Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This was a West 63rd Street pressing, deep grooves, but it did not have the New York 23 so, I guess, that would make it a clear second pressing, but a very early second pressing? The record was probably VG++ with some light surface noise and the cover was VG. The price was $908.

Kenny Dorham, Round ‘Bout Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia, Blue Note 1524. The consensus seems to be that this was a later pressing using old Lexington Avenue labels and an older Lexington Avenue back cover. It was listed as a first edition, however, replete with flat edge and deep grooves. The record was probably VG++ and the cover was VG. It sold for $578. It was, by the way, the same seller as the Mobley, who did all right with a couple of records that were not quite first pressings.

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad-Lib 6601. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,975.

A few more:

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Volume One, New Jazz 8260. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. I had a feeling the bidding would get heated for this one after my post and it did. The final price was $505.90.

Grant Green, Am I Blue, Blue Note 4139. This was an original New York USA pressing. The record was in M- condition and the cover was probably VG++, based on the description. The final price was $355.

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This was an original pressing. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $1,025.

Sonny Rollins, Volume 1, Blue Note 1542. This was not an original pressing, but was an early pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was in M- condition and the cover was lasted at VG+. It sold for $251.39.

Grant Green, Idle Moments, Blue Note 4154. This was an original pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The seller was bobdjukic and it was only listed as “rare” not “insanely rare.” No matter. It still got top dollar: $570.

And here are a few we’re watching for this week:

This is another one from bobdjukic and it is “ultra rare:” Sonny Rollins, Newk’s Time, Blue Note 4001. This is an original pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It is closing later today and the price is approaching $300. This seller has a lot of interesting items for sale, so you may want to check them out. Here’s another: John Coltrane, Coltrane, Impulse 21. This is an original stereo pressing that’s listed in excellent condition for the record and the cover, which we would translate to VG++. The price has been bid up to nearly $130, which is pretty high for a stereo version of this record.

Here goes:

Paul Gonsalves, Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick, Vocalion 587. This was an original British pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $1,593.88.

Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and it was in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $1,578.99.

This was a surprise to sell for such a high price tag: Clifford Brown Memorial Album, Blue Note 1526. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the framed cover. It was in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. It sold for $1,567.

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This was an original pressing. The cover was VG+, but the record was in VG or worse condition, based on the seller’s description. It sold for $1,376.11.

Finally, here’s one we meant to include from the Jazz Record Center auction because it was actually in the $3,000 bin:

Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. This was an original pressing that was probably in M- condition based on the description. It sold for $3,161.

Let us finally catch up on some of the rare jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay:

The Fabulous Fats Navarro, Volume 2, Blue Note 1532. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the Lexington Avenue cover. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $390. From the same seller, in the same vein: The Fabulous Fats Navarro, Volume 1, Blue Note 1531. This too was an original pressing with the original cover. It was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It also sold for $390. I was watching these records because I recently acquired copies of each of these that are duplicates for me. They are both in VG++ condition for the vinyl and the cover, and they both have the Lexington Avenue addresses on the label, deep grooves, etc. They have the West 61st Street addresses on the cover, so they are a drop less than original originals. I will probably wind up selling these on eBay, unless someone here wants to make me an offer I can’t refuse.

This one received a bid of nearly $2,000, but failed to meet the seller’s reserve price:

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad-Lib 6601. This was an original pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The top bid was $1,975.

This one has gone up in price since we’ve been watching through the years: Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. This was an original yellow label pressing with the New York address. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $535.

And then there is John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. This was an original black label mono pressing. It was listed in M- condition for the record and the cover, but the cover was clearly VG++ because of writing on the back and the record was probably VG++ as well because of a mark that made noise that was “barely audible.” It sold for $575.90.

Why is it that we — we collectors, that is — focus much more on what we are missing than on what we have?

Bud Powell, The Scene Changes, Blue Note 4009. This is an original pressing that is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. I was wondering about the kid in the picture on the cover and went to pull out my copy to see if there was mention in the liner notes but, alas, I do not have an original copy of The Scene Changes, much to my chagrin. This one is already at more than $300 with more than a day to go, so this will not be the copy that fills the hole in my collection.

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG for the cover. It has many days to go, is more than $500 at this point, and has not yet met the seller’s reserve price. Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal, Prestige 7068. This one is closing today. The record looks to be in VG++ condition, while the cover is VG.The price is about $230. Hmmmm. Not bad. I kind of like that the cover is not perfect. This would fill a gap. I had both of these Jackie records at one time, but sold them.
The post Focusing on Some Gaps in the Collection first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

This one sold for $648.80. I remember once having a duplicate of this record and offering it to a dealer, who offered me $35 for the copy and was insulted when I refused to sell it to him. That was pre-eBay, of course.

The other nice Prestige we were watching wound up not selling: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. This was an original New York pressing in at least VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The top bid was $477, which failed to meet the dealer’s reserve price.

This one broke into the $1,000 bin, again: Lee Morgan, Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing and it was listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,358.77. Also entering the $1,000 bin, again, was:

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad lib 6601. This was in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover and it sold for $1,810.20.
The post Jazz Vinyl Today: 2 Prestiges, 2 For the $1,000 Bin first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Jackie is back: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This one is from a reputable seller and is listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. VG+ is always a risk, but this one is play-graded and sounds like it is in pretty good shape. The bidding has already topped $1,000 on its way to . . . . we’ll see. Also on eBay now is one of my favorites, Jackie McLean, Swing, Swang, Swingin’, Blue Note 4024. This looks to be an original pressing with the West 63rd address, deep grooves, RVG, ear. It is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. Start price is $650 and, with a day to go, there are no takers so far. For a high start price like that, I think most buyers would appreciate pictures of the labels, for what it’s worth, although I’d be OK bidding on this record if I was inclined to pay that high a price for it in any condition, which I’m not.

This one is tempting:

Howard McGhee, Volume 2, Blue Note 5024. This is an original Lexington Avenue 10-inch LP, featuring both Horace Silver and Tal Farlow, two of my all-timers. I happen to have a mint copy of this record with no cover, so the idea of getting a nice cover is very appealing. The vinyl on this one is VG+ and the cover is listed as VG+ to VG++. It is currently at about $150 with a few hours to go.

This one is tempting as well: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. This is the one with John Coltrane and Hank Mobley. It is an original pressing listed in VG++ to M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. This one is hard to find and the price isn’t that high yet — about $225 with two days to go. The problem: It has a reserve price and the reserve price has not yet been met. Is there any way of knowing what a seller’s reserve price is, other than just asking him directly?
The post Jazz Vinyl: Jackie-ing, Hope and McGhee first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are some recent jazz vinyl sales that we somehow missed. This one is among the rarest of the rare and collectors seem to covet it regardless of condition: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This one was in VG condition for the vinyl and VG- for the cover. It sold for $688.

Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. This was an original pressing with the New York address. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG++ as well. The price was $665. I remember this as one of the few collectibles for which I paid top-dollar at Dayton’s back in the early 1980s. In those days, top dollar for this was about $80, and psychologically, that was a tough hump to get over for me, but I spent it. Then, I wound up selling it a few years later for about $200 and my copy now is a Japanese pressing.

I would have thought this next one would have fetched a lot more money, but the listing was a little confusing and the condition of the cover wasn’t described:

Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1543. This looked to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing and it has the cover by Andy Warhol. With Warhol covers, it’s important to talk about the condition. This is the last of the Blue Notes with the Lexington Avenue address, right? The record looked to be in VG++ condition based on the description. The price was $565.55. Not bad.

Here’s an update on some of the jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay:

Let’s start with the $1,000 bin, this one from last week: Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,675. Hmm, in the Jazz Collector Price Guide we’ve had four or five of these sell for more than $3,000. What’s going on? Is there something in the listing that would indicate this is not an original pressing? Looks good to me. I know the listing would have been enhanced by more and better pictures, but still. . .

As we saw last week, prices for certain records with Andy Warhol covers seem to be rising. Here’s an example: Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1543. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing — the last original Lexington Avenue, right? — and the record was VG but the cover was VG+. It sold for $833. That’s the highest we’ve seen in the Jazz Collector Price Guide for any Burrell record.

Here’s one that provides an answer to a question we posed the other day:

How much would you pay for one of the rarest of all jazz records in G condition for the vinyl and VG for the cover? The answer is $332 and the record is Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601.

We’ll close this morning with another one that was a bit of a surprise: Hank Mobley, High Voltage, Blue Note 4273. This was an original pressing, but it was an original Liberty, and those haven’t been nearly as collectible as the pre-Liberty Blue Notes. This one was in VG+ or so condition and sold for $156.49. It was a promo copy, so perhaps that had something to do with it?
The post More Jazz Vinyl Updates and A Couple of Surprises first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I’m looking forward to the day, coming soon, when my real work slows down and I will be able to post more items and more thoughtful items on Jazz Collector. In the meantime, I will keep updating some of the records we like to watch on eBay and keep an eye out for interesting items as well. For today:

What’s a VG-minus version of this record worth: Jackie McLean, the New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601? We’ll find out later today. This one is just a little bit more than $200 and is a little tempting, to be honest, based on the seller’s description that it sounds decent. I had a VG copy of this I sold years ago for $500 and have always regretted it, and I’d love to get another copy for the collection. Probably not this one, but I’ll keep looking.

Here’s a nice original Blue Note: Horace Silver with Art Blakey and Sabu, Blue Note 1520. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing in M- condition. I don’t normally think of the Horace Silvers an the same league — value-wise — as some of the other Blue Notes, but this one is already more than $600.

This one is on the verge of breaking the $1,000 barrier but has still no reached the seller’s reserve price: Lee Morgan Volume 3, Blue Note 1557. This looks to be an original first press in M- condition. The current price is $987 with a couple of days to go.

Here’s another 10-inch beauty of a record that sold for more than $500 this week: Clifford Brown, New Star on the Horizon, Blue Note 5032. This one is in VG++ condition for the vinyl and the cover and is close to $200. I want to go back in time and go to a record store in 1955 when this record was new and buy a whole batch of clean 10-inch LPs and bring them back with me to now and play them on my current stereo equipment. Hey, it’s the holiday season, we can all make a wish even if it can’t come true.
The post Jazz Vinyl on eBay: Ad Lib & a Few Blue Notes first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
