Some Weird Happenings in The $1,000 Bin

I was looking to update the $1,000 bin and came upon this weird item that was mentioned in the Reader Forum: Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. This was mentioned as an original Lexington Avenue pressing and it sold for $1,925, even though there was no picture of the label and the description of the record was minimal, without even a clear explanation of the condition. How the bidding got to $1,925 on this is hard to believe, except for those of us who watch eBay regularly and know full well that anything is possible. As one of our reader’s discovered, this is actually a United Artists pressing, which means it’s worth maybe $30, depending upon the condition. The seller has only 96 feedbacks, so let’s hope this is an honest mistake and not a scam.

This one looks more legitimate, but a little weird as well: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1668. This one was listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG/VG+ for the cover, although there was a lot of tape damage in the picture and there was also a name written broadly on the label. It sold for $1,900, which is hard to fathom given the pictures of the cover and the label.

Jazz Vinyl on eBay: Mobley, Clark, Trane, Pres, Chet

Another day, another couple of thousand jazz records on eBay. Here are some of the ones we’re watching:

Hank Mobley, No Room For Squares, Blue Note 4149. This looks to be an original pressing, with the New York USA label and the ear, and it is listed in M- condition for the record and what looks to be VG++ for the cover. You may recall that a recent copy of this record sold for $1,009. I’m sure the seller here, Atomic Records, noticed as well. This one is currently in the $130 range but has yet to meet the seller’s reserve price.

Sonny Clark, Dial S For Sonny, Blue Note 1570. This is an original pressing with the West 63rd label, deep groove, etc., and it is listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The current price is around $425 and there is still one day left on the auction.

This one doesn’t usually go for a big price, but it is in nice condition and it is a promo copy (it’s also a fantastic record, musically): John Coltrane, Live at Birdland, Impulse 50. This has the white promo label and is listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It has one bid, but the price is $198.

Shades of Blue Note

We’ll continue to keep an eye on Blue Note today. Here are some recent sales of Blue Note jazz vinyl:

Freddie Redd, Shades of Redd, Blue Note 4045. This was an original deep groove pressing that looked to be in beautiful M- condition. I’ve always wanted an original copy of these record, since it is a personal favorite and I’ve only owned a Japanese pressing for many years. One day I’m sure I’ll find an original at a price I would be comfortable paying, which was not this copy, which sold for $1,282 from my friends at Music Matters in California.

Curtis Fuller, Bone & Bari, Blue Note  1572. This was also an original pressing from a reliable dealer. The record was in what looked to be VG++ condition, while the cover was listed as being “in very good shape” which sounds better than VG and, from the pictures, also seemed to look better than VG. If I were bidding, based on the description, I’d be disappointed if the record wasn’t around VG++, which is probably what the winning bidder assumed as well, since the record sold for $710.

‘Tis the Season To Be Blue Note

After mentioning some of the 4100 series Blue Notes yesterday, I perused the day’s listings on eBay and saw a number of other records from this generation that seemed to be getting quite a bit of action. Here are some of the results and I’ll also post the one that CeeDee pointed to in the earlier post that will certainly raise some eyebrows. Here goes:

Joe Henderson, Page One,  Blue Note 4140. This was an original New York USA pressing with the ear and the  Van Gelder stamp in the dead wax. The record was in VG+ condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $325.

Sam Rivers, Fuschia Swing Song, Blue Note 4184. This was listed as an original pressing with the New York USA label. The condition seemed to be somewhere around VG+, perhaps a little better, based on the seller’s description. The price was $278.

This is of a bit earlier era, but a surprising price (well, as much as any price can be surprising these days): Horace Silver, Blowing the Blues Away, Blue Note 4017. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd label. It was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover and sold for $202 with just one bidder.

Jazz Vinyl Update: Blue Notes, The $1,000 Bin (& More)

Okay, back in the saddle. Let’s look at some of the interesting jazz vinyl we’ve missed on eBay, starting with the $1,000 bin and a few others that came close:

This one has been mentioned several times in the comments, so here it is with picture for the record: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This was in VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover and it was sold by Euclid Records. The price was $1,944. This one also came from Euclid Records: Lawrence Marable, Tenorman, Jazz West 8. This was an original pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG+. The price was $1,711.11.

Lee Morgan Volume 3, Blue Note 1557. This was an original pressing. The record looked to be VG++ and the cover looked to be somewhere between VG and VG+. The price was $1,075.

Updating the $1,000 Bin

What have we been watching lately on eBay? Let’s look at some records for the $1,000 bin:

Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was an original pressing sold by Atomic Records. The record looked to be VG+ or VG++ and the cover was listed as VG+. The pictures were nice and clear, so perhaps that helped in getting a high bid. This one sold for $2,280.55.

Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This was an original pressing sold by my friend Steve at Round Again records in Providence. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG. The price was $1,936.88.

John Coltrane, Coltrane, Prestige 7105. This was an original yellow label New York pressing sold by our other friends at Music Matters. It was in M- condition and sold for $1,280.55, definitely a high-water mark for this LP on Jazz Collector.

Another Blue Note Day At Jazz Collector

Here are a few more high priced blue Notes  we’ve been watching on eBay:

Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This was an original deep groove pressing and it was in VG++ condition for the record and what looked to be VG+ for the cover. It sold for $939.77. Do you think people are buying these Blue Notes at these prices for investment purposes, thinking that they will continue to increase? Or do you think it’s real collectors buying them for the music? Or perhaps it’s something in between: Real collectors buying them for the music, but also looking at them as a solid investment?

Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Ave pressing that looked to be in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $776.

Here’s some nice jazz vinyl we missed:

Lee Morgan, Lee-Way, Blue Note 4034. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $847, which is by far the highest we’ve seen for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

Kenny Dorham, Afro-Cuban, Blue Note 5065. This  was an original 10-inch pressing that looked to be in very nice condition: The record was VG++ and the cover was M-, with a crisp, clear picture. The price was $811.91.

A Mobley Day at Jazz Collector

Here are some updates on some of the items we’ve been watching on eBay.

Those Mobley’s from the seller bullsite2000 did all right, particularly if you were bullsite2000. There was Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This was an original Lexington Avenue flat edge pressing and it looked to be in beautiful condition. In fact, if you have a second you should click on the link and look at the pictures posted with the listing: They are absolutely pristine, looking as if they could have come out of the Blue Note catalogue in 1957. Anyway, it sold for  $2,382, which is quite a bit more than it would have sold for in 1957 and quite a bit more than what Mobley got paid to actually record the session, right? Jazz Vinyl On eBay: Mobley, JJ, Trane

What, pray tell, is on the Jazz Collector watch list this week? Glad you asked.

The seller Bullsite2000 from Italy has another fine batch of records on eBay, including: Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing and it looks to be n beautiful M- condition. The seller is quite reputable, so we see no reason why this one won’t join its many brothers in the $1,000 bin when it closes tomorrow. The current price is a bit more than $600. Here’s another from the same seller: Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the flat edge, deep grooves, etc. It’s in beautiful condition with equally beautiful pictures. The current price is more than $800 and it has not yet reached the seller’s reserve. Would anyone be surprised if this one
