A Couple of Rare Birds, One For the $1,000 Bin

We’re still running the contest to give away a free copy of The Charlie Parker Memorial Album, Savoy 12000. Please comment on the site to be eligible to win. Meanwhile, here are a couple of nice bird collectibles that sold recently on eBay, including one for the $1,000 bin.

Charlie Parker, Alternate Masters Volume 2, Dial 905. This was an original 12-inch Dial, quite rare. It was in very nice VG++ condition and was sold by the seller Herschel78, who has been selling some beautiful items lately. This was fetched a price of $1,350.

Also from Bird is this: The Charlie Parker Story, Savoy 12079. This was an original pressing, with a great cover of a relaxed Bird sitting on a throne. This was from the same seller and was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $150. You don’t often see the Bird Savoys selling for these prices.

A Surprise Price For Bechet 10-Inch on Dial

We try to watch for interesting items at trends at Jazz Collector, and not always on the highest price tags or the Blue Notes. Here’s one we were watching a few weeks ago that we found interesting. The record was: Sidney Bechet with Kenny Clarke, Black Stick, Dial 301. This was an original 10-inch LP and it was listed in VG+ condition, for both the record and the cover. It caught our attention because of the selling price, which was $103.50. Normally even the Bechet’s on Blue Note don’t sell for this price, unless they are original Lexington Avenues in near mint condition. Not sure if this is because of the Dial label, or because of the presence of Kenny Clarke, but it was definitely surprising to see this in the $100-plus range. We had a discussion on the site a few months back about the dearth of demand for some of the earlier artists, so perhaps this is a signal

Welcome to Jazz Collector. We’ve been very good about updating the web site every day, so if you haven’t been visiting, please take a look: There’s been some interesting discussion and we’ve been watching some nice items on eBay. Speaking of eBay, as we often do, we start this newsletter with advice to sellers, which we hope will generate some reader response. We also have our usual assortment of upcoming items, some new LPs in our Price Guides and an all-time favorite music clip.

I was recently talking to a subscriber who is interested in selling his collection on eBay as a retirement business. Here’s the main advice I gave him:
