Do any of you regular guys here listen to any jazz from this decade? I recently just started getting into Matana Roberts, for example, but I can’t really think of any others. Maybe Fire! Orchestra or Tiger Hatchery…
anyone?
I find such artists to be refreshingly risk-taking, as a lot of today’s jazz, to my ears, is pop dogshit for Stepford wives(Botti, Abair, etc.)
Gregory – no. We see a lot of live jazz, but we don’t buy CDs of even the performers we like (e.g., We Six, Ryan Kaiser). There are many decades of superb jazz vinyl out there, and I could never listen to all of it even if I tried. As a result, a smooth CD of a current group just does not do it for these ears. Heck, the reason we like to see We Six live is that they sound like the Jazz Messengers!
Gregory- Check out Vijay Iyer, a great pianist who has two vinyl albums. There are tons of good things from Chicago(home of Matana Roberts) including Exploding Star Orchestra with Rob Mazurek (I like their 1st vinyl Lp on Thrill Jockey). Also on Thrill Jockey vinyl is Edward Wilkerson Jr. with 8 Bold Souls. They have a few things out, all terrific. Just about any new release on Delmark is on vinyl as well and well worth checking out. New York has a rich group of players, but not much in the way of new vinyl. The new Uri Caine is available but disappointing. Geri Allen has a great double LP of solo piano and Dave Douglas has put out some things on vinyl, but for the most part, all the better players are Cd only.
I’m trying to find out what happened to the late Freddie Roach, who ceased recording and moved to France at the end of the 1960’s.
I’ve posted on this on my own blog:- http://downwithit.info/2013/11/29/mo-greens-please-freddie-roach/
on a number of occasions recently- but I’ve not heard anything yet. A sleeve note suggests that he may have worked as a movie actor for a while. Can anyone shed any light on what became of him?
Gregory – I was probably unclear. I meant that we have not really got into any contemporary performers because, when we see them, they remind us of the past masters, and we then simply turn to the original LPs we already have. That’s probably a bit tortured, but I hope I explained it better. Thanks, however, for the recommendations. Always want to hear something new.
As to current performers and vinyl, Brad Mehldau’s early trio recordings are sadly not on vinyl. Neither is Kurt Elling Live in Chicago (superb, before he went adult contemporary on us).
Rudolf: do you have another Workin’ w. the Miles Davis Qnt for sale? In as good a nick as the one you sold on the bay before? Then I’m interested. Contact me through this address if it’s possible: lindeshadiablo@hotmail.com
Just thought I’d let someone (anyone?) know that it was 50 years ago today that I made my first record sale. Only another 50 to go, then I might retire!
I see where Yeah by Charlie Rouse went for $498 it was a demo copy with not for sale stamped on it.
There is a 1995 re-issue on the same label,( Epic)at $99.I have a copy in the same condition on Fontana Should I aim just above the re-issue or lower? Anyone help me with this please
Still no new info on Freddie Roach following his departure from the USA at the end of the 60’s.
It is believed that he went to France and died in the early 1970’s although I have not found anything yet about him performing while in Europe.
Did any visitors to this site ever see him perform live?
I’ve posted recently (19 Dec2013) re his Brown Sugar album on my own site:- http://downwithit.info/2013/12/19/brown-sugar-freddie-roach/
Any news would be received with great interest.
A friend of mine in Boston picked this up over the summer. He’s been trying to sell it for a while now and hasn’t had much luck. It’s a one of kind thing (Broadside from Boston’s Hi-Hat). I know there is a very specific niche of collectors who would find any interest in something like this.. Trying to help the guy out, does anyone have any leads?
Hi Andy, IMHO that sign looks waaaaaay too new to be 1950’s era with none of the aging that naturally appears on wood and paint. FYI there is seller on ebay that makes modern signs with vintage style just like this.
I have about 60 old 78 rpms, mostly pressed in London late 1940s , early 1950s in their original covers, plus 20 or so early 33/1/3rpms, all reissues of New Orleans Jazz recordings from 1917- 1952. If anyone is interested in the titles I have, I can send you a detailed list, or I can post it in this forum if I am allowed. Please contact me on

Do not sell to ebay user bookofballards he’s already on this web page under the name bookofballard and changed his username. He pays, receives item and leaves negative feedback and then files a claim in paypal to receive a refund.
He keeps the record and the money.
I just want to save everyone that sells on ebay the hassle I had over the period of 2 months with over 25 emails and ebay messages.
Even after showing the user a screen capture of my Paypal shipping label, he still didn’t believe me. The worst part is that this was only a $10 item and he ruined my 100% feedback because of this. This ruins my reputation and lowers the odds of someone buying from me in the future after they read his negative feedback.
Bookofballards is the worst buyer I have ever dealt with on Ebay. STAY AWAY from him, and cancel his bids if you don’t like high levels of stress.
I bought a Box of Perfect condition 45s from the fifties from an old lady. Sonny Rollins, Mingus, Getz, Miles Davis, Modern jazz Quartet, etc. I think this is grade A stuff but I don`t really know what to do With them. Most of it is printed in denmark sweden or norway, where I live. Is there a lot of interest in well kept old jazz 45s With sleeves and With no wear on sleeves or media. The lady also gave me 200 jazz 78s. All classic Works from 30s,40s,50s. Any suggestions. my email is eroedb@hotmail.com
When it comes to jazz collectors, how do we (you) feel about Riverside albums pressed by Research Craft? These are the ones you find with the “US PAT/GB PAT) stamped on the dead wax. Are they less desirable in terms of collecting? I have a few of them and I feel they sound lively, but perhaps a little less “warm” than other a Riversides I have.
In looking for a new listing of jazz lps by Anthony Pearson,I came across an interesting(though brief)piece online. Scroll down and check out a partial shot of his lp wall-complete with a cool teepee “getaway”. Artist, collector and someone with the sense to own a system worthy of the music played on it…
Hello,
i’d like to offer some records for sale here :

@Geoff: I’m interested in the UK jazzmen you mention. Do you have any records by them for trade/sale?
Hi Aaron
Glassine is like the rice paper/ onion skin inners right?
This stuff was like cellulose. Totally clear except for a brownish tint from age.
So any idea about what inners a Blue Note 10 inch from 1951 would have come with?
Lander. Thanks for the reply.I have selection of Tubby Hayes,The jazz Couriers,The London Jazz Quartet, all on Tempo Tap. Several Tubby Hayes on Fontana. Andy:
Please feel free to post links like this BEFORE someone has made the score. 😉
“HAS A COUPLE OF LITE SCUFFS & HAS A COUPLE OF VERY LITE SCRATCHES(NO DEEP SCRATCHES) & HAS SOME EDGE WARE [sic]” presumably not play tested
Are you so sure this is a “score?”
I bought a stone mint Quiet Kenny from this guy three years ago, for around the same price. He had it listed as VG+.
He’s very conservative.. he said he retired from the industry. The mind reels as to what he still has squirreled away.

JOE: Oh I wasn’t talking about CD’s. Matana’s latest work is out on 180gm vinyl. And it sounds wonderful.
Many labels still release vinyl, much of it in decent quality.
I more was talking about jazz from this era. Most musicians who respect their craft releases vinyl if they can.
Gregory- Check out Vijay Iyer, a great pianist who has two vinyl albums. Thanks as always Rudolf! I have many records where the vinyl is in nice shape, but the Jacket is in quite poor shape.
Yusef Lateef died, 93! years old. RIP
Just thought I’d let someone (anyone?) know that it was 50 years ago today that I made my first record sale. Only another 50 to go, then I might retire!
Terry, we can shake hands. I started also in Autumn 1963.
Rudolph,
We must be very boring, finding nothing better to do for that many years. Of course, from a profit stand-point, it has been worth it!

Hi Everyone
Sorry i hope it is ok to post this here. I work for the Australian charity Mission Australia. We have recently had about 800 Jazz records donated to us. We are currently in the process of researching each record. The ones we find to be of value will be listed on ebay. The rest will be put up in bulk sales of about 30 each. Iam not a dealer. But please note that all records are in excellent condition and unless stated literally dont have a scratch or mark on them. The covers generally show small amounts of wear here and there. At the moment they are only listed Australia wide. We are happy to post worldwide, but as you probably know postage can get quite expensive. This is our store if you were interested in having a look. http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&_okw=&_oexkw=&_adv=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_ftrt=901&_ftrv=1&_sabdlo=&_sabdhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=200&_fpos=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_fss=1&_fsradio=%26LH_SpecificSeller%3D1&_saslop=1&_sasl=bigheartenterprise&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50
