Let’s start with some original 10-inch vinyl, none of which seems to be getting much action: Howard McGhee Volume 2, Blue Note 4024. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG or VG- condition for the record, and VG+ for the cover. I could actually be in the mix for this one. I have a nice copy of the vinyl with no cover at all. The starting price is about $80 and the auction closes later today with no bidders yet. Seems like a no-brainer, at least to put in some kind of bid. Here’s another 10-inch Blue Note that has more in common than just the label: Gil Melle Quintet, Blue Note 5033. This is also an original Lexington Avenue pressing, from the same seller, listed in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. No bids yet, with a start price of $100. The common element: Both records feature the great Tal Farlow on guitar.

Here’s another interesting set: Miles Davis, Miles His New Quintet, Esquire 32-021. This is an original UK pressing listed in M- condition for the record and Ex for the cover. Bidding is in the range of $55 with nearly three days left on the auction. From the same seller: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Esquire 32-039. This is another original UK pressing listed in EX+ condition for the record and the cover. Bidding is also in the $55 range with nearly three days left. And one more: Benny Golson, Gone with Golson, Esquire 32-125. This one is somewhat of an aberration compared to the others, in that it uses a similar cover design as the U.S. original. The record is listed as EX+ and the cover is EX. Bidding is in the $90 range.

I see that our old friend CeeDee has a few links for us, starting with another WOW: Sonny Stitt Plays, Royal Roost 2208. This was an original deep groove mono pressing listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The cover pictures could indicate some optimistic grading. The final price was $760. It went from $219, which is pretty high for this record, to the final price in the last few seconds of the auction. There were 12 bidders altogether. This has to be the highest price ever for a Stitt on Roost record. So, let’s swing over to Popsike and . . . . Indeed, it is not just the highest price for a Stitt on Roost, it is the highest price for any Stitt. Hey, it’s a great record and he was a great player.

More missives from CeeDee:

Shelly Manne, 2,3,4, Impulse A-20. This was an original orange label mono pressing from the Jazz Record Center. The record looked to be in M- condition and the cover was probably VG++. The final price was $400. This also must be top dollar for this record and perhaps any record with Shelly Manne as a leader. Back to Popsike . . . . Nope, it is the second highest. In 2013 there was as sealed copy of Shelly Manne & His Men at the Blackhawk Volume One that sold for $494.

Sun Ra & His Arkestra, Media Dreams, Saturn, CMP 1978, “Handmade Shower Curtain Art.” Not being a Sun Ra collector, I know little about this album, nor do I know what is meant by Handmade Shower Curtain Art, although it sounds quite intriguing. I’m sure Clifford will fill me and others in soon enough. In any case this record as in VG+ condition and the cover was VG-. The final price was $3,225. CeeDee also sent this one: Sun Ra & His Arkestra, Deep Purple, Saturn 485, also with handmade shower curtain art. This record was VG/VG+ and the cover was also VG-. The final price was $2,551.

I received a note from a gentleman in Sweden who has what is likely the most complete collection of Howard McGhee recordings in the world. I am not sure what he wants, but, with his permission, I would be fine to share his email address with anyone interested. You know where to reach me.

Here’s another question from a reader, for which I don’t have the answer at hand, but I do think the answer may be buried somewhere on the Jazz Collector site in comments. One of these days, when I am no longer working full time, I will take the time to go through the site and compile everything relevant into a wonderful print or web edition. In the meantime, the question at hand is: “Does anyone know what happened to the inventory of Dayton’s when Jimmy died? Was it sold? Does it still exist?”

Here’s another link that came in from a reader, with the following note:

“Subject: Jackie McLean on Ad Lib without cover

I wonder how many people would pay $1,280.99 for an album without a cover? Rare album of course, but still . . . .

Jackie McLean, the New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601″

The record was listed in VG++ condition. There was some damage to the label on the A side. Answer to the question: If someone had the cover, but didn’t have the record, that person would pay $1,280.99 for the record.

The record and cover were listed in EX condition. The final price was $355. I always liked the music for the Peanuts gang, but I never did own this record. And still don’t. I guess it’s the season because I was watching another copy at the same time. This copy of A Charlie Brown Christmas was listed in VG++ condition for the record and EX for the cover. The final price was $227.50.

Here are some 10-inch LPs we’ve been watching, starting with Hank Mobley Quartet, Blue Note 5066. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record and cover were both listed in VG+ condition. The final price was $1,625. A merry Christmas for the buyer and the seller, I presume. Howard McGhee’s All Stars, Blue Note 5102. This was also an original Lexington Avenue pressing, listed in EX condition for the record and the cover. The final price was about $516. From the same seller, Vinyl-House-UK came this one: Illinois Jacquet, Jazz by Jacquet, Clef 167. This was an original trumpeter logo pressing, listed in VG+ condition for the record and EX for the cover. The final price was about $86.

I’m hoping to post once again in 2021, but if not, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year’s.
The post New Year’s Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Some of this stuff goes back a few weeks (or more) but I kept them in the queue thinking that someday I would do exactly what I am doing now. Here goes, starting backwards, from May there was Howard McGhee, Dusty Blue, Bethlehem 6055. This was an original mono pressing that was listed in VG condition for the record and G for the cover. It was in pretty bad shape, yet it sold for nearly $500. I don’t understand what it is about the record or condition that warranted that kind of price, with a bidding war to boot, so perhaps someone here can elucidate me.

I was watching this copy of the original 78-RPM recording of Billie Holiday, Strange Fruit/Fine and Mellow, Commodore 526. It was at $225 when I did the post and wound up selling for $255. I just checked Popsike and, oddly, a copy sold on June 19 for $1,000. And another copy sold on May 9 for $810. The $1,000 and $810 copies were in better condition than the $225 copy, as you might expect. And further into my watchlist was still another copy of Strange Fruit that looked to be in near mint condition and this one sold for $331.

One of my all-time favorites that I never get tired of listening to: Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This was an original New York yellow label with the original framed cover. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG. The final price was $775.75

John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This was an original West 63rd Pressing. The seller confidently declared that this was “easily one of the top ten Blue Note 12-inch LPS in existence.” The seller was bobdjukic so you can draw your own conclusions as to the veracity of that statement. The record was listed as VG+ and the cover as VG++. The final price was $2,381.

From the same seller: Roland Kirk, Triple Threat, King 395-506. This was, according to the seller “one of the rarest jazz albums in existence . . . copies in good condition of this monster rarity are all but unknown.” This one was in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The final price was $841.

Here Comes Louis Smith, Blue Note 1584. This was an original West 63rd Street mono pressing, with the ear, deep grooves, Van Gelder et al. The record and cover were in M- or VG++ condition. The final price was $1,500 and there was only one bidder. I am usually a bit skeptical about records that sell with just one bidder, but $1,500 is not an unreasonable price for this record. My skepticism with one bidder is that the seller could have a shill to get the bidding started at a high asking price and then find that no one else is interested because the start price is so high. Same seller and same situation with Johnny Coles, Little Johnny C., Blue Note 4144. This was an original New York USA pressing, also M-/VG++ , also just one bidder, with a final price if $500. One more single bid winner from the same seller: Lou Donaldson, Sunny Side Up, Blue Note 4036. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with the original cover. Similar condition, M-/VG++. Final price was $1,000.

This record has risen a lot in value since we have been watching records on eBay: Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um, Columbia 8171. This was an original stereo pressing with the six-eye label. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG. The final price was $239.50.

I wrote about this one skeptically as well: Wayne Shorter, Speak No Evil, Blue Note 84194. This one was pretty well trashed, graded in G+ condition. I even titled the original post “Shorter Shilling.” Turns out there was one bid at $495. I think my original instinct was on target, but you never know. Someone may have really wanted a trashed copy of a semi-original Blue Note. The other one I was watching at the same time, Wayne Shorter, JuJu, Blue Note 4182, in just VG condition for the record and the cover, sold for $621. With five bids and five bidders, this one seemed legit, albeit a bit pricey.

Watch list is still not emptied so to be continued . . . .

This is an original French pressing and, I have to admit, it does look pretty cool, particularly for the price. It has a nice cover, deep groove labels, and, in its own way, is an original pressing, or something like it. At least it was an original French pressing. It probably sounds really good too. Anyway, this one was in M- condition for the record and the cover and sold for $24.99. A bargain compared to the U.S. originals of Cookin’, which seem to be in the $300-plus range these days. Unfortunately, I opened the link after the auction closed. Otherwise, this record would have been mine. Of course, even it I didn’t want the record, it would be fun writing about it, just so I could put that headline on the post.

While we’re tasting international flavors, check this one out:

Howard McGhee, The Connection, Felsted 2512. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,375. I mention this as a record of international flavor because, if I recall my record label history, Felsted was a U.K. label. I think it opened a U.S. subsidiary at one time, but I’ve always considered it to be of U.K. descent. Perhaps someone out there knows more of the history?

Here’s another 10-incher: Howard McGhee, Volume 2, Blue Note 5024. This one was VG+ for the vinyl and between VG++ and M- for the cover. When we were watching it it was in the $150 range and it didn’t really move from there, selling for $159.50.

This 10-incher didn’t sell at all: Lester Young and his Tenor Sax, Aladdin 706. This one was in VG- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The start price was $99.99 and there were no bidders.

May as well stick with the 10-inch theme today: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Volume 3, Blue Note 5039. This was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the vinyl and sold for $229.
The post Jazz Vinyl Update: A Smattering of 10-Inch LPs first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Jackie is back: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This one is from a reputable seller and is listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. VG+ is always a risk, but this one is play-graded and sounds like it is in pretty good shape. The bidding has already topped $1,000 on its way to . . . . we’ll see. Also on eBay now is one of my favorites, Jackie McLean, Swing, Swang, Swingin’, Blue Note 4024. This looks to be an original pressing with the West 63rd address, deep grooves, RVG, ear. It is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. Start price is $650 and, with a day to go, there are no takers so far. For a high start price like that, I think most buyers would appreciate pictures of the labels, for what it’s worth, although I’d be OK bidding on this record if I was inclined to pay that high a price for it in any condition, which I’m not.

This one is tempting:

Howard McGhee, Volume 2, Blue Note 5024. This is an original Lexington Avenue 10-inch LP, featuring both Horace Silver and Tal Farlow, two of my all-timers. I happen to have a mint copy of this record with no cover, so the idea of getting a nice cover is very appealing. The vinyl on this one is VG+ and the cover is listed as VG+ to VG++. It is currently at about $150 with a few hours to go.

This one is tempting as well: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. This is the one with John Coltrane and Hank Mobley. It is an original pressing listed in VG++ to M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. This one is hard to find and the price isn’t that high yet — about $225 with two days to go. The problem: It has a reserve price and the reserve price has not yet been met. Is there any way of knowing what a seller’s reserve price is, other than just asking him directly?
The post Jazz Vinyl: Jackie-ing, Hope and McGhee first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Interesting that the Jazz Record Center has an auction this week fully devoted to 10-inch LPs. I’ve always been a fan of 10-inch records, I think more for the packaging and authenticity — I mean, they pretty much stopped producing them in 1955 — than necessarily for the sound quality, although some people swear by them. My friend Dan swears that the sound on the 10-inch version of The Tal Farlow album, for example, is far superior to the 12-inch version, even the original Norgran 12-incher. Anyway, prices of 10-inch LPs tend to be lower than corresponding 12-inch LPs, so we’ll see how this week’s JRC auction goes. Here are some of the items we’ll be watching

Jutta Hipp, Jutta, Blue Note 5056. This one looks to be in M- condition. It has already been bid up to $416 with four bids, so we’re expecting that this is the one that will sell for top price among these listings. Howard McGhee, Volume 2, Blue Note 5024. This one is in M- condition and looks gorgeous in the picture. I own Volume 1, but have never had Volume 2. Probably won’t get this one either. The start price is $250. So far there are no takers, but it’s early. Stan Getz, The Beginning, with Wardell Grey, Seeco SLP7. I have a lot of Getz LPs, even a bunch of 10-inchers, but this is one I’m quite unfamiliar with. Anyone have any info to share on this LP? The one from the Jazz Record Center is in M- condition and already has a bidder at $150.
The post 10-Inch LPs, Jazz Record Center, eBay first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
