John Coltrane, Coltrane, Impulse 21. This was a mono pressing with the white label promo label. It was listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It wound up selling for $493.88. Wow. From the same seller was this: John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Impulse 40. This was also a white label promo copy, also in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. This one sold for $282. Then there were the two on Prestige: George Wallington, Jazz For the Carriage Trade, Prestige 7032. This was an original New York yellow-label pressing with the “Not for Sale” stamps on the label and cover. It was listed in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. The start price was $499 and it did not sell. Somewhat surprising, right? Then there was:

Barbara Lea with the Johnny Windhurst Quartet, Prestige 7065. This was also an original New York yellow label pressing with the “Nor for Sale” stickers. It was listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The start price was $299 and that was exactly what it sold for with a single bidder.

Here are a few more odds and ends to share:

Our friend CeeDee sent me a note under the subject: “From the ‘I’ll see it when I believe it” department.” It was this link to Somethin’ Else, the Blue Note book by Ashley Kahn that has been in the works for several years. The note further states: “Ships on Jan. 30, it says here.” So, apparently, the long-awaited book will be available by the end of this week. I’ll see if I can get a review copy to cover here at Jazz Collector.

Here’s a very interesting read from Politico, excerpted from a book called “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs,” by Johann Hari: “The Hunting of Billie Holiday: How Lady Day found herself in the middle of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics’ early fight for survival.” Take a few minutes to read this. It’s quite chilling.

Finally, I got a chance yesterday to see the Clark Terry documentary, “Keep on Keepin’ On.” I will write more about this in a subsequent post. Until then, whatever you do, make it your business to see this movie. If you’re a regular here at this site you will absolutely love this movie. I promise.

Barbara Lea with the Johnny Windhurst Quartet, Prestige 7065. This is an original New York yellow label pressing with a “Not for Sale” stamp on the back. I’ve never actually owned or even heard this record and I have no idea who Johnny Windhurst was, but it is, of course, a record I would love to have, it being an original Prestige and all. This copy is in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover and it looks quite nice overall. The start price is in the $300 range and that is already too steep for me.

George Wallington, Jazz For the Carriage Trade, Prestige 7032. This is also an original New York yellow label pressing with a “Not for Sale” stamp on the back as well as on the labels. The record is in M- condition and the cover seems to be VG++. The start price is in the $500 and there are no bidders with four days left in the auction. Perhaps I am wrong

in assuming that these “Not for Sale” records are promo copies and perhaps they are just cut-outs or records that were taken out of commission. Careful readers will recall that Rudolf once told a great story of going to the Prestige warehouse and walking away with hundreds of original pressings that had been otherwise targeted for the trash heap (Guest Column: Treasure Hunt — Prestige). Perhaps these are just cut-outs without the cut-out holes? I like to think of them as promo copies, as I’m sure the sellers do as well, along with anyone who buys them.

This one we know is a real promo copy because it has the infamous WLP designation: John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Impulse 40. This is also being sold by Euclid records. The vinyl is in VG++ condition and the cover is listed at VG+. The price is more than $250 and the auction is closing soon, and perhaps it will be closed by the time many of you read this.

Here are the results of a few more jazz vinyl auctions we’ve been watching on eBay, all involving the Prestige label:

Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. This was an original New York yellow label pressing that looked to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. Always liked this record, featuring Mal Waldron and Paul Quinichette in addition to Young. This one did not sell. It had a top bid of $510 but failed to meet the seller’s reserve price.

This was from a different seller but also did not sell: Jackie McLean, Lights Out, Prestige 7035. This was an original New York pressing in what was described as pristine M- condition. The top bid was around $620, but that was lower than the reserve price. I’m surprised this one didn’t get a higher bid, and I’m sure the seller was too, but, to be fair, the seller’s feedback rating is less than 99 percent, which probably impacted the bidding.

Barbara Lea, Lea In Love, Prestige 7100. This was an original New York pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. It sold for $385. This seller often has great records and has a strong reputation. I wonder why they vary their terminology between the Goldmine M-, VG+, VG, etc., and the E+, E, E-? Perhaps if they read Jazz Collector they will provide an answer.

George Wallington, The New York Scene, New Jazz 8207. This was an original pressing with the deep grooves and purple label. The seller also used the E+/E grading system, which I interpret to be M- for this record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $495. I have this record and I actually paid 25 cents for it. Somehow it found it’s way into a discard bin at a local record store about 20 years ago and I fished it out. It was in beautiful condition. Someone either made a mistake or had no idea what he was doing. Needless to say, I was quite pleased.

Here’s some of the records we’re watching, starting with: Introducing Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1523. This looks to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG+ condition,. The start price is around $250 and so far there are no bidders. You’d think there would be bidding for an original Lexington Avenue pressing at $250: Perhaps it’s condition. The seller mentions “minimal light surface noise” and states “No Skips!” with an exclamation point. I think it’s the NO SKIPS PLUS EXCLAMATION POINT that would have me worried as a bidder. The least you’d expect out of a VG+ record is no skips, right? This one is from the same seller, also has the NO SKIPS! in the listing and also has no bidders: Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. This one is listed as VG+++ condition for the vinyl and G for the cover. The start price is around $650.

Atomic Records has some nice vinyl on eBay this week, including:

Barbara Lea, Lea In Love, Prestige 7100. This is an original New York pressing. The vinyl is M- and the cover is VG++. The bidding has reached about $110 so far, but it has yet to exceed the seller’s reserve price. This is one I’ve never seen: Helen Carr, Why Do I Love You, Bethlehem 45. This is an original pressing, DJ copy, in what looks to be VG++ condition for the record and probably comparable condition for the cover. The bidding is in the low $100 range and has not yet reached the seller’s reserve price. Look at that 1950s cover, some wacky combination of From Here to Eternity and True Confessions. Perhaps the label was trying to make a connection between Helen CARR and Deborah KERR?

Here’s an update on some of the items we’ve been watching lately on eBay:

Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean, Inta Somethin’, Pacific Jazz 41. This was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition. We had targeted this is a potential bargain. It sold for $71. What do you think? Definitely a very nice record.

I have a feeling this one also may have been a bargain: Eric Dolphy, Out There, Prestige New Jazz 8252. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition. Price. $103.51

Charles Mingus at the Bohemia, Debut 123. This was an original pressing in M-/VG+ condition. We expected it to go for a high price and it did, also beating the dealer’s reserve. Price: $460

Then there were the two Tal Farlow LPs on Norgran: The Interpretations of Tal Farlow, Norgran 1027. This was an original yellow-label pressing with a nice cover by David Stone Martin. Price: $150 The Artistry of Tal Farlow, Norgran 1014. This was an original yellow-label pressing in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $151.40. If you haven’t read it yet, we recommend the post on Tal from our friend, and Tal’s, Dan Axelrod. You can view it here.

Lee Morgan, Indeed!, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that seemed to be in VG++/VG+ condition. Price $898

Barbara Lea, Lea In Love, Prestige 7100. This was an original New York pressing in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $229

I guess our mention didn’t help to generate any interest in Sal Salvador records, even this one with Phil Woods and Eddie Costa, Shades of Sal, Bethlehem 39. It had a start price of $49.99 and didn’t sell.

Dave Bailey, Reaching Out, Jazztime 003. This was an original pressing in VG+/VG+ condition. Price: $348

Sonny Rollins, Tour De Force, Prestige 7126. This was an original New York pressing in VG++/VG++ condition. Price: $162.66. Did you happen to catch our birthday tribute to Sonny a couple of weeks ago.

While the past two days have been light on eBay, today is fairly loaded with interesting items. Here are a few to keep an eye on:

We’ll start with some nice jazz guitar records. Atomic Records has a pair of nice Tal Farlow records on Norgran: The Artistry of Tal Farlow, Norgran 1014. This is in nice shape and in the $100 range as of this post. Also, Interpretations, Norgran 1027. This seems to be in a bit better condition and is in the same price range. My good friend Dan Axelrod is loaded with personal anecdotes about Tal, and at some point I’m going to prevail upon him to share them on this site. Dan, are you out there?

The seller 59Whitefalcon, who often sells nice jazz guitar LPs on eBay, is on today with a bunch of Sal Salvador records, including my personal favorite, which is: Shades of Sal Salvador, Bethlehem 39. This one features Phil Woods and Eddie Costa and is being offered at a start price of around $50. After you click it, you can view seller’s other items to check out the other Sal Salvador records. Back to Dan, I know there’s a very funny story involving Tal and Jimmy Raney and Sal Salvador. So, Dan, anytime you’re ready.

A day without a collectible Blue Note on eBay would be like a day without sunshine, so no sense depriving us of the pleasure. How about: Lee Morgan, Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing in very nice condition. This is already near $750.

And here, in no particular order, are a bunch of others:

Barbara Lea, Lea in Love, Prestige 7100. This is a New York pressing in nice shape.

Horace Silver Quintet, Blue Note 5058. This is a 10-inch LP in VG condition. Seller has a start price of $299. Somehow I think it’s not going to sell.

Lockjaw Davis and Johnny Griffin, Lookin’ At Monk, Jazzland 39. What’s this doing here? It’s not a real collectible. Perhaps not, but not every collectible is a good record, and not every good record is a collectible and this is a darn good record, fantastic music and well recorded. It has no bids and it’s $8, so, at this point, it’s not much risk.

Here’s another one that fits the same mold, nice record, reasonable price: Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean, Inta Somethin’, Pacific Jazz 41. This one is also under $10 at this point.

Finally, here’s one you don’t see too often: Charles Mingus at the Bohemia, Debut 123. This looks to be in nice shape. We’ll see if it meets the dealer’s reserve price.
The post Another Day on EBAY first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
