Contrary to my last experience a few weeks ago when I asked the question Where’s The Action?, I’m actually seeing quite a bit of activity this week, from buyers and well as sellers. Let’s start with Kenny Dorham, Afro-Cuban, Blue Note 5065.This is an original 10-inch pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover, although the picture of the back cover might call that grade into question for discerning buyers. But the seller stands by his listings, and any bidder can see the picture and judge for himself. There are seven bidders and the price is in the $160 range with a little more than a day left on the auction.

Speaking of Kenny Dorham and 10-inch LPs, there is this: Sonny Rollins Quintet Featuring Kenny Dorham, Prestige 186. I type this with a pang of disappointment, for this is a record that has always eluded me, and it would be very nice to have a copy, especially in my pared-down collection, where each record has a little more meaning. But, alas, the cover is just too beat up for me to be pleased with the record, even though the vinyl is listed in VG+ condition, especially at the start price of $300 or the buy-it-now of $390. I pass.

This one seems to be in really nice shape: Miles Davis, Volume 1, Blue Note 1501. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record is listed as VG+ and the cover as VG, yet I look at the pictures of the cover and it looks pretty nice, save for some damage at the bottom of the sleeve opening. If I didn’t have a clean copy, I’d take a shot, with a start price of $355 and a buy-it-now of $455.

Curtis Fuller Quintet, Bluesette, Savoy ST-13006. This looks to be an original stereo promo copy with the red label. I noticed the Savoy logo on the cover is unusual. Is that a logo they adopted for stereo pressings? In any case, the record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG+ with a spine repair. Bidding is in the $200 range and the auction closes in one day.

The same seller had Curtis Fuller Volume Three, Blue Note 1583. This looked to be an original deep groove mono pressing with the West 6rd Street address. The record and cover were listed in VG+ condition. The final price was $736.

John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was a mono pressing. It looked like it had deep grooves, but there was no mention of deep grooves, ears, RVGs or any of the other markers – not to mention it was a New York USA label. And someone had sliced the cover on the top and spine. Who would do that, and why? Anyway, despite all of those issues, the record still sold for more than $200. BTW, am I the only one who wonders why they called the record Blue Train as opposed to Blue Trane?

One more: Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This looked to be an original red label pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and probably VG for the cover. The final price was $580.
The post Four for the Holidays first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I will leave it to others to flesh out more detail – thank you, Clifford, in advance – so I will just share some of the highlights, starting with Don Pullen/Milford Graves in Concert at Yale University. This copy had a hand-painted jacket, the likes of which was unfamiliar to me. The final price was $9,515.

This is one with hand-drawn shower curtain labels: Sun Ra & His Arkestra Featuring Pharaoh Sanders and Black Harold. Yes, the likes of the shower-curtain labels are unfamiliar to me as well. This one sold for $6,089.98.

There were dozens of records getting really really high prices, many of which remain out of my interest or expertise, including the two above. I’ll offer one more, but it’s worth going to the site to see for yourself: Infinite Spirit Music, Live Without Fear, Ancient Afrika Records. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+, with no hand painting or shower curtains (to my knowledge). The final price was $2,025.

Among the jazz vinyl we watch more regularly here at Jazz Collector, there was Lee Morgan Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This looked to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG condition for the record and VG- for the cover. Despite the less-than-stellar condition, this copy sold for $1,828. And there was Curtis Fuller Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. This was an original deep groove West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG condition for the record and the cover. The final price was $1,113.55. And Tommy Flanagan, The Cats, New Jazz 8217. This was an original purple label pressing that looked to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $810.
The post Free Jazz (And More) At a Price first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

“Heya, Al, just randomly nosing around eBay and noticed a few records, all from the same seller. Not one of the more-known sellers we talk about, but the guy recently sold a pretty nice batch of sides for some hefty sums. Included in those were Curtis Fuller New Trombone, Prestige 7107, which at $1,259 set a new record, and also a Riverside white label Monk Plays Ellington, which, at $1,077, was the third highest ever, according to Popsike.

“And riddle me this one: Yusef Lateef Cry Tender, New Jazz 8234 blowing away all prior sales at $1,125! That’s almost $700 more than the previous high! Color me curious, if not suspicious. There may be some other new records set in that batch, but I didn’t dig any further.”
The post “A Pretty Nice Batch of Sides” first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
