Interesting find today. Test pressing from Plaza Sound Studios of Wes Montgomery’s Full House. I bought a 1,000 plus record collection from the family of an Indianapolis DJ from the 50s and 60s. The son claimed that his dad was good friends from Wes as they both grew up in Indy. Now I believe him!!

Recently picked up a nice copy of the Will Davis Trio titled “Have Mood, Will Call” on the Sue label. I’m not too familiar with this group or label. Anyone else have this lp??
Hi Terry. I have the record and like it. Recorde in 1959 it was his only session as a leader. It was probably recorded in Detroit. I knew him before, from the Kenny Burrell Soul Call album and he was a member of Burrell’s band at the time (1964). There is a nice little bio in those notes. He also was on the Howard McGhee Milt Jackson sides on Savoy from 1948 and the Sonny Stitt / Milt Jackson Galaxy sides from that same year. He was a local Detroit musician and backed all the cats coming through town. Enjoy.

It’s my first post here so be kind if I make some mistakes.
Today I found an acetate record, not in very good shape, layer begins to peel off, some scratches but playable, I took a fast look on internet but do not find any information about this until now.
There are a lot of acetate records , not always interesting but this one appeals me: the record is a standard shape 33rpm, with a machine typed label. On the label there are 3 interesting names: Lionel Hampton , Benny Goodman, Hawkins, the titles are:
Side one :
1) Screamin’ boogie (V-disc)
2) Drum stomp
Side two:
1)Dinah (b.Goodman quartet)
2)Dinah (avec Hawkins) [yes i’m french, the record label is in french too)
3) Limehouse blues ( the writer made a mistake, this title is replaced by a handwritten one: Ida, sweet as apple cider b.goodman quartet)
I have several albums from the American Recording Society. From all I can tell, they’re not worth much, which isn’t important (although I am a bit curious as to why).
The one I’m looking at right now is: “Anita Sings for Oscar” (O’day & Peterson’s classic trio).
Beautiful sound (I see a 2012 post which among other things said the sound pn ARS was consistently superior to other (e.g., Verve)) releases. No cardboard cover; comes in a heavy plastic sleeve.
I’m not sure if this will be of any interest to anyone so apologies in advance if not……
I have an acetate disc of the Dave Brubeck Quartet Jazz at Oberlin. It is an Emidisc recording with Emidisc printed straight on the disc in green. It is two sided. It has two holes, from what I can gather the second hole is to hold the disc in place whilst recording and the centre is certainly metal, aluminium from what I can gather from google searches.
The cover is in an old plastic sleeve, with just the front cover artwork and a plain black back, no credits etc.
Is this of interest to anybody? I’ve been in touch with someone who says Dave Brubeck has fallen out of favour a bit but I’m hoping to pass this to someone who wants to maintain the acetate and keep for the future, it’s not safe in my novice hands!
I can certainly provide photographs and sound files if anyone needs further information.
I have a question… When a US seller sells an expensive jazz lp on Ebay to a winning bidder in Europe, what is the best method to assure it arrives safely? Is the lp usually insured or is it just sent with a signature required? Insurance overseas is quite expensive, but I can’t imagine sending a $300 lp without it, or at least where a signature is required. I’ve seen US sellers who advertise $21 shipping overseas. But that’s the cost for first class international shipping without any insurance or signature. How do these US sellers protect their interest when they ship expensive lps overseas? Thanks in advance for any responses.
I just sold a bunch of records on eBay and some went to Europe. I let the buyers determine the shipping method–1st class or Priority. Priority is more expensive, but quicker, offers insurance and tracking. 1st class does not. I encouraged the buyers to purchase insurance but none of them did. On the 1st class packages, I just bought the insurance myself. It cost 1% of the value you put on the item, so $3 for a $300 sale is not outrageous. Of course when you add in 10% from eBay and the 3% from Paypal, it does start to eat away at the purchase price.
Dave, I appreciate that information. I certainly understand why you would pop for the insurance yourself. Without insuring the lp, there’s several bad scenarios that could occur. And if you sold to residents of the US only, you limit your profits. I’ll be listing some high dollar lps soon, so your feedback helps. Thanks again.

A buddy of mine who is also a colleague and a brilliant mathematician recently had a severe seizure and through a series of obscenely unlucky circumstances, was in a coma for two weeks due to the aftermath. He amazingly woke up and seems to be mentally sound and physically okay, but he has a tremendously long road ahead of him medically, and the bills are getting crazy, too. I have several albums from the American Recording Society. From all I can tell, they’re not worth much, which isn’t important (although I am a bit curious as to why).
The one I’m looking at right now is: “Anita Sings for Oscar” (O’day & Peterson’s classic trio).
Beautiful sound (I see a 2012 post which among other things said the sound pn ARS was consistently superior to other (e.g., Verve)) releases. No cardboard cover; comes in a heavy plastic sleeve.
Anyone else have a similar experience?

I’m not sure if this will be of any interest to anyone so apologies in advance if not……
I have an acetate disc of the Dave Brubeck Quartet Jazz at Oberlin. It is an Emidisc recording with Emidisc printed straight on the disc in green. It is two sided. It has two holes, from what I can gather the second hole is to hold the disc in place whilst recording and the centre is certainly metal, aluminium from what I can gather from google searches.
The cover is in an old plastic sleeve, with just the front cover artwork and a plain black back, no credits etc.
Is this of interest to anybody? I’ve been in touch with someone who says Dave Brubeck has fallen out of favour a bit but I’m hoping to pass this to someone who wants to maintain the acetate and keep for the future, it’s not safe in my novice hands!
I can certainly provide photographs and sound files if anyone needs further information.

I have a question… When a US seller sells an expensive jazz lp on Ebay to a winning bidder in Europe, what is the best method to assure it arrives safely? Is the lp usually insured or is it just sent with a signature required? Insurance overseas is quite expensive, but I can’t imagine sending a $300 lp without it, or at least where a signature is required. I’ve seen US sellers who advertise $21 shipping overseas. But that’s the cost for first class international shipping without any insurance or signature. How do these US sellers protect their interest when they ship expensive lps overseas? Thanks in advance for any responses.

I just sold a bunch of records on eBay and some went to Europe. I let the buyers determine the shipping method–1st class or Priority. Priority is more expensive, but quicker, offers insurance and tracking. 1st class does not. I encouraged the buyers to purchase insurance but none of them did. On the 1st class packages, I just bought the insurance myself. It cost 1% of the value you put on the item, so $3 for a $300 sale is not outrageous. Of course when you add in 10% from eBay and the 3% from Paypal, it does start to eat away at the purchase price.

Dave, I appreciate that information. I certainly understand why you would pop for the insurance yourself. Without insuring the lp, there’s several bad scenarios that could occur. And if you sold to residents of the US only, you limit your profits. I’ll be listing some high dollar lps soon, so your feedback helps. Thanks again.

The collection is largely jazz from the 30s and 40s. Big band, Stan Kenton, Maynard ferguson, frank Sinatra, Benny goodman, woody Herman, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. there are also two large time/life collections.

A buddy of mine who is also a colleague and a brilliant mathematician recently had a severe seizure and through a series of obscenely unlucky circumstances, was in a coma for two weeks due to the aftermath. He amazingly woke up and seems to be mentally sound and physically okay, but he has a tremendously long road ahead of him medically, and the bills are getting crazy, too.
