original status (although I am not aware of any copies or re-ssues)

  • I have a issue of Soultrane with yellow bergen label. the cover is not laminated. does this mean this is not an original cover? thanks

  • jack: I would be inclined to say that it is not a first issue. Are the labels deep groove?

  • jack: if they are DG, you may have a first pressing in a second print cover. I bought mine when it was issued and it came with a laminated cover and DG. I have seen later issues with a blue-ish and white cover, instead of the original turqoise/green. These blue-ish ones may have been non-laminated. What shade of blue or green is your cover?

  • Can someone tell me the what are the 1st pressing specifics of The Charlie Parker Quartet – The Genius Of Charlie Parker #3, Now’s The Time (Verve MGV-8005).
What color label and any other factors that denote the 1st press. Thank you and Happy New Year

  • John, here’s a link showing a first pressing of Charlie Parker “Now’s The Time”: http://www.popsike.com/Charlie-Parker-Nows-The-Time-Verve-MG-V8005-DG-Orig-Yellow-Tpt-Lbl-Mono-VG/290621687212.html
    Verve w/deep groove yellow label.

  • Thanks Aaron.
    Happy New Year

  • A local record shop has a copy of Toshiko Akiyoshi on Storyville. They want $325 for the copy, which according to popsike is a little on the high end, but I don’t see this record often, so I was thinking about buying it.

    On the fence though.

Anyone know much about this record? Is it any good?

  • hi i have loaads of autographs .pl rocknihal@yhoo.coma

  • Hi, I recently came across a Thelonious Monk “pure Monk”. It is a promotional copy but one of the records is missing-the other is in great condition. I would like to sell it.. any ideas of the value if any?

    Thanks, Anya

  • I recently came across a copy of beppo records #504 John Coltrane group with Eric Dolphy. It’s in a white sleeve with what appears to be a a large white sticker with black type that lists the tracks and players, and says printed in Brazil. The label on the record itself is yellow with black type and says limited edition in parentheses. I searched the internet but could only find a version of the record in a red sleeve with black type which i think was pressed in the U.K. I am just looking for some information on this record. If you could help it would be much appreciated.

  • I have a number of Jazz albums (around 100) collected by me in the Mid-60’s. Most of these were bought in Germany at the US Army Post Exchange, many are German-manufactured licensed. I’m in the process of data-logging them on Discogs for lack of a better means to catalog them. My goal is to divest myself of these albums, not collect or trade. Is eBay the best means to sell? Also, can anyone recommend a cleaning brush or liquid that will not damage or contaminate the original vinyl?

  • @maartenkools: Nice site indeed, but it’s just shameless copy/pasted from this site: http://www.birkajazz.com/archive/columbia.htm

  • Can someone answer a question for me? i am primarily a garage rock collector but on a recent excursion I found a 45 which appears to be a test pressing of some sort. The label reads King Pleasure Moody’s Mood,(which I recognize), but the other side is Great Day In The Morning. that one throws me off. It appears to be a styrene pressing with 791/792 i the respective deadwax. Is it a test pressing of a boot or does it go back further? Thanks to anyone who can help.

  • I do love your site, Al. So far behind the jazz curve is this poor soul that simply reading your descriptions of vinyl up for auction is highly educational. You are working on a book, correct? 😉 So a brief comment on music for music’s sake. While I’ve been picking up records since the 70’s when I made zero money as a DJ, it’s only recently I’ve really been expanding my horizons. I do appreciate what the predominant names in the jazz community have created, but having spent just a little time in some meager recording studios, what really strikes me is the artistry that goes into the recordings. The equipment I’ve got isn’t what I used to work with, and what I used to work with is nothing compared to what’s available today. Still, much as I’d like to upgrade the equipment, putting on a fine recording is, well, fine.

Now I will likely never be purchasing $1,000 titles, but I do appreciate what I’ve been able to pick up. My $1 today has been quite a fun listen for this novice. It may not be a first pressing, not even a compilation that’s nice enough to include the full tracks, but listening to Prestige Soul Masterpieces (Prestige/Fantasy OJC-1201) is quite a treat for me and a great way to get acquainted with several artists that are quite new to me.

So again, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • bobdjukic has just posted an enormous number of albums:
    http://stores.ebay.com/bobdjukic2/Other-/_i.html?rt=nc&_dmd=2&_fsub=1&_sid=7130341&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14&_vc=1
of which a fair number (~ 15%) are jazz, and some pretty fair offerings – for me, he seems to over-elaborate the assets of his postings, while admitting that he hasn’t the time (no wonder!) to play them – none-the-less, he seems to get more bang for the buck from his postings than similar offerings elsewhere – always interesting to follow

  • Andy-re:Toshiko on Storyville,I see that Fred at JRC recently sold one. I’ve seen it for more,also-as they say, sometimes it just depends on who’s watching that week. Ihaven’t heard it,but “formative years with a heavy dose of Bud Powell”couldn’t be too far off the mark. And a serving of early Paul Chambers is a bonus..

  • ceedee, thanks for that.. I’ll just keep my eye out.

It’s a great cover.. those covers get me every time.

  • This is to everyone

Speaking of Leon Levitt-I bought, sold and traded many records with him about 30 years ago. I had a tremendous jazz collection as well as rock spanning 20 years.

I also loved Jazz and especially Jackie Mclean. I was well to do at that time so I would sometimes fly coast to coast to watch him play. We got close and I was able to go to to backroom many times and talk to him about his music and sometimes his upcoming record.

I would also take his records-I had every single record he did all first edition in pristine condition and have him autograph one or two record of his everytime I saw him live so soon I had all his records signed by him as well as his records as sideman.

One most notable record was blue note 5013 with Jackies’ picture on the bottom right hand corner when he was 17. He laughed and said young jackie, young jackie.

A few years later after a divorce and a serious falling down of sorts, I had to get rid of my record collection to Leon Levitt. He got all the records for dirt cheap $5000 worth millions now. Anyway, my question to anyone out there is does anyone have that particular record with Jackies’ autograph-its right on top of his picture.”\ If anyone does, and let me know how much it was, it will be greatly appreciated to satisfy my curiosity and to further aggravate myself.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hello everyone, I’ve just started getting into Lars Gullin and his early stuff from the 1950’s. All the EP’s he made then are stuff I collect now. Is there anyone who has any Gullin EP’s on for example Metronome in great condition and who wants to sell, contact me through my jazz collecting blog at: http://1139indearoldstockholm.com

    Cheers!

    /Fredrik
