Maarten: yes, I was there, on the Concertgebouw podium, more or less under the piano! I made many pictures.
Thanks for the info re a CD issue of this concert.
nice to hear rudolph.
And you made pictures, wow… you’re in good compagny, Ed vd Elsken en Eddy posthuma de boer also made some pics that evening! Would love to see your collection of photographs of that period. I think, the dutch jazz archive will also be verry interested.
Here is a link to a program that has been aired today in Netherlands, about the dutch Jazz archive and jazz history in the netherlands. http://www.npo.nl/vrije-geluiden/12-10-2014/VPWON_1219475
Maarten: thanks for this interesting link to “het Nederland’s Jazz Archief”.
During most of the concerts in the Kurzaal and het Concertgebouw between 1958 and 1962 I made some pictures. But Ed van der Elsken in his “Jazz”, Bezige Bij, 1959 and Jazz Fragment, 1991 said it all, I was just an amateur.
Hi….I need help with a jazz acetate I have found. If anyone can throw any info on it please e-mail me !!!!!! The item is Bunk Johnson and his band. The tracks all come from 1944. The track list is : New iberia blues / Sister kate / The saints / Panama / When you wore a tulip / St. Louis blues / Darktown strutters ball / Weary blues.
I have had various people contact me and offering to purchase it…..but I am a bit reluctant before I find out. I can provide photos.
Can some help me with the big difference in postage charges from the US. to mainland UK.I have paid $100 for some records with $18 postage. Sometimes sellers are looking for $48 postage for the same value or record. Does it depend from which state they are from, or are they being greedy?
Geoff,
It depends on what USPS service is being used. The cheapest to the UK is First Class International which starts about $21 but cannot be tracked or insured. The cheapest trackable/insurable option is Priority International which starts around $48.
i have a lexington bn 1539, 6 pieces of silver, that needs a cover. i would take ANY lexington cover in ANY condition, so don’t just throw it away if you buy a crappy one in a lot, or a crap LP with a passable cover! i’ll pay a few clams for one!
I came across this great site looking for some jazz history. Long story short – My grandfather was Bobby Troup, best known for writing the song “Route 66”, if you don’t know of him. His second wife was actress/singer Julie London. My family and I have been going through items from their estate and found some wonderful things. I have an Ebay store and would LOVE to reach the jazz community! We have some niche items that I know jazz fans will appreciate, so I thought it would be great to post here.
I’ll be listing some autograph photos of jazz musicians/singers in the next day or two, so I wanted to let you all know about it.
Please do share the store if you find anything you like, and feel free to message me with any questions. It’s a joy to bring my granddad’s things to those who appreciate it.
I think I’ve possibly got a test pressing of Charlie Christian’s “Jazz Immortal”. Esoteric ES-548, has a thick white generic sleeve with lots of handwritten notes about the musicians, which tracks to go on the release and even querying if some tracks should be renamed. The musicians listed don’t quite marry up with the official release, for example someone called Klook is mentioned as being on drums, also Clyde Hart and Kermit Scott on trumpet Have only just started researching as I got it today but considering the historic nature of those gigs and how they were recorded I thought it may be of value in terms of the history of jazz and the birth of bop?
The label has one side Christan with Charlie misspelt as Charley, the other side is Dizzy for the first three tracks and then Charlie for the next two.
at the bottom left is the name Hank with a surname starting with T and a year which I can’t make out, possibly ’56.
I have been rewriting my Mother-in-law’s journals which she kept as a young girl until her passing. In the autumn of 1937 she traveled from Vancouver BC to Bellingham WA to a Duke Ellington jazz concert, with her staple, an autograph book. She was invited backstage afterward and asked for their autographs. On one page we have Best Wishes Duke Ellington and on the facing page band members have signed, firstly Joe Nanton, followed by Fred Guy (guitar), Sonny Greer drums, Lawrence Brown, Juan Tigol and Barney Bigard sax. Does anyone on this forum feel these autographs are of value?
Hi there, I have a 45 single on World Pacific Records, on the a side is Bewitched by jack Montrose sextet featuring Ralph Pena and the single is title ‘souvenir of 1960 new Zealand tour’….on the B side, Pete Jolly playing younger than springtime.

mayby it is already mentioned here and i missed it.
But today i bought a new book on blue note records:
Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression by richard havers
beautifully disigned, a detailed story of the beginning, 400 pages!, and beautifull never published before pictures from francis wolf. Also lots of contact sheets, so you see all the alternative photo’s that never made it. (for example , there was a lot of smiling going on in the studio of van gelder, now you see it,… )
Just got my Amazon delivery of the new Blue Note book too. Nice presentation; very heavy and hard to read in bed. Seems like more a labor of love commissioned by the label, but cool nonetheless.
regarding the new blue note book:
i see that our esteamed member LondenJazz has a contribution in the book: The labelography of blue note..
and indeed Dave S> : it is not a critical book about BN, but nontheless, and for most of us nothing new, but it is nice to have this book, not so manny books about bn around.
i just got a nice duplicate of charles mingus “pre-bird” original mercury d/g release. if anyone is looking for it and wants to possibly trade, please shoot me an e-mail to trout (at) susqu (dot) edu.
I was interested in knowing if there has been comparisons between the original Blue Notes and the 33rpm Music Matters reissue series. I have the Sonny Clark Cool Struttin’ and wondered why the original would be worth seeking out. The MM re-issue is from the master tapes and is only $40, the sound seems perfect.
The Blue Note Re-Issue of Cool Struttin’ by Sonny Clark by Music Matters Ltd. is such great quality it makes me wonder why anyone would pay so much for the original. Its taken off the original tapes and might even sound better than the original.
AJB The Music Matters sure sound great and probably better that the originals. MMs are however in stereo and not to everyones liking. (I myself prefer stereo). The reason for the high prices is as you understand not SQ but the simple fact that they are “Originals” ie. first pressings and collectors love original pressings and are willing to pay a lot for them.
New site up, the same address; http://www.fwrarejazzvinylcollector.com
New, larger beautiful images of the records will be put up here and now you can comment on the posts! I will fill the site with more links to content a.s.a.p. I’ll try to post regularly. Enjoy everyone. Cheerio, Fredrik
Well:
It’s out of Australia – it’s some thick liquid that you massage onto the surface of a record — it then dries to a film in 5-6 hours which can be pealed off, supposedly bringing with it all the muck in the grooves
There’s a YouTube movie on its use.
What I don’t know is if any of the reliable reviewers have tested it, or even if you can buy it in the US
I would like to offer for sale, our collection of old records of Jazz, (long play, pasta and Vinyl). Among the authors Louis Armstrong, and many others. –

corrections and additions to my previous post;
Klook is Kenny Clarke
Kermit Scott plays Tenor Sax
Eldridge and Shavers both get a mention against a couple of tracks but with question marks. Also Don Byas.
Kenny Kersey on piano too.
At the very top is written “Minton’s – Clarke/Monroe’s Uptown House 1941”
Cheers!

AJB – there was a long, painfully detailed discussion about this very topic over at LJC, where some of the Music Matters guys chimed in: http://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2013/05/18/sonny-rollins-vol-1-1956-blue-note-music-matters-edition/

A United Artists press Zoot & Jutta Hipp with a cut corner, no less, for $76 bucks!? What’s up with Zoot & Jutta Hipp? When was the second pressing? I have a Liberty copy I believe.
GST, the Liberty was the second pressing.
Correction, United Artists not Liberty.
