Maybe VG for the cover. I know the seller and he is very reputable. The auction closes in about three days and the start price is about $450 with no bidders yet. Another of my favorites from this seller Benny Golson Sextet, The Modern Touch, Riverside 256. This looks to be an original pressing with the blue label and small logo. The record and cover are both in M- condition. This one also closes in about three days, with a start price of about $250 and no bidders . . . yet. Both of these records will sell, if not to anyone else then perhaps to me. Yes, I have copies. But the M- Golson is a strong upgrade for one of my top records. Love the arrangements and all the playing, especially an impeccable Kenny Dorham.

Since I’m focused on my favorite records today, we will close with Horace Silver, Blowin’ the Blues Away, Blue Note 4017. This is an original West 63rd Street deep-groove pressing. The record is probably VG+, although the seller uses the EX grading. The cover is listed as near mint. The auction closes in two days. The bidding starts at about $180 and so far there is no action. I would be remiss to not mention that this was also a favorite record of my dad’s. I can still picture him sitting in our living room with a glass of booze in one hand and a cigarette in the other and bopping happily to Sister Sadie, while urging me to come in and listen. It was one of the few times we kids were allowed in the living room, for reasons that are difficult to comprehend, but having to do with the living room being a showcase, so visitors to our tiny two-bedroom garden apartment could admire my mother’s great taste and style in decorating. It’s a great memory.
The post Playing Favorites first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Let’s start with some original 10-inch vinyl, none of which seems to be getting much action: Howard McGhee Volume 2, Blue Note 4024. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG or VG- condition for the record, and VG+ for the cover. I could actually be in the mix for this one. I have a nice copy of the vinyl with no cover at all. The starting price is about $80 and the auction closes later today with no bidders yet. Seems like a no-brainer, at least to put in some kind of bid. Here’s another 10-inch Blue Note that has more in common than just the label: Gil Melle Quintet, Blue Note 5033. This is also an original Lexington Avenue pressing, from the same seller, listed in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. No bids yet, with a start price of $100. The common element: Both records feature the great Tal Farlow on guitar.

Here’s another interesting set: Miles Davis, Miles His New Quintet, Esquire 32-021. This is an original UK pressing listed in M- condition for the record and Ex for the cover. Bidding is in the range of $55 with nearly three days left on the auction. From the same seller: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Esquire 32-039. This is another original UK pressing listed in EX+ condition for the record and the cover. Bidding is also in the $55 range with nearly three days left. And one more: Benny Golson, Gone with Golson, Esquire 32-125. This one is somewhat of an aberration compared to the others, in that it uses a similar cover design as the U.S. original. The record is listed as EX+ and the cover is EX. Bidding is in the $90 range.

The front and back of the cover were signed by Benny Golson, who plays tenor on the record and wrote the compositions and arrangements. I’m not sure if the presence of the signature adds or detracts from the interest in the record from collectors. This copy sold for $1,259.56. The Benny Golson signature reminded me of the Steven Spielberg “The Terminal” with Tom Hanks, in which a Benny Golson autograph plays a prominent role, believe it or not. If the record had been signed by Lee Morgan, it would have gotten a lot more interest, right? Perhaps even in the $3,000 bin like this one. Tubby Hayes Quintet, After Lights Out, Tempo TAP 6. This was an original British pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and VG++ or VG+ for the cover. The final price was about $3,210.

Here are a few jazz vinyl auctions I’m watching that will close this week:

Beverly Kenney Sings With Jimmy Jones and the Basie-Ites, Roost 2218. This is an original pressing listed in EX condition for the record and VG for the cover. The start price is $400 and so far there are no bidders.

Pete LaRoca, Basra, Blue Note 4205. This is an original New York USA pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is already in the $750 range.

Zoot Sims – Bob Brookmeyer Octet, Stretching Out, United Artists 4023. This looks to be an original red label mono pressing. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is Ex. I’ve had this record for years and it wasn’t until I began typing this and looked at the back cover that I realized Brookmeyer was a co-leader of the date. I just assumed it was Zoot and Al Cohn.

The post The $3,000 Bin and More first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
