I haven’t been on eBay for a few weeks, so let me sidle over there now to see what treasures are lingering for those willing to pay a small fortune for rare vinyl that will surely increase in value at some point in the near or distance future. Ah, right on top among the search for highest price auction records is this great record: Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This looks to be an original deep groove West 63rd Street pressing. The record looks to be in VG+ condition, based on the seller’s description. The cover is listed as VG++, but from the pictures, it looks more VG-plus-ish to me. The auction closes later today and, as of this writing, there is one bid at $1,350. From the same seller, there is Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing, probably VG++ condition for the record and VG for the cover. I said I would continue perusing the recent auctions from The Jazz Record Center, so here is Part II, starting with Elvin Jones and Richard Davis, Heavy Sounds, Impulse AS-9160. This was ana original white label stereo promo copy with the white label. The record was in M- condition and the cover seemed to be probably VG++. This is not a record you see very often, particularly a promo copy. One of the interesting things about this album is a track called Elvin’s Guitar Blues, featuring Elvin Jones’ first recording on a new instrument, the acoustic guitar. I happen to have an original pressing of this record, so I’m putting Elvin’s Guitar Blues on the turntable now. The verdict: Well, I’m sure it was fun for Elvin to record a track on guitar, but he’s a little bit better as a drummer. Frank Foster takes a nice, short blues solo on the track. Let’s close out the year with another real-time excursion through eBay, with a search of some of the higher priced jazz vinyl on auction now. It’s off to hunt we go. Here’s a new listing: Freddie Hubbard, Hub Cap, Blue Note 4073. This is an original West 63rd street pressing, one of the last of the West 63rd Blue Notes. This one is graded in VG+ condition for the record. The seller has a bunch of pictures of the cover. My grade would be VG based on the pictures. There is nearly a week left in the auction and the start price is $500, with no bidders so far.
