My wife, known to many of you as The Lovely Mrs. JC, had a retinal detachment in August and has since been through three surgeries and two laser procedures. We’ve been driving back and forth between New York and The Berkshires almost every week. Fingers crossed that the third surgery was the charm. In the meantime, I’m thankful I’ve been able to continue doing my radio show on WTBR-FM Pittsfield, which are also the podcasts that appear on the Jazz Collector web site. I have never done anything like this before and it’s giving me a lot of enjoyment. Plus it’s getting me back into the music, even more than the records, which, IMHO, is always a good thing. But there are still records out there and, I assume eBay is still in business, so I will swing over there now and do my first search in well over a month. And what do I find?<span id="more-9325"></span></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Let’s do this in real time. So far, I’m finding a lot of records with really high start prices and zero bids, starting with: <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/166468837131?hash=item26c250df0b%3Ag%3AU9sAAOSwf4hlYRHN&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0HwBv2tf8gxJvNDEchteeoFUoAWLXWJ%2FhOq5AJbcG7YV4avIhS1wa7nyFl93ElkhTMBOxw5TiQq9kv7OkedXQVWXIQS8o7t9PyMtSmFDFtjdqShxxEpfMclGVFlKOzY200Nyug0qKTmzoxJYbOOjeW7zJcyY7Wo9xEVxhq9OO%2FEVN8uaIF2NE%2F3yfvQJk2k4gAAjLlf%2BctkqUxDgRrKJKi30uPtnK4mOKDDN6EpXjsyIuMTtWnLRpHkbc%2Bqk3uXxq04nqGYo10hjb0VpavCYEDY%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-Cf9NGDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Miles Davis Volume 2, Blue Note 1502</a>, </strong>original Lexington Avenue pressing. Great looking cover, as you can see. Record and cover are graded in Excellent condition, which the seller describes as “VERY” nice, although not quite mint minus. Start price is close to $1,900 and the buy it now price is close to $2,900.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">How about <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/266537354509?hash=item3e0edd450d%3Ag%3Aa8IAAOSwN1NlAOgI&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8Kk3cH%2BL6x1DJkmoCuGqwcc1oTBXgMfk9AnGczNpkcoCLN9YKcUB2hBaHN2gJb9agZEQ8wBpAbbjhF47j8BjkLTS6E%2FKP%2F1hbK8QcDDELAy2%2FTKSbMpIRFqZxdhMsV5eJDtt8jnVTOOX5vdRbhPHYaIDo7C0%2B6YaXnCp9Vv6r2FUdVg372VoB71RoguGvxf%2BPqc6YuQUzZcurapodVpkgQ%2BEb3FgYdFs%2BHSlAoIudLHMYtV0Vumxk8CbF%2BN%2B1ecnQxndGODFc%2FaXH%2BnI5qtDDzgYDQh0LkLQOIPFzY9%2Bf7mESyXx2M4z1Fz6yG4MWhrt%2Fg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-Cf9NGDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Gil Melle, Gil’s Guests, Prestige 7063</a></strong>? This is an original New York yellow label listed in VG+ condition for the record and what I would call an “iffy” VG cover. How about $900 to start? And here’s a record I once owned but traded away in a very bad deal for me: <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/115991681083?hash=item1b01a4983b%3Ag%3A1wYAAOSwk6JlNMIT&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwBpAR4lkroM%2BMg7Fk%2BJxLMTLvSZL5clcQhhQZVqBXrzEHk6DofWKfB9SHR5kF1uQEkl94putfN3sK1qpxBzBwYR1IyDAe2Sr0vOykNRLXS9eB%2Bn9s9nau%2FPSejIomGOEiSBTRuxKzwl9VIjyB%2Fc223arbqsbouJwfnGF0MbND5ym%2B4usAZ%2FFwsvktGSGzXd4aXnH%2BcYPhCG8Z42nMzgAj1biK2d3yvqsoPEcMlZcX%2BL24fPORiEyq%2FHUPdYxXNnwvA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-Cf9NGDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Sonny Red, Out of the Blue Note 4032</a>.</strong> The record and cover are graded VG+, with some surface noise on the vinyl. The start price is about $800.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Doing this in real time, I have completed the first page of 60 listings of jazz records sorted by highest prices on eBay. I kid you not – there is not a single record that has even one bid. <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/126199983995?hash=item1d621aef7b%3Ag%3AKfsAAOSws8xkhd8t&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0DyHWkMATLjDBiDo7IacEt4%2F1H2K6kI3aCXiJNxPUvxu9VWgZAIiCxFXWY7kU1IS%2Bi8IlGAgKH0NEaGKEJGyYMw%2Fn%2Bainst6XO2G0XjnO3TbULk6RBe9Rp1jD4EEIzMlDJcIS8Si1VYvi7d1QaeoxaLXF333GWFLS7d0rrOnCFNBDc02f3dLjibM6HKCl4v79o8SfY1lsV4O48dPTwDuoHXyZBDZHlceSPJqBZKXZb3Yi0Fhw5SO3X0PPb6GThj809YEs2n3qLo6xQPwmsK8yIA%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR96f9NGDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Astrud Gilberto, The Shadow of Your Smile, $2,000</a></strong>. No? <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/145463482718?hash=item21de4c995e%3Ag%3As7wAAOSwr8JlGiyN&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4Bh1QRBjj03TyV2CJyrxEk4adk1jugBWI9spiEe5daWivtB8XfslUBO7o%2BPvXB%2BH4bvYpQ35hHB5svaqsFUaRyafIdgQUg7ap1x1nRuo7kN2N9GGZy%2B%2BgP364GEJGZSm%2Fuk1qHABqUojsagi%2FzF4T8ZGkiS8BmDeLuPrJrCb4pCLbFkoMk6Dbte4jNU%2FH9WmafaSQt36T9volkBlyxX%2BS5vKbroRYotkBPbZIOEhKBoW8IWhXZLb0OrhRhytoWi%2FWaQfVksM4GHMlT1cqj32XdMSy2fT%2F9KOvC5Se8SLrDyL%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-Sf9NGDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely</a></strong>, $400. No?</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">To be fair, there are some records that will likely be sold and perhaps well into the $1,000 bin. I’m looking at <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/134832636943?hash=item1f64a6c40f%3Ag%3ALyAAAOSwwlRlXljj&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwPKwdiwnESBaSZf6grP7I2Wuj9xz1RkdvDvT%2F1l0cZ2RQeUuzN3Q1JSo%2FU2R%2FaD%2BGpUeLGHQN3nZ26iG49eS6FdLN7wHeyPVhSr1YBcsjAgSlQDnhmY3YtU6%2BlEyh0EPJfrWnjuzwpadKBYvDUsap81fqaVqICBn1VC9jKm%2FTLxhDKWtHwDWL%2FZRz%2BJ8uEG1ESP3CbUnQFMvNcV7UCVu9czJGx2BYo1EkRTHdCrY3iNf2SlLtNt7MBiLp%2FO0Q06FgA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-Kf9NGDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Freddie Hubbard Hub Cap, Blue Note 4073</a></strong>, and . . . . not much more. Let’s move on to page 2. I’m determined to find a record that has at least one bid.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Nothing yet. <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/115991366460?hash=item1b019fcb3c%3Ag%3ADxkAAOSwZcFlD1C5&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwAxB9nUcw2phFAxXQ488s%2B8bZoYUrCmyrPqxn9XGkeZdGZjDTTsrs1WWa2Goqjiqibx%2FpiZFkQ%2FsVwHUn4kPnebiOPO4wJL6kr%2Bu9ijaV3XzUfzuC%2FA7QZmmvEgcrqc2HadsiYoUySOHjBb5UTIF8hpJ4JaCwndvtvTnpE9etnb5j74dxEMRvMz3DkNWcMoJeCEIhqZZ5begjdJuPWoPFHH5VplYCAv1RlkufuAR3p74viqcoKfu%2Bnrp849GO27f6w%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR47c-NKDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Passing Chet Baker, It Could Happen to You</a>, <a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/296066955621?hash=item44eef73965%3Ag%3AXSUAAOSw8iNlYCP-&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4Kp1zOq1y4zSzyrgWWqbU7IhKxUWr5qvhSZGOt%2BSw431cAPADvdRUpU8OZUUM7K%2BbA9WkPjtdVwF4JnI4%2BE4IkIp4MNDF4l%2FbbswN%2BjCGzMEpkkDYuG%2F7P60EwG4Zng9WcpkI1a%2BfyPKuN3htEgLSIozDHeB541%2BrrqK45i9VQcHyyiMihe2f6pXDpRhWpVO7tZ%2Fp9LsotHVHSWDuXtw4jmZ3N2rKGmDUYD8rmRC0kkUEFHlIQ0kx8FEnbYkRWzrUcaPTl5n6lnRMmWIMpuJhgpie8dU%2B7rJvN1Ob7OIQzcr%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5Dc-NKDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Sonny Rollins, Rollins Plays For Bird</a></strong>, both in the $300 range, passing <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/155903855093?hash=item244c9809f5%3Ag%3Aw0wAAOSwEGpkvsV-&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4Ht5wCDlaboutLT8WkRUxuWk9FAM36jbrwoV3J2%2Fmd8Z9gwLGm1NmwBp2%2FCC2ROON%2BusccaNpBzj49OzZMhE23jMnIO%2BAPn%2BVxS%2FxR6JKe4xsx%2FLiOuFDIjNCTp2HIhWyUJM%2FitQ6MbGz%2Fpp%2BMmxc%2FgbkhRsy4QROBC5AYk5nbDk3Nk2SHgrG92mG%2FW0a%2Fyw2vzuBFluaCHOtdr7Z7QwNfHsSvLym6nj%2FTeH%2FwSIK0JKfHEZIfRWCVvgyV4%2B0vvx16ob17oUUEU2jmnwfPHf5DG4dCH%2Fh7S6KcT9iqpurXJy%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5Dc-NKDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Freddie Redd, The Connection</a></strong> at $250, <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/186183102701?hash=item2b5960b0ed%3Ag%3AlTwAAOSw6LtlQt4v&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwEIcDEUVu5Z0ry08Qi7nak8uJJVRh2SO%2BlsPD7hvfD2CAXBrB9ZX7a%2B0%2FEULTKx%2BZIfrHwGMefP%2BIqbvpEWIWbve1bAkIxhHTCrXRkwGM7ASdtiGI4prt74W0NchhO9EFD3VDCCERdvDnp1I81Qo1C%2B%2F4uShmOL%2F%2BUppV1%2BWB12%2F7GzJbI6lZ8x2HzWYNGIwjgWxqFt4GXK3TUU0g0udlO%2BY5QVOkk4V2dZQjkYQIbM85%2BwCHayU9FjEFuRclYdusA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5Lc-NKDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Miles Davis, Relaxin’</a></strong> at $250. OK. Now I’m starting to worry that something is wrong with my internet connection or eBay. Nothing? Let’s keep going.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Ding, ding, ding. Nearly 100 records down, our first record that has any bids, and, I must admit, it’s a good one: <strong><a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/134824143669?hash=item1f64252b35%3Ag%3AVR8AAOSwyHxlWZx4&amp;amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4F9TZqDZt%2FCI4NJv7JjP0iferjkLlrBu0%2FLDRmfkdcdUuK7%2FyFeiUQL7SpmzKUdfEuv9gv7ReWDYbyiVngSLTN3IrZAZLYUFbgANys2C43I76r9B8XZBWYwRiFmo9SmnAvQjf%2BaHiLzW63gO7Wwj%2BI13aiY2IjzmOmuA2uVSw%2Bo1ygwywP13MwKxu6x%2BbJyosv%2Bm2edp6atHry2%2BZ1GMZOhvz%2BvUpLht%2BK1WUgy9HRiBlhtEv%2BW0n0DtbtLOYOoxGXWpIhUU6it5RIqjRWHftlXVs4jhS92fCQg4oR8u5bd6%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5Tc-NKDYw&amp;LH_Auction=1">Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565</a>.</strong> This looks to be an original pressing with the New York 23 labels. The record is graded M- and the cover is graded EX. There are actually 10 bids and the price is currently at about $230 with less than two days left on the auction.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Well, that was fun. Clearly, my absence from posting, has had a dramatic impact on the market.</p>
