For all of the NYC area music lovers, next month-March 10th,to be exact-will bring a great line-up of pianists to the Village Vanguard as part of the 80th Aniversary Year celebration. Also in March-Ayako Shirasaki Trio at Kitano(5th) and Steve Kuhn Trio w/ Buster Williams,Joey Baron at Jazz Standard(12-15th). Looks like a fine month for piano lovers…a sure sign of spring. See you there!
I saw this on Craigslist in Hartford. Not my neck of the woods, but if anyone is interested, here is what the ad said: “Jazz collection 100 lp all very good plus to near mint estate from a musician likes of coltrane monk mulligan mingus Mobley call email for details and viewing”. You just never know.
Seller on E-bay sold Roland Kirk Triple Threat for 1,250 last week in Auction. Seller has over 6,000 albums to list from a 70 year old collection! To those interested seller:needcash1000.
Aaron, interesting Turrentine but: have you noticed the discordant dates on test pressing? 6/9/64 AND 6/9/66?
the recording sessions took place between 6/3/64 and 9/4/64.
there’s something wrong.
Hi Doctor Jazz,
The handwriting might not appear clear in the photos but both labels have the date 6/9/66. This makes sense as the only other test pressing of this to come on the open market was a stereo pressing in 2009 (that sold for $764) and has the dates 6/13/66 on the labels. I’m aware that the session was from 1964 but what I speculate is that in 1966 when Blue Note was selling to Liberty they had Rudy pull unreleased sessions to see what recordings from the back catalog they wanted to put out, like the consecutive catalog number BLP 4235 which was recorded in 1963 but released in 1966.
Opinion??
There is a Bill Evans “New Jazz Conceptions” Riverside, White Label that just popped up on ebay.
This lp has the original black and white cover.
Lp does NOT have deep grooves though. The cover looks original with no “inc” on it. Labels look good too also with no “inc”. I always thought the progression on those riversides was from white deep groove to small blue with deep groove which would have also been the 2nd cover used on that particular lp?
any ideas??
Here is the Bill Evans “NJC conceptions”. Looks like the cover is laminated, “418”Adress looks legitimate, ni INc, but no flat, No DG ! Never seen such a combination. Very interesting.
Here’s another 1568, by the famous Bob “Mr undestatement” D. The cover is listed as VG+ (:-))… but it is also stated as “the pinnacle of hard bop”. Everything is possible with Bob D !
Thanks for listing that one Michel. Bob has really exceeded even his worst listings here. That cover is worth no more than a generous VG; G would be more accurate.
However, to give credit where credit is due, if you ignore his valuation and read his very careful listing of defects (as well as carefully perusing the pictures), you would really have no reason to complain.
The problem comes when you get to the vinyl – since he never play-grades, you really have to go by the listing, and that, IMHO, is taking a significant chance.
Price is now over $1400, which is dumbfounding!
I apologize Shaft for not noticing that for once he did pay-grade this LP – would like to know more about the “minor surface noise here and there” particularly in vies of the description of the vinyl with several long “abrasions” – I guess if you are willing to ignore the crappy cover, and as long as he’s willing to take the LP back if it turns out to be worse than described, you might be willing to take a chance – but for moare than a grand???
Can any experts chip in on the Evans NJC? Thinking of bidding but no DG is putting me off, as there are LJC website states all white labels must have DG…
This is definitely not deep groove, the pictures are very clear and the seller even states it. I’ve never seen a non-DG white label but I did have a non-DG small blue label (Clark Terry – Serenade To A Bus Seat) which I thought was was odd. This is a strange one indeed but it didn’t seem to put bidders off too much!
alright, guys i need some advice: i am going, for the first time in my collecting career, to look at and maybe purchase a collection this weekend. it contains, as the seller assured me, some original blue notes, lexingtons and otherwise, and a few nice prestiges as well as some other things. i have a partial list and am excited by what i see. of course i will be looking at each record and judging quality and provenance for myself when i get there and see them up close. i’ll do my best to keep a poker face.
my main question is: assuming i end up wanting to purchase this collection, how does one go about negotiating and making offers, in your own experiences? it seems advantageous to get the seller to make the first offer, so you can maybe pay less than you were willing, or know if you are out of your league. how do you estimate prices as you go, when it comes to buying bulk? he is willing to sell the whole lot for much less than market, according to him… but that could mean a lot of things.
the fellow seems nice enough and agreed to meet me at a time i suggested, and has been very thorough with images and information… but we will see when we get there. he seems to have an inflated idea of what some of the more choice pieces might be worth, but i am mentally armed with my own research across discogs, ebay, popsike, etc, though i don’t like the idea of us being adversaries. he wants money for records and i want records for money, so we are on the same team, really!
i plan to be frank and honest. any words of advice, caution, etc?

Hi guys, going through a some jazz records my dad left behind. I came across a 1955, RIVERSIDE 1023-BIX BEIDERBECKE WITH WOLVERINES- 10″ LP.
A common enough album even considering its an original release date. The big kicker is it’s in RED VINYL.
I’ve spent the last hour or two researching online and have not seen any version in red vinyl or even any references to Riverside Records releasing any colored vinyl. Anybody know of this copy?
So it seems like this is a very rare copy. Have I struck gold?
It’s been stored in closets for its life by the looks, it has been played. The vinyl is scuffed/light scratching, the label is almost new and the vinyl condition looks excellent. The cover looks good, no record imprint/little wear but some wear on the edges and part split on top seam.
Hello all! I’m happy to report that while I did not buy the whole collection, I did get some very nice 10” records, and most of the choice pieces of the collection for a very fair price. Some nice original 10” pressings on Blue Note, Prestige, Roost, Dial, etc.
Michel,
Wow, are these people just dumb? They can’t think it’s original as it clearly doesn’t have a deep groove plus it has an line of text on the back bottom of the jacket. Maybe they are, as I had a Classic Records reissue (just like this 1568) of Dial S For Sonny on eBay that was listed as a “Reissue” with that in the title and again in the description and still had a person ask if it had an “ear” and RVG in the deadwax.
PS – I also had this exact same reissue of 1568 up a short while ago (in better condition) for $39.99 Buy-It-Now or Best Offer and it was up for ten days with no takers/offers so I sold it elsewhere. Something is fishy with this one…
Thanks for posting on youtube. I was trying to determine if there was any particular order to how you chose to display the records. It is not by artist or by catalog number. Is it for maximum effect to keep the viewer guessing what is next and getting increasingly jealous?
Dave, thanks for comment. Records are supposed to be in decreasing catalog order. There maybe some mis matches here and there. More to come with Jazzland Prestige and various labels…

aaron thanks: so the date on labels is completely unrelated to recording dates and may be referred to the to the time of printing . is it right?
Exactly! The date on the label is when the record was cut or pressed, not when the session was recorded.

Earl, Bob did actually playgrade the 1568 one to Mint- (if I remember it right). I have a very hard time believing this. Very hard.

Hi Earl,
You can tell by the label texture and font that the Serge Chaloff album is a reissue, most likely one of these two: http://www.soundstagedirect.com/serge-chaloff-blue-serge-180-gram-vinyl-lp.shtml
or
http://www.soundstagedirect.com/serge-chaloff-blue-serge-vinyl-lp.shtml

Thanks for that
How can you tell anything about the texture? and can you be more specific about the font?
Earl, see here:

my copy is just like this one: has Made in USA on back cover, bottom left
Los Angeles Calif, bottom right
