The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The final price was $1,610. Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This looked to be an original promo copy with the New York 23 label. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was listed as VG, but the pictures tell a different story for the cover. VG minus would be a stretch. Despite the cover, the record sold for $969.

As for those Blue Notes we were watching on our last post: Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was an original review pressing in VG++ condition. The final price was $846. Fred Jackson, Hootin’ ‘N Tootin’, Blue Note 4094. This looked to be an original New York USA pressing, with the record in VG condition and the cover in VG+. The start price was $700 and there were no bidders. The record is back on eBay with the $700 as a buy-it-now price. Donald Byrd, Byrd in Flight, Blue Note 4048. This was an original pressing listed in Ex condition for the record and VG for the cover. The start price was about $900 and there were no bidders. It is now back on eBay with a start price of $650. There are no bids, again, and the auction closes later today.
The post Catching Up on Rare Jazz Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The start price is about $900 with eight days left on the auction. According to Popsike, there have been about 10 instances of this record in the $1,000 bin. We’ll see what happens with this VG cover. Another Blue Note: Fred Jackson, Hootin’ ‘N Tootin’, Blue Note 4094. This looks to be an original New York USA pressing, despite what the listing says. The record is listed as VG and the cover as VG+. The start price is $700 and so far there are no bidders, with the auction closing next week. High expectations for both sellers, IMHO, but we’ll see.

Staying with Blue Notes for a change 🙂 Art Taylor: AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was an original deep grow West 63rd Street pressing, review copy in VG++ condition. When we wrote about this a few days ago (Book’s Book, Cattin’ and Some Arts), the bidding was at $83. The final price was $877.
The post Blue Note Sunday first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Just a quiet week, I suppose. We can start with a couple of Prestiges: Booker Ervin, The Song Book, Prestige 7318. This is a personal favorite of mine, Booker playing all standards and playing them quite well. This is an original yellow label pressing. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The start price is $200, the auction closes in seven days, and so far there are no bids. You can buy it now for $260. This record has sold for more than $300 several times in the past, although I would presume in better condition. This is another Prestige, sort of: Cattin’ With John Coltrane and Paul Quinichette, Esquire 32-101. This looks to be an original U.K. pressing, probably in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. More than three days left on the auction and so far no bids at about $180.
Here’s one that actually has bids: Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This looks to be an original deep-groove West 63rd Street pressing, review copy. The record and cover are both listed in VG++ condition. Bidding is at just $83, but there are more than four days left on the auction. Here’s one more we were watching last week: The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West JWLP-10. This was an original pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. The final price was $533.78.
The post Book’s Book, Cattin’ and Some Arts first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are some high-end items from the seller 1molecularrman, starting with Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. This was an original New York yellow label listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $2,175. I didn’t recall ever seeing a higher price for this record, but I don’t watch eBay every day the way I used to. Checking with Popsike . . . . yes, this is the highest price ever recorded for For Lady.

From the same seller there was Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This was an original pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The final price was $4,412. And one more: Paul Quinichette, On the Sunny Side, Prestige 7103. This was an original New York yellow label listed in VG++ condition for the record and the cover, although the description of the record sounded more like VG+ to me. The final price was $745. That was the second highest price recorded for this record, the highest being $875.

Here are a few more to stick into the $1,000 bin. Geez, what a startling coincidence: They are all Blue Notes, starting with Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $1,194.

Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was also an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was listed as VG+ and the cover was Ex. The final price was $1,613.

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with the deep groove Side 2. The record and cover were listed in VG+ condition. The final price was $3,450.

Freddie Hubbard, Hub Cap, Blue Note 4073. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $1,425.

One of these days, something will happen, but I don’t know when and I can’t imagine I’ll go the Lennib route, at least for as long as I can put Coltrane on the turntable and know that it’s Coltrane that I’ve put on the turntable. In any case, I am watching jazz vinyl with renewed interest and ready to do my normal work here of writing about what I’m watching and, on occasion, writing about what I’m listening to and, on rarer and rarer occasions, what I’m buying. So, let’s start with Red Rodney, Signal 1206. This looks to be an original pressing, listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG- for the cover. Quite a rhythm section on this record with Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Pettiford and Philly Joe Jones. Question: Can anyone think of another record with that rhythm section. Off the top of my head, I can’t. So we have the record VG+ and the cover VG- and a final price of $1,324. Hmm.

Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the jacket was Ex, with the further explanation that the “Back side is white!” Not sure what the other optional colors may have been on the palette, but I’m sure a white backside contributed to the final price of $1,613.

Dexter Gordon, Daddy Plays the Horn, London Records LTZ-N 15098. This was an original UK mono pressing listed in EX+ for the record and EX for the cover. The final price was $293. From the same seller: Dexter Blows Hot and Cool, Ducretet-Thomson 300 V 026. This looks to be an original French pressing, listed in EX condition for the record and the cover. This one sold for $535.

And one more for the record: Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was maybe VG or VG+, depending upon how you feel about paying more than $2,000 for a record that has, as the seller described, “light noise (hiss, crackle and occasional pop).” The cover was VG+. The final price was $2,475.

As I’ve been perusing eBay since my return from vacation, I’ve been randomly filling my watch list with items to write about for Jazz Collector. And as I’ve been doing that, I am finding that most of the records I’m saving this week have a common seller, which would be Carolina Soul. I’m a little bit in awe, and a little bit in envy, of the huge collection of Blue Notes, Prestiges and others they have up for auction this week. Not sure if the awe/envy is about the money that will be coming their way in just one week’s worth of auctions, or if it’s the fact that they seem to have a virtually endless supply of interesting/collectible jazz records. Anyway, here are some of the items in my queue, starting with Thad Jones, After Hours With the Prestige All-Stars, Prestige 7118. This one caught my eye because of the cover: I have a copy of this record with the New York yellow label and a different cover. My cover has a generic picture of a city nightscape. This cover, as you see, has a picture of Thad and (I think) Frank Wess. With Prestige it’s challenging to figure out which cover came out first and why they would change it so quickly after the initial release of the record. If I were to guess, I would say the cover I have would be the first cover, but that is just a guess. The reason is that the orange cover has The Prestige All-Starts underlined and that strikes me as an idea that a marketing person would come up with as a way to boost sales by making a slight adjustment to an existing product. In my real job, I spend way too much time talking to marketing people, so I could be completely wrong. Rudolf will know for sure which was first, as will others out there in Jazz Collector World. Anyway, this copy is probably in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. Bidding is in the $125 range, with four days left on the auction.

Here are a few more:

Art Taylor, Taylor’s Tenors, New Jazz 8219. This is an original purple label deep groove pressing. The record and cover are in VG condition and the bidding is at about $100.

Bill Evans Trio, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, Riverside 9376. This is an original black label stereo pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and cover. There are 94 bids on this record by 14 bidders. As of this writing, the bidding is at $400.

Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um, Columbia 1370. This is an original white label, six-eye promo copy listed in VG+ condition for the record and cover. Bidding is in the $275 range.

Donald Byrd-Gigi Gryce, Jazz Lab, Columbia 988. This is another white label, six-eye promo copy. Condition is VG++ for the record and cover. Bidding is in the $130 range. I had never recognized this record as being highly collectible, so I’m wondering if it is the allure of the promo copy or just the fact that it’s great music, a great record and right in the wheelhouse of the era as far as the artists and the style of music.

The Magnificent Thad Jones, Blue Note 1527. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG Condition for the record and VG- for the cover. Bidding is in the $430 range.
