I’m looking to get an appraisal of an album collection I inherited. It’s called Roulette Records, Birdland Series. The various albums feature artists like Count Basie, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Joe Williams, Duke Ellington, etc. Where could I go to find out their approximate value.
Regarding the Roulettes the value is seldom high. Not like Blue Note for Sure. Music is Great though.
For prices looka at popsike.com and type in artist + roulette. If the record is more that $25 it shows up. Or look at ebay.com to see what similar items there are. Completed listings are best to look at since many seller put out very optimistic “buy it now” offers.
As always condition of records are most important. Read about goldmine standards for grading and test play the records to avoid grouchy buyers (me being one š I hate to buy LPs from unexperienced sellers who grade things “like new” and the record sounds and looks like crap. Good luck!
I am looking to purchase, Charlie Parker With Strings, original Clef 12″ LP, MGC-675, (with the wonderful DSM portrait of a mustachioed Bird).
Reasonable condition is all that I need.
Hope you can help. Many thanks.
I would like to..sell..these Jazz-records,L.P’s..All ‘played’ few time, please tell me ‘which’ one can be of your interests..

I have an original Dexter Gordon blows Hot and Cool on Dootone DL-207 on translucent red vinyl in vg condition that I am interested to trade with any interested reader of this forum. The record is well played judging from the spindle hole wear and there are surface scratches. It’s play graded with the Miyajima Premium Mono mkIi, there are crackles heard but the music is loud and clear without any distortion indicating that the grooves are not worn. There is no skip and no stick throughout. If you are interested please PM me. Regards. Chee Kia
Yesterday, late at night, i thought i was about to WIN an original Blue Note on Ebay…. Can you imagine ? It has been three years since i did not win any jazz record on Ebay. I focused on a fine copy of “Fickle Sonance”, my favourite Jackie Album and one of my all time favourite, in EX condition. I decided to bid 300, but i was not 100 % confortable with my max bid…I was right, it went for 356. What a relief. š
Well I just got my first Norgran. Johnny Hodges – Memories of Ellington. Of course those of you who know these pressings will laugh when I tell you that based on looks alone, I thought the thing wouldn’t play at all. I bought it as a learning experience, something to look up, perhaps gain some insight into Norgran. But apparently my buck bought something that’s not only playable but playing cleaner that a whole lot of pretty lookin’ disks in the basement. It’s a pretty engaging for me. Now to someone in the know, it’s probably not even worth my buck, but it’s kinda priceless to me!
I have a bunch of Prestiges that have “RW” stamped on the covers and labels. Does this mean Robert Weinstock or something else? Apologize if this has been answered before.
I want to ..sell.. these Records Vinyls of ”JAZZ – PROGRESSIVES” of some ‘groups and Italians+Jazzmen’. Ask me for the informactions ”YOU” may need.

Does anyone know the deal on the original “Dear Old Stockholm” as performed by Stan Getz? I know it was initially issued (in US) on Roost, but is NOT on the Complete Roost Recordings box issued by Blue Note some yrs back. Is it ONLY to be found on a Japanese issue of “The Sound of..” or is there another compilation I’m overlooking?
i have a large collection of jazz records and jazz books which I need to find a good home for at the right price Many vinyl Lps are 50s blue note verve etc. Contact me if you are interested
ceedee: Roost issued Stan’s swedish recordings under a deal with Metronome records in Stockholm. You may find them on the Metronome two-fers issued some 25 years ago. One of them is named “Americans in Sweden”.
Amongst my Tubby Hayes / Ronnie Scott collection i have a LP on Tempo Tap Label called Speak Low songs from 1955 to 1957 are on the album which i think was recorded in 1959 has anyone else come across it
Playing Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman when jazz hit the middle east according to the sleeve notes i notice that Quincy Jones is a member of the band did he play with Dizzy very often
In my weird but true column for the day, I responded to an online ad looking to sell 120 or so jazz records for $200. I spoke of couple times to the seller on the phone who lived in a much rougher part of town than me (usually a good sign). Said that he and wife had the records for years and she was a big jazz fan. He listed some titles and artists which met my tastes although the presence of several Prestige 2-fers was not too exciting. But the price was right so I made the trip.
I go into his ramshackle home and he is an older guy, very nice. He directs me to the boxes and he reiterates the price is firm and I have to take them all or nothing. I start thumbing through the records. Lots of Ellington, Satch, Wes on A&M, Cal Trajder, etc. Some of the records have new price tags that it looks like someone just put on for like $10, $15, etc. I start taking a closer look at some of the records, trying to figure out if I have that title or not. I then notice that some of the records have older price tags from places I have haunted in other cities around the country.
And then it hits me. This is the collection of records I dumped at the Salvation Army at Christmas 6 months ago!!!
I call the seller over and say, Don’t take this the wrong way, but did you get your “family collection” at a thrift store a few months back? He gets a sheepish grin and admits that he goes to alot of thrift stores. I then say, these all are the records I donated.
He says, “Well you can still have them for $200.”
I politely said I will take a pass. I didn’t want them
6 months ago and I certainly am not going to pay for my records twice.
You know that you have been in this crazy hobby way too long when you start accumulating your old crap again.
Hey,DaveS: I’m reading your “Weird Tales” entry and could swear I was hearing strains of an old TV show in the background..
“DaveS,an avid jazz fan and devotee of life’s finer things,is heading to a little ramshackle house on the seedier part of town in search of a ‘big score’. Little does he know that his travels will take him on a frightening journey far beyond the familiar area of his local confines,a trip whose final stop lies uncomfortably close to the outer reaches of…The Twilight Zone”(Insert creepy music here).
Thank goodness Agnes Morehead didn’t pummel me with a giant broom or I didn’t wake up as a Miles Davis mannequin permanently facing the wall in an abandoned record store.
Question for all of you knowledgeable folks out there. I recently bought an original copy of Eric Dolphyās āOut to Lunchā (one of my favorite jazz albums). The seller had listed the record as VG++ with most of it being NM. Iām happy with the record, but itās not what I would describe as NM as it has some slight ticks here and there (nothing that distracts from the music except a little on track one). Overall it sounds wonderful and I was wondering if my grading technique is too harsh for a record of its age. Do people use a sliding scale based on the age of an album? I expect NM to sound as quiet as my Music Matters copy.
Tough question. Theoretically it should not matter what the age of the record is. Realistically, I would take anyone saying a 50 year old record is NM with a high degree of skepticism before I purchased.
My rule of thumb on these things is if you are happy with the deal you struck grading it at VG++, keep the record. If you feel you paid a premium for a pristine record and didn’t get it, I would contact the seller and say, “I think you overgraded this a bit. I like the record and want to keep it but want to avoid the hassles of the Postal Service to return it, so I would appreciate it if you lowered the price by $XX. If this option does not work, I would be happy to return the record, etc.”
Personally, if you factor in the hassle of repacking, going to the USPS, and trying to squeeze the seller for a refund of your shipping fees plus the fees you paid to ship it back to him, getting a few bucks back will make you feel better in most cases.
Of course if you really wanted a Music Matters quality pressing, good luck with the hunt.
Thanks DaveS! That’s what I figured. Iām actually happy with the price and the record, but was interested in what other people thought. Iām pretty harsh on grading, and I wanted to know if I needed to adjust my expectations on older records. I just started buy on E-bay again after having left for many years due to inaccurate grading. I have a few preferred sellers, but sometime you gotta gamble. Thanks again.
GIXEN SNIPES: does anyone have the experience of sniping at 3 seconds, rather than the proposed 6 seconds before closing? Why do they propose 6, because 3 secs is deemed too short, or does a 3 secs snipe work without problem?
I used to snipe at 3 seconds without a problem (with the exception of course that I refuse to bid what the other bidders were willing to pay.)
Given you are overseas, I believe that you could be subject to some latency in getting your bids processed by eBay in California. Maybe run some lowball sample snipes that you know you won;t win to test out the shorter time frames.
I saw a snipe come in at 1 second one time(seriously). Not something I would recommend, since my computer always does it’s “connecting..connecting” thing at those moments. There is nothing more frustrating than watching an item go for a few dollars that may have easily been your own. Bottom lie? Just have fun..
Whenever I buy a Blue Note record on eBay, about 35% of the time the seller also sends the original paper sleeve. For a Prestige (and the related family), I rarely get one.
Any theories? Did Prestige only use paper sleeves for a short time?
I’m looking for a serious jazz collector who would be interested in buy the personal belongings of Jimmy Smith the greatest Jazz organist of all time. I have many personalized items of his from his photos, much paper work with his signature, a lot of his paper work of importance of things such as his royalties, letters to people about shows, things from his night club he owned, to his reel to reels there’s about 20 of them. If you are interested email me at alleyesonmeshorty@yahoo.com. I even have a proof of letter this has been sold before.
DaveS: Prestige had onion skin inners until 1958/9, roughly. Thereafter there was a short spell (one year) with inners showing the available catalogue. Blue and reddish printing. Thereafter they came with plain white inners, either with a hole showing the label or without.
Fredrik re Jaro Jam. I don’t consider myself being a specialist of Jaro Jam, a short lived subsidiary of the U.K. Top Rank label.
I do have the two outstanding jazz albums on the label (K.D. and J.R. Monterose). My copies, both monaural, have the same DG labels as the second one you show (on Popsike), so mainly blue with a white chip. The one now on EBay is white with a blue chip, just the opposite. To be honest, I have no idea whether this one is original or not. It looks like an authentic, vintage production, but whether it really is, I don’t know.
Somebody got a steal on the Art Pepper record, “Intensity”. At 150 $, that was at least half price. Good buy for a collector, or anyone else in the vintage jazz record market.
I noticed some auctions on Popsike claim that the mostly white Jaro label is a promo label as some records with this label are in Promo stamped/stickered jackets. Not sure if this is true or not.
Aaron: allright, if that’s true then you could call these versions 1st original pressings as well I guess.. I would choose the turquoise labels either way as my copy.
Iāve often been curious about the relative value of Mono vs Stereo LP’s (other than the clear re-releases, or the ‘electronically re-channeled”) āI know that in early BN’s, for example, monos seem to bring higher prices, perhaps since the stereos are later releases – when both were released contemporaneously, it’s not that clear – my curiosity further stimulated by Djukic’s frequent claims that a given Stereo offer is āmuch rarerā than the mono. Is information on the relative rarity of stereo vs mono readily available? and what is the relative value in most situations?
I know that many collectors, especially from Japan, favored Mono over Stereo for many years. I can’t speak to why (and we can debate the sonic merits and the fold down question) but that preference certainly has historically driven up the price of M over S. I also believe that early on BN, pressed more Monos as people didn’t have stereo HiFis. Over time though, and certainly into 4200s, I might think they pressed as many Stereo as Mono. All of this is based on what I have been able to pick up; nothing more or less. No one was been able to produce a pressing run quantity for any BNs, so it would be difficult to speak with absolute authority on the subject.
Bob is an excellent marketer. If my sales team had half the skills as him, I could retire early and actually afford his records! My gut tells me that since the market prices are higher for M over S, Bob is trying to create demand for his Stereo inventory.
I am pretty confident that if Alfred Lion’s family found a hidden vault and offered him at no cost 25 of any single record pressed at the same time in M and S, he would take the Monos despite the “rarity” of the equivalent Stereo.
Ceedee:nice link, didn’t knew that one… and, wow, what a big (flugel)horn for such a clean and small boy!

Hi Geoff,
unfortunately, no.
Should I?
GST:
Thanks again.
wow.. someone got the deal of the century..

For those who think $1,000 is WAY over the top for an original Blue Note(or any other lp for that matter),the new series of BN reissues from Japan look pretty interesting. Check this sellers list out. From the pictures you’d think they just turned up in a recently discovered warehouse. Anyone hear them yet?

GIXEN SNIPES: does anyone have the experience of sniping at 3 seconds, rather than the proposed 6 seconds before closing? Why do they propose 6, because 3 secs is deemed too short, or does a 3 secs snipe work without problem?
Rudolf:
OOPs:that’s “bottom line”…
Totally Random Observation:
DaveS: great question. I’ve made the same observation and am interested in some insights!
DaveS: Prestige had onion skin inners until 1958/9, roughly. Thereafter there was a short spell (one year) with inners showing the available catalogue. Blue and reddish printing. Thereafter they came with plain white inners, either with a hole showing the label or without.
I guess Rudolf is the man to answer this question: on eBay now there is a copy of The Arrival Of Kenny Dorham on Jaro 5007, here’s the link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290932923768
…but these labels are different than the ones I thought were original, these:
http://www.popsike.com/The-Arrival-of-KENNY-DORHAM-Original-first-DG-Jaro-NM/360389180150.html
Both seem to have deep grooves. So which ones are the originals, both maybe?
Thx very much for your comment on the subject Rudolf. Anyone else familiar with this little mystery?
I am pretty confident that if Alfred Lion’s family found a hidden vault and offered him at no cost 25 of any single record pressed at the same time in M and S, he would take the Monos despite the “rarity” of the equivalent Stereo.
wow..another one that is (quickly)leaving my price range. Oh,well…

Although this seller doesn’t seem too familiar with the images that he’s selling(incorrect identifications of musicians, etc,)there are still a few goodies here. Anytime you can get an original contact sheet from Burt Goldblatt you’ve got quality. BTW,ck out the images listed as “Hank Mobley”. ..what do you think?
