Oh, yes, I had a watchlist on eBay that I haven’t looked at in two weeks. Let’s see what’s there. Phil Woods et al, Four Altos, Prestige 7116. This was an original New York yellow label pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover, although I’d say VG+ for the cover. My feeling about cover gradings is if there is a seam split, then VG++ is a bit too optimistic. But that’s me. Anyway, this was a promotional copy and a pressing from a library, which always gives me pause because who knows how the record was handled all these years. This one sold for $451.99. Now the four alto players on this record are Woods, Gene Quill, Sahib Shihab and Hal Stein. And my question is this, for those of us, like me, who mostly organize records alphabetically by artist: Is there any collector out there who files this record under anyone else besides Phil Woods?

Of similar vintage but from a different seller: Phil Woods Septet, Pairing Off, Prestige 7046. This was also an original pressing but the condition was quite a bit less, VG for the record and VG or even VG- for the cover. The final price was $102.50. Not bad, all things considered (for the buyer, that is).

Introducing the Rocky Boyd Quintet, Ease It, Jazztime 001. This was an original pressing. The record was VG+ but the cover was only G, damaged quite badly. Still, the record sold for $850. Guess somebody had a nice cover and a trashed record. I’m in that position, only on the other side with True Blue. I have a decent record, but no cover at all (although I did stick it in a Japanese cover, but every time I look at it I know, deep down, that I’m only fooling myself).

Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, Blue Note 1518. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and quite possibly M- for the cover. Not easy to find in that condition, as was reflected by the final price of $998.70. Another buck thirty and we’d be in the thousand dollar bin for this one.

This one was listed at $350 and didn’t sell and then resisted at $350 and didn’t sell again: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Blue Note 4003. This was an original mono pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was listed as Ex-. Normally $350 would be a selling price for this record. However, on the back, in blue ink, Blakey had signed the record and dated it in looks like 1977. Is it possible the autograph actually diminishes the interest in the record for collectors? For me, I like having the autograph.
The post Prestiges, Blue Notes and a Boyd first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

This is an original UK pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It’s a another cool cover, IMHO, illustrating the instruments of the two sets of pairs, the trumpeters and altoists. It’s quite a bit different than the U.S. version, which was released as a session led by Phil Woods. Bidding is in the $120 range with more than a day left on the auction.

Here’s a nice one: Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing that looks to be in VG+ condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. This one is now in the $1,260 range, but I would expect the final price to be much higher, as this is a record we’ve often seen sell for much more, even in less than perfect condition.

This one caught my eye because it’s not something I normally collect: Bill Evans, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, Mobile Fidelity UD1S 2-002. This is a sealed copy using something called an Ultrasonic one-step cutting process, which I can surely Google to find out more information, but it also sounds something like marketing hype, so I will pose the question to our readers who may have more information and interest in these new types of issues: Does it sound different/better than the original? I have my doubts, but I am open and would even consider buying a copy of the record, since it is a favorite, although the price is getting up there. This one is already at more than $200 with another day left.

This is an original pressing with the deep grooves and the purple label. The record and cover both look to be in about VG++ condition. The seller has placed a high opening price of more than $700 and so far there are no bidders. We’ll see. I don’t recall this record ever selling for more than $500. I tried doing a Google search for information about the cover, but there was scant detail. Anyone? At the same time, there is also this for sale on eBay: Eric Dolphy, Outward Bound, Esquire 32-123. This is a first press from the U.K. The condition is not nearly so good as the American original, I would guess VG for both the record and the cover, based on the seller’s description. There are three days left on the auction and there is a single bid at about $66.

Here’s another nice Prestige:

Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab, Gene Quill and Hal Stein, Four Altos, Prestige 7116. This is an original New York yellow label pressing with the deep grooves. The record and cover are both listed in VG++ condition. The bidding is in the $120 range with five days left.

And one more: Jack Sheldon, The Quartet and the Quintet, Jazz West 6. I would love to have an original pressing of this record, but not in this condition. The record and the cover are both listed as VG-. And the start price is $200. Given the condition, methinks the seller is being quite optimistic, but we shall see. We’ve seen many Blue Notes in worse condition sell for higher prices, but those are Blue Notes and this is not.

I mentioned all of these nice records on eBay last week that were making my eyes cross. Here are some of them:

Phil Woods and Gene Quill, Phil and Quill with Prestige, Prestige 7715. This is an original New York yellow label in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It closes in about 11 hours and is currently in the $225 range. Quite a beauty. This one is being offered by Atomic Records, which also sold this one: Clifford Brown and Lou Donaldson, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5030. This one was in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $228.05.

The seller of this record also had quite a large number of nice records: Jackie McLean, A Fickle Sonance, Blue Note 4098. This looked to be an original mono pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $264. Also from this seller was: Horace Parlan, Speakin’ My Piece, Blue Note 4043. This looked to be an original deep groove West 63rd Street pressing in VG+ condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. It sold for $499.

This seller also has some real beauties, including:

Mal Waldon, Mal/3 Sounds, Prestige 8201. This is an original yellow label promo copy in M- condition for both the record and the cover. You don’t see this one too often, not even on eBay. The price is now about about $350 with a couple of more days to go. You should check out the listings from this seller: Some really nice stuff. Here’s one more: Jackie McLean, Makin’ the Changes, New Jazz 8231. This is an original deep groove purple label pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It closes in about a day and the bidding is in the $340. range.
