Miles Davis Volume 1, Blue Note 1501. This looks to be an original Lexington Avenue pressing, the first of the 1500 series. It is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The start price is around $200 and so far there are no bidders with just a couple of days to go. This seller has a bunch of nice items up for sale this week, including: Miles Davis Volume 2, Blue Note 1502. This also looks to be an original pressing in similar condition to Volume 1, M- for the record and VG++ for the cover. This one also has a start price of around $200 and has one bidder, so far. One more Blue Note: Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The bidding is in the $250 so far for this LP.

May as well stick with Blue Notes this morning:

Lou Donaldson, Wailing with Lou, Blue Note 1545. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. There are five days left and the bidding is in the $160 range.

Grachan Moncur 111, Evolution, Blue Note 4153. This is an original New York USA pressing with the ear, Van Gelder, etc. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The price is $150 and there are no bids yet.
The post A Tale of Five Blue Notes first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I follow their auctions closely because, to me, they are the most reputable of all dealers and, therefore, I see their auctions as fully reflective of market realities, no hype.

Zoot Sims, Down Home, Bethlehem 6051. This was an original red-label pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $510. I recently picked up my first copy of this record and listened to it the other day. Quite nice: Great Zoot and nice to hear early Dave McKenna. The copy I purchased is in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. Very pleased.

Sonny Rollins, The Sound of Sonny, Riverside 241. This was an original white label pressing in what looked to be M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $426. This one went for a little more than usual: Sonny Rollins, Sonny Boy, Prestige 7207. The record looked to be M- and the cover was probably VG++, with a couple of minor blemishes. It sold for $170.39.

Grachan Moncur III, Evolution, Blue Note 4153. This was an original New York USA pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $688.90. Wow.

Lee Konitz, Tranquility, Verve 8281. This was an original pressing with the trumpeter logo. It was in M- condition for the vinyl and probably VG++ for the cover. It sold for $111.87.

Clifford Brown Quartet, Blue Note 5047. This was an original 10-inch Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was in M- condition and the cover looked like it was probably VG++. The price was $900.12. That’s the highest price we’ve ever recorded for this album in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

Speaking of new highs, this was one from the recent Jazz Record Center auction: Grachan Moncur III, Some Other Stuff, Blue Note 4177. This was in M- condition and sold for $775.43. As we’re seeing pretty consistently, these later original Blue Notes are really increasing in value. I had sold a copy of this record for around $500 a couple of years ago and that was, by far, the highest price we’d seen up to that point.

Sonny Clark Trio, Time 70010. This was an original pressing rated VG++ for the record and VG+ for the cover, even though the headline stated it was M-. Pretty interesting/deceptive move by the seller. It sold for $699.99.

Look at the price on this original Riverside:

Kenny Drew Trio, Riverside 224. This was an original pressing with the white label. The record was rated in VG++ to M- condition but the cover was only fair. The price was a whopping $637. I’m sure even the seller was surprised. Happy, but surprised.

Dizzy Reece, Blues in Trinity, Blue Note 4046. This was an original pressing with the deep grooves, West 63rd Street address, etc. It was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $634.99.

I took a week off from posting records on eBay. It was quite refreshing, to be honest. But I’m back with this week, slowly, with a few items, including a few Blue Notes. Among the items worth noting:

Grachan Moncur III, Evolution, Blue Note 4153. This is a mono New York USA pressing and it’s in very nice condition, particularly the vinyl which may have been unplayed until I put it on the turntable to try it. You’ll probably see this item popping up on the top of many listing pages when you do a search for jazz records. It costs about $25 for this feature on eBay and I use it once in a while when I have a nice record. I do it mainly so more people will open it and perhaps pay us a visit here at Jazz Collector. I’m not sure if it helps to drive a better price for the record itself, but it certainly can’t hurt.

Freddie Hubbard, Ready for Freddie, Blue Note 4085. This is also a mono New York USA pressing with vinyl that’s in

very nice condition. These two Blue Notes, the Moncur and Hubbard, are still among the items I purchased a few months ago from that collection in Trenton, N.J. In case you’re new to the site or missed that story, you might want to go back to the Adventures in Jazz Collecting Series. It’s worth it. It’s easy to find these articles if you just click on Jazz Memoirs on the tag at the right. In addition to the several Blue Notes I have on eBay now, I’ve also put aside some Miles and Trane on Prestige, which I hope to post later. I also hope to get time to put together this special on Bird I’ve been promising all week.
The post A Few Blue Notes on Ebay For You first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I’ve been putting more records on eBay lately — just a function of time and how much work my real job entails — and I actually structured some organization to the items I posted last week. I had accumulated a bunch of Prestige duplicates, so today is Prestige Day and there are 10 Prestiges closing later. Then I had pulled out a bunch of 10-Inch LPs, so tomorrow is 10-Inch Day, and there are 16 10-inchers. Then, on Thursday, I decided to go back to Prestige with another 10 items. Then I figured we can’t let a week go by without a proper Blue Note, so on Thursday night I put up a heavy-duty Blue Note collectible. Here’s a sampling of items of interest, and you can always see my eBay Items if you click Items For Sale above:

Gil Melle, Gil’s Guests, Prestige 7063. This is a nice copy in VG+ condition, both record and cover, and it plays really well. Not to mention that it features some great Kenny Dorham. This one is only at $49, so it could be a bargain, depending upon how heavily trafficked eBay is today.

John Coltrane and Hank Mobley, Two Tenors, Prestige 7043. This is a yellow label with the New Jersey address and it’s also in nice VG+ condition, plays great. This is one of those second pressings I was talking about in an earlier post: It’s not the first issue of this LP — which was under Elmo Hope’s name — but it’s a great package, great cover and great record and it’s Prestige and it’s yellow label and it’s Coltrane. To me, it’s irresistible (which is why I have two copies, I guess).

And the heavyweight Blue Note is:

Grachan Moncur III, Some Other Stuff, Blue Note 4177. This is a New York USA pressing and it’s in very nice condition: M- on the record and VG++ on the cover (graded conservatively). It’s currently priced at $99 and we’ll see what happens as the week progresses. It closes Thursday evening.
The post This Week on eBay: Prestige, 10-Inch & a Blue Note first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Another slow, slow, slow day on eBay. So slow, in fact, that we only found a couple of records to watch. So slow that we looked all the way ahead until Wednesday to make sure no one inflicted mischief on our computer to prevent it from viewing collectible jazz records. Fortunately, as we looked ahead, we found some nice collectibles from some of the reliable sellers in the Jazz Collector world, including Euclid Records, Atomic Records and the Jazz Record Center. As for today, the nicest record we found is already closed: The Marty Paich Quartet, featuring Art Pepper, Tampa 28. This was an original red vinyl pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover VG++. The price was $260. Also of interest today: Zoot Sims and the Modern Art of Jazz, Dawn 1102. This is an original pressing, with the record and cover both listed in M- condition. Current price is about $70. That’s really it for today, but tomorrow will be better, we promise. Stay tuned for that post. In the meantime, here’s an update on some of the other items we’ve been watching:

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with the Andy Warhol cover. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. Price: $360.

Booker Little Four, United Artists 4034. This was an original pressing. The record looked to be in VG+ condition, the cover VG+ as well. Price: $104.70

Grachan Moncur III, Evolution, Blue Note 4135. This was an original mono pressing in M- condition, vinyl and cover.
