Let’s follow up on some of the items we were watching, and then look at a few more that are on eBay now. There was that copy of Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590 from Chick Corea’s personal collection, sold by the eBay seller Carolina Soul. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. When we last tuned in the bidding was at $3,050. The final, final price was $3,350. From that same auction there was an original pressing of Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This was also from the Chick Corea collection, with the record listed as VG/VG- and the cover graded as VG+. This one sold for $452.99.

We were also watching some jazz vinyl from the Jazz Record Center, including Mal Waldron, Mal/2, Prestige 7111. This was an original yellow label pressing with the New York address. We assessed the record as being in VG++ condition, based on the description, and the cover as VG++. We threatened to possibly bid on this copy, since we don’t have an original, John Coltrane is one of the musicians, and, at the time, the bidding was in the $260 range. Alas, we moved on to other events in our life, hence the relatively infrequency of recent posts, and forgot all about Mal/2. The final price was $568.88, which would have been beyond our bidding in any case. Nothing ventured, nothing lost, nothing gained – except I still have my Japanese pressing.

As I am typing this and creating new links, I am on the Jazz Record Center web site and I see they have another auction closing in about five days. Let’s see, here is a deep-groove West 63rd Street pressing of Lou Donaldson, LD+3, Blue Note 4012. Interesting that they don’t use the word “original” in the description, so perhaps someone can shed light on why this copy would not be an original. In any case, the record and cover look to be in M- or VG++ condition. The bidding starts at $150 and so far there are no bidders.

From the same auction: Workin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige 7166. This is an original yellow label New Jersey pressing. The record and the cover both look to be in M- condition. The cover is still in its original shrink wrap and, psychologically, it definitely looks cooler in the shrink wrap. Perhaps that is leading to higher bidding? The bidding on this one has already surpassed $400.

Let’s look beyond the usual suspects, at least as far as eBay sellers. Here’s one: Dizzy Reece, Star Bright, Blue Note 4023. This looks to be an original deep-groove West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG+, with some writing on the back. The auction closes in about five days from this posting and the bidding is in the $600 range.

One more: Johnny Griffin Sextet, Riverside 12-264. This looks like an original pressing with the small reels and mic logo and the deep grooves. It also has promo stamps on the cover and label. I don’t remember all the factors that go into making these early Riverside’s original, so I could be missing something? Anyway, this copy is listed as VG++ for the record and VG++ for the cover. Nice looking copy. Bidding starts in the $250 range and so far there is no action. If it were a Blue Note with this personnel in this time frame, who knows what it would be. But it isn’t.

Not necessarily ready to start selling records on eBay again, which is how the whole Jazz Collector thing began more than 20 years ago, but buying records on eBay? Well, that, of course, is another story. Buying records is easy, fun, and not typically harmful to one’s health, tat least not physical health, and while it does damage to one’s pocketbook, some things are just worth taking a plunge. Besides, I can always say I’m making sacrifices for my lovely audience here by testing the waters and using tools such as the GIXEN free eBay auction sniper. You may recall a few weeks ago, I bid on a record on eBay for the first time in years. I was too gun shy to use GIXEN for the first time, so I sat down at my computer, and waited for 15 minutes, watched the countdown and put in a bid with six seconds left for the record of my desire, The Unique Thelonious Monk, Riverside 12-209 from the Jazz Record Center. I bid $411 and lost. The winning bid was $416. I was disappointed, but no disheartened. I decided I would try again, this time using the GIXEN app to see if it really worked. And I did. And it did.

The following week, doing my regular posting here at Jazz Collector, I came upon this record: Donald Byrd, Fuego, Blue Note 4026. This was a deep groove pressing with the West 63rd Street address. I had a copy of Fuego for years. I specifically remember buying it at the Titus Oaks store in Flatbush, Brooklyn. I probably paid five bucks for it, but it was in meh condition at best, with a less-than-meh cover. I’d always vowed to upgrade it if I ever found a suitable replacement for a reasonable price. Yada, yada, yada, 40 years later, no suitable replacement at no reasonable price.

Then, in 2023, I decided to shrink my collection and sold a bunch of records through Carolina Soul Records. One of the criteria I used in deciding which records to sell was this: I went through all of my shelves, and if there were records that were in poor condition that I wouldn’t want to put on my turntable, I would sell them and let some other collector deal with them, even if they were original Blue Notes. Especially if they were original Blue Notes because, as we’ve all learned, even an unplayable original Blue Note can sell for big bucks. Is there a point in owning the record just to own it even if you’re not going to play it? Please don’t answer the question – it is both rhetorical and existential, and, if you’re taking the time to read this on JazzCollector.com, we all know that the answer is yes.

In any case, that Byrd Fuego had always caused me to cringe when I went past it. Something about the tape on the front cover, the dirt on the back cover, knowing that the record was in poor shape. I put in the pile to sell and felt better immediately that it was off my shelf and out of my collection. But there was a hole where it departed, and I knew that hole had to be filled someday.

Then, I saw this copy on eBay. As I noted in the post (Eric Dolphy Autographs (?), Blue Notes And Other Stuff), I believed the record might sell for a “reasonable” price. The seller had a good reputation, the cover looked really clean and was graded in VG++ condition. Right away, I knew I’d feel much better just looking at that record on the shelf. As for the vinyl’s condition? I wrote at the time that the record looked to be in VG or VG+ condition and probably VG based on the seller’s description. In thinking about bidding on the record, I assumed VG, but was hoping for (expecting?) VG+.

Anyway, I decided to use GIXEN and see what happens. I put in a bid for about $250. What the heck, it was an original Blue Note with Jackie McLean in his prime, probably a very good record, and if it was in VG+ condition, I would have considered it a bargain. Besides, the whole point in bidding for the record on GIXEN was to serve my starving audience at Jazz Collector with firsthand, on-the-ground, in-the-trenches, personal journalism. Right?

I used GIXEN and forgot all about it. Completely. Until I got a note informing me that I had won the auction at a price of $202.50. Surprise! GIXEN did its job. Now I had to do mine. I paid. The record arrived about a week later, pretty fantastic delivery, considering it came from France during the Christmas season. I finally got around to listening to it yesterday, on my nice system in my living room, with the Linn Sondek record player and the Wilson speakers. The verdict: Well, the seller was accurate. The record looked VG+ or even VG++, but it played at what I would grade VG. Nothing terrible, no big clicks or scratches, just enough surface noise in spots to take it out of the VG+ grade, IMHO. The music itself is good, kind of what you would expect out of a Blute Note from 1959, a little bit of funk, a little bit of blues, all original compositions. I love Jackie, so it’s nice to have a listenable copy of the record again. VG is fine for me. And the VG++ cover. Now, when I look on my shelves through the Donald Byrds, I no longer have to cringe and can just smile, knowing that 40 years later, the hole has been adequately filled. Of course, if I find a cleaner copy, well, need I say more?

Let’s look at some jazz vinyl from eBay that may be on the wish lists of Jazz Collectors everywhere, starting with: Sahib Shihab, Sahib’s Dance Party, Debut 141. This looks to be an original Debut Denmark pressing listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The bidding is in the $500 range with nearly four days left on the auction. There are already 13 bidders and more than 30 bids. This record has sold for more than $1,000 several times, with a high of about $1,600, according to Popsike. I’ve never owned a copy of this record, let alone listened to it. I take it the high value placed on the record is a tribute not just to its rarity, but to the quality of the music as well?

It features a great band that also includes Tina Brooks, Boby Timmons, Roland Hanna and Ben Tucker. The record is listed in VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. Bidding is close to $400 with four days left in the auction. I was recently talking with a jazz fan who had just turned 90, and he was reminiscing about going to the Five Spot almost every night in the late 1950s, particularly when Monk was playing there regularly. I was hoping to buy some records from this particular gentleman, or at least to peruse his collection. He assured me he had a bunch of original Blue Notes and Prestiges. But he lived in a large house and, after about an hour of searching, we never did find the records. True story.

I see my friends at Carolina Soul are back with an auction, including Dexter Gordon, Go, Blue Note 4112. This is an original New York USA pressing, listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. Cover looks fantastic in the pictures. Bidding is at $400 with more than four days left in the auction. When I worked with Carolina Soul a couple of years ago to sell some records from my collection, there was a copy of Dexter Gordon Go in the batch. It was a duplicate, of course. Don’t remember what it sold for, but I do know these original Blue Notes are constantly going up in value, or in the case of a certain Freddie Hubbard LP going Up, Up, Up.
The post A Jazz Vinyl Christmas on eBay first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

It’s off to hunt we go. Here’s a new listing: Freddie Hubbard, Hub Cap, Blue Note 4073. This is an original West 63rd street pressing, one of the last of the West 63rd Blue Notes. This one is graded in VG+ condition for the record. The seller has a bunch of pictures of the cover. My grade would be VG based on the pictures. There is nearly a week left in the auction and the start price is $500, with no bidders so far.

Here’s another one with a start price of $500 and no bids: Dexter Gordon, Our Man in Paris, Blue Note 4146. This looks to be an original mono pressing with the New York USA label. The record and cover both look to be in VG++ condition based on the seller’s description.

Let’s keep going through eBay. We’re bound to fine something that has a bid.

Ah, here we go. A Blue Note, of course: Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition, with not a lot of additional details or explanations. The bidding is in the $375 range, but it has not yet met the seller’s reserve price. There are four days left in the auction.

We are now on page three of eBay, 60 listings per page. So we have been through 120 records, some nice ones, but any more nice ones with bids. We are under $200. Let’s see what awaits us as we scroll down this page.

Here we go again. Another Blue Note. Big surprise: Donald Byrd, A New Perspective, Blue Note 84124. This is a stereo pressing with the New York USA label. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is VG++. There is one bid at $150. I love this record, but I’ve never regarded as one of the more valuable of the Blue Notes, possibly because it is so different, with the voices, and possibly because it was so successful and there were probably more copies in print than its neighbors in the early 1960s Blue Note catalogue.

If you listen to my radio show tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on WTBR FM Pittsfield, you will hear Beast of Burden from this record. My theme for this week’s show has to do with records having a 24 in their catalogue number, hence, Blue Note 4124. I also play Jackie McLean’s Swing, Swang, Swingin’, Blue Note 4024, but not Kenny Dorham at the Café Bohemia, Blue Note 1524, because I recently sold my copy through the Carolina Soul auction. It was fun putting the show together. The only one I found worth playing with the actual number 2024, was Things Ain’t What They Used to Be, Prestige Swingville 2024.

Which brings me to . . . . Happy New Year, Jazz Collectors everywhere. May the new year bring peace, health, comfort and rare vinyl to you all.
The post Jazz Vinyl for the New Year first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Overall, I’ve been extremely pleased with the way things have gone in my dealings with Carolina Soul. They have been professional in every respect. Very communicative, clear, consistent. They have been prompt with payments, and have answered any questions I’ve had with clear explanations. As for differences of opinion that we may have had on grading: I respect what they do and how they do it. I heard from several winners of the auctions that they agreed with me that some of the records were undergraded. Yet, Carolina Soul also experienced a number of returns. In fact, about 20 of my records that were returned are on eBay right now. For example: Andrew Hill, Black Fire, Blue Note 4151. I’ll provide a more complete list at the end of this post.

In addition to selling about 600 records through Carolina Soul, I had mentioned in a previous post that I had another 3,500 or so records I was hoping to sell to a local dealer/friend/acquaintance. That transaction also happened and he came to the house with a colleague and picked up the records a few weeks ago. I sent him an email asking how he has been doing with the records, but haven’t heard back yet. In any case, I’ve shrunk my collection by about 4,000 records and feel great about it. I’ve done a couple of reorganizations since then, and I find that the collection is less overwhelming and I’m able to enjoy the records more, and listen to them more frequently and attentively.

Another reason I’ve been more attentive to the records is that I am now hosting a radio show here in my local community in The Berkshires. It is called Jazz Collector Live and it is on WTBR-FM Pittsfield. I’ve taped three shows so far and, last I heard, the first show is scheduled to debut tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern. I realize the show is called Jazz Collector Live and, in fact, it is not live. To me, it’s like John Coltrane Live at Birdland or Sonny Rollins Live at the Village Vanguard. The show was live when I recorded it, so that makes it a live recording. Anyway, the show will appear “live” tonight and you will be able to stream it or download it in a few weeks, once I have a few more shows under my belt. I’ll talk a lot more about it in future posts and definitely solicit feedback from my friends here. I’ve never done radio before and I’m really enjoying it.

The radio show is a volunteer gig and is a result of me trying to scale back on my work, which has been happening, slowly but surely. For the past six weeks or so (pretty much since my last post on Jazz Collector), I’ve been winding down my existing work assignments and trying to limit new projects that I take on. This has meant that my nose has been to the grindstone with working. It has also taken up a lot of my brainpower and I’ve had less time to devote to posting here. In any case, this past Wednesday I got caught up on all of my work assignments. I still have a new one coming in this week, but I’m really hoping to be working less, especially during the summer. Perhaps that will translate into more time doing Jazz Collector, but I’m experienced enough to know that I’ve thought those thoughts before and it hasn’t necessarily translated into action. So, we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, here’s the list of my records being sold this week by Carolina Soul:

This week we are watching a new auction from the Jazz Record Center in New York. Seems like the seller Carolina Soul has become the predominant seller of rare jazz vinyl on eBay in the past year or so, but the Jazz Record Center is still a gold standard as far as I’m concerned. This week, we have a couple from Kenny Dorham, starting with Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This looks to be an original pressing that would probably be in M- condition for the record and cover, were it not for a drill hole through the cover and label. The item is new to eBay and doesn’t close for more than six days. The starting bid was $1,000 and there is already one bidder. Also, there is Kenny Dorham, ‘Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia, Blue Note 1524. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. Very nice copy, I’m sure. Like Quiet Kenny this auction closes in more than six days and already has a bid at $1,000.

I’ve never owned an original pressing of this one: Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This is also an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record looks to be in M- condition and the cover is probably VG+ or VG++, depending upon how you feel about tape repairs. For me, the tape repair brings it to VG+ even if the rest of the cover is clean. But that’s me. This one has a single bid at $500. Well, if I want a clean original copy of Bill Evans Explorations, Riverside 351, here is one, with an odd flaw in the cover. If you look at the picture, it looks like the printer mis-aligned the color separations. I’ve never seen that before and it makes the cover art more ethereal, but probably not in a good way for collectors. Anyway, the start price for this one is $400 and so far there are no bids.

Let’s start with Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This is an original pressing that was listed in Good condition for the record and Fair for the cover. The seller suggested that the buyer clean the record “multiple times” before judging the condition. OK. Also, I should mention that the seller’s rating on eBay is 97.7%. When I originally spotted this record, the start price was $1,000 and I was curious to see if it would sell. It didn’t. So the seller relisted it for $500 and it did sell. I don’t have an original copy of Cliff Craft in my collection, but I wouldn’t be interested in one of G/F condition, especially if I had to pay $500 for it. Very happy with my clean United Artists pressing, which I bought for $10 from Red Carraro sometime in the previous century.

Here’s another relister: Lou Donaldson, Lou Takes off, Blue Note 1591. This looks to be an original pressing in VG condition for the record and probably VG+ for the cover. When I first spotted this record the start price was $399 and I was pretty sure it would sell. But it didn’t, and is now back on eBay at $229.

Whilst we’re on records that didn’t sell, there is this: Jim Chapin Ensemble Featuring Phil Woods, Prestige 213. This is an original yellow label 10-inch pressing. The record is listed as EX and the cover is VG. This was up for auction at $150 and there were no bidders. It is now on eBay as a buy-it-now with a price of $224. For those of you who don’t know, Jim Chapin was a drummer and was also the father of Harry Chapin. I knew this because they were Long Islanders and my friend Danny used to do club dates with Jim Chapin. There’s a good documentary about Harry Chapin on Amazon Prime Video, if anyone is interested. I, myself, am a sucker for almost any well done music doc.

Finally, we will let CeeDee weigh in with a couple of his typically barbed, relevant and fully missives. Here’s one note I got from him:

“Check out World’s Experience Orchestra – The Beginning of a New Birth LP – Rare Spiritual on eBay.” In case you don’t want to click the link, this was an original pressing from that Carolina Soul auction. It was in VG- for the record and VG- for the condition. It sold for $2,405. Back to CeeDee: “Not only Sun Ra. This must be a hell of an LP to get that kind of bread (in that condition). Call me a cynic but . . . HELL, NOOO! Is that what happens when states legalize marijuana. Buyer frenzy, all doped up on weed!! Say it ain’t so (Mary) Jane . . .”

Here’s the other note:

“Check out MIKE SELESIA: Flavor US OG ’76 Free Jazz OG Private Vinyl LP Hear on eBay!” The record was VG+, the cover was VG and the final price was $1,005. Back to CeeDee: “Once more once: WTF???? Who? What? And . . . Why? Befuddled I am.”

Anyone else befuddled out there, for this or any other reason?

From the Jazz Collector inbox:

If you happen to anywhere near the area of Woodstock, NY, this weekend one of our loyal readers is running a record show in two locations. He promises lots of dealers and lots of records. The event is on Saturday and details can be found at The Woodstock Vinyl Co-Op. Alas, I would love to be there, but we have guests coming in from California for the Memorial Day weekend. Unless I can convince them that a day in Woodstock would be a lovely break. Hmmmm.

Another record show, the New Jersey Jazz Record Collector’s Bash is coming back after a Covid hiatus. The event will take place Oct. 27-29 in Edison, N.J. You can check it out here.

This came in from another collector: “I have a vinyl copy of So Much Guitar by Wes Montgomery and on the front cover Ron Carter is spelled Ron Cartar. Is this a rarity?” I checked out my copy, which is an original pressing (or so I think) and Ron Carter is Ron Carter. Does anyone have any insight into this one?

This from our friend Maarten Kools: Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. It is a beat up cover, no record. The seller calls it VG+. I’d call it VG-, generously. You can buy it now for $499.99. Don’t all jump at once or we might crash the internet. Maarten, always gentle and generous with his comments, said: “Do not mean to post this in a negative way . . . hey, if you can sell this one for $499, I am happy for that person.” The note came in from Maarten at the end of April and it seems the cover is still for sale.

From the Jazz Collector miscellany box:

I had an hour and a half to kill the other night and flipping through Amazon Prime I noticed a documentary called Vinyl Nation. Nothing about collecting jazz in there, but worth watching just to hear people talking about their love of records and to see some interesting footage about how records are actually produced and pressed.

The cover has a cutout hole in the center. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG+. Start price is $350 with no bidders and plenty of time left on the auction. What strikes me about this is why Prestige changed covers so early and often in the early years. Off the top of my head, I can think of a bunch of similar situations: Sonny Rollins Plus Four, John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio, All Day Long, all come to mind. I know the cynical answer is they did it to make money, but how? Were they also experimenting to see what would sell better? Perhaps covers with innocuous photos such as this Wardell record, versus a picture of a black artist? Perhaps a careless buyer would buy both copies? Perhaps they envisioned a time in the far off future when they could drive collectors crazy with questions like this? I have raised this question before and Rudolf has been helpful in sharing his insight. Any other thoughts?

I mentioned that the seller Carolinasoul has a lot of nice jazz records for sale now (and seemingly always), including a couple from the Transition label: Doug Watkins at Large, Transition 20. This is an original pressing with the booklet. The record and cover are both listed in VG condition and the bidding is in the $300 range with more than three days left on the auction. Donald Byrd, Byrd’s Eye View, Transition 4. This is also an original pressing with the booklet. Gotta love those original collectors who kept the booklets. This one is graded VG+ for the record and VG for the cover. Bidding is also in the $300 range. One more non-Blue Note from the same seller: Gil Melle Plays Primitive Modern, Prestige 7040. This is an original New York yellow label pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. Bidding is in the $200 range with more than three days left.

This looked to be graded in EX condition for the record and the cover. The final price was $1,187. Per Popsike, this is the second highest price ever recorded for this record. In 2018 a mintier copy sold for $1,225.

From the same seller was Eric Dolphy, Out There, New Jazz 8252. This was an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves. The record and cover looked to be in M- condition. The final price was $760. This looks to be the highest price yet recorded for this record. Popsike’s previous high was $618. Speaking of Dolphy, this one from the Carolina Soul auction is getting some heavy action: Eric Dolphy, Out to Lunch!, Blue Note 4163. This is an original New York USA mono pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. The bidding is at $570 and the auction closes today.

Monica Zetterlund and Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby, Philips 08222. This was an original Swedish pressing listed in Ex+ condition. The final price was $383.

Finally, Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. This was a United Artists pressing. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG-. The final price was $91.
