Oh, yes, eBay. Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing from the Jazz Record Center, part of a nice auction that closed last week. Based on the description I would count this as M- for both the record and the cover. The final price was $2,275. Before eBay was around to show us what the market really looks like, I used to think that True Blue was the ultimate Blue Note collectible, and for a while that did seem to be the case. But it has since been surpassed in desirability — and price — but at least a couple of other records, to wit: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This was an original pressing with the New York 23 label on side two, which makes it uber-original in the eyes of many collectors. Perhaps of equal excitement, this was a promo copy. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was listed as EX+. The final price was $7,970, which may be a record for any jazz record, depending upon how you view these things. Quite incredible, don’t you agree.

Here are a few others from the Jazz Record Center auction:

Clifford Brown Memorial Album, Blue Note 1526. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. My grading would put this at M- for both the record and the cover, based on the description, because JRC doesn’t use our standard grading language. This one sold for $700.

“Baby Face” Willette, Face to Face, Blue Note 4068. This was a West 63rd Street pressing without the deep groove. It was probably in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover, depending upon how you feel about the previous owner writing her name in ink on the back — in three different places. Huh? Anyway, this record sold for $560, which is not making a lot of sense to me. Perhaps someone out there in Jazz Collector world has a reasonable explanation.

Herbie Hancock, Takin’ Off, Blue Note 4109. This was an original New York USA pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It had the added benefit of Hancock’s autograph, if you consider that to be a benefit. It sold for $710.

Grant Green, Grant’s First Stand, Blue Note 4064. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and the cover. The final price was $710.

Here’s a Blue Note you don’t see too often: Harold Vick, Steppin’ Out, Blue Note 4138. This was an original New York USA pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $373.

Someone on the Reader Forum was looking for Booker Ervin records. Could you go wrong with this one? Booker Ervin, Groovin’ High, Prestige 7417. There wasn’t much description in the listing, but there was just one bidder and the price was $9.99. This won’t make the price guide, but it probably made one collector quite happy.

The price on this also seemed a bit low: Lee Konitz, Prestige 7004. This was an original New York yellow label in VG+ condition for he record and the cover. It sold for $87.59.

Here’s a few more Blue Notes:

Baby Face Willette, Face to Face, Blue Note 4068. This was a New York USA pressing — original? — that was in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $151.30.

Duke Jordan, A Flight To Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was somewhere between VG+ and VG++. The price was $438.

Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. The price was $461.
The post Catching Up: More Blue Notes & Prestiges first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

We’ve been quite busy updating the Jazz Collector Price Guide, so we will do a few posts over the next few days highlighting some of the new entries, starting with some Blue Notes, of course. There are no links to these, FYI.

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and just one side deep groove. The record was listed in VG+ condition for both the vinyl and the cover and it sold for $285.

Baby Face Willette, Stop and Listen, Blue Note 4084. This was an original pressing with the NY USA label. the record looked to be in VG++ condition for both the vinyl and the cover. It sold for $200.

This one sold for a big price, but it didn’t seem to be an original pressing:

Eric Dolphy, Out To Lunch, Blue Note 4163. This was a mono pressing with the NY USA label, which would make it original, except it had one side deep groove and one side no deep groove, so perhaps it was not a first press. No matter, it was a beautiful pristine copy and it sold for $554.

Hank Mobley and His All Stars, Blue Note 1544. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The vinyl was M- and the cover was just VG. The price was $482.

Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. Actually, the cover was listed as VG++, but the picture clearly showed it as VG+ and the price more accurately reflected the VG+ cover. The price was $154.99.

Introducing Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1523. This was an original Lexingon Avenue pressing. The vinyl was VG+ and the cover was VG. The price was $308. Also from the same artist: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 1, Blue Note 1596. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing and of course it has the cover design by Andy Warhol. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $382.

Dizzy Reece, Blues in Trinity, Blue Note 4006. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cover were both listed as M- The price was $646.59.

John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. It was listed as M- for both the vinyl and the cover. It sold for $888.

That’s it for now. I’ll be doing a few more posts on recent prices, so stay tuned.
The post For the Price Guide: A Blue Note Bonanza first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
