One of our readers sent me a link to this record, noting that the price seems to be rising: Phil Woods, Warm Woods, Epic 3436. This copy was in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $605.55. Doesn’t seem that out of line for this record. If you look on Popsike, there are copies that have sold for higher prices, although probably in better condition. That’s one of the things that I’m noticing — for many of these classic records, condition is less of an issue than it used to be. Can’t help wondering if that is because people are collecting them to own them as opposed to listening to them.

Same reader sent me this link as well: Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and excellent condition for the cover. The final price was $2,026.

And to follow up on a couple of other items:

That copy of Hank Mobley Blue Note 1568 from the Jazz Record Center is now at $3,927 with more than three days left on the auction. Seems pretty clear that my guess will come up short. I will have to close the contest by end of day today, just to be fair to everyone. If anyone would like to adjust their guess, I am OK with that, but it has to be done by midnight my time (New York) today. I really do intend to give a prize, probably a book or a record, but nothing too rare or valuable.

Speaking of rare and valuable collectibles, there may be an opportunity to pick something up in Brooklyn today, where the 2017 WFMU Record Fair begins. I will not be there with a booth, having sold all of my duplicates at the fair two years ago (See You in Brooklyn? Not Anymore). If I could, I would go to early admission today, but I have work deadlines. If you don’t get there early, many of the best collectibles tend to be sold. In my experience, dealers come in from all over the world, spend the money for a table so that they can gain admission as the sellers are coming in, and anything decent at a decent price gets scooped up before the general public gets in. But it’s still fun. I would go tomorrow but I am doing something even cooler: As part of the Tribeca Film Festival there is a showing of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II at Radio City Music Hall followed by a panel discussion featuring Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire and Robert DeNiro. Pretty cool, huh? Perhaps I will go to the WFMU Record Fair on Sunday to look at the scraps and leftovers.

Here’s one from the U.K. destined for the $1,000 bin: Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet, Dusk Fire, Columbia SX 6064. This is an original British mono pressing. The record is listed in Ex condition and the cover is Ex+. The bidding is close to $1,100 with a full day left before the auction closes. From the same band and the same seller: Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet, Phase III, Columbia SX 6214. This one is in Ex condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $500 range. One more from the same seller: Lee Morgan, Indeed!, Blue Note 1538. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The seller lists it in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. Curious why he uses Ex for the U.K. records and VG for the American records. This VG+ is described as having numerous faint surface marks, scratches, hairlines, etc., “but it plays far better than it looks.” I’ll pass, particularly since the bidding is already in the $650 range.

Curtis Fuller, Volume 3, Blue Note 1583

We take note any time we see an item from the Jazzrecordcenter for two main reasons: (1) They are probably the premier jazz dealer in the world and (2) Because they sell with integrity, knowledge and credibility. In addition to this Curtis Fuller LP, click “View Seller’s Other Items” for some more nice records, including George Wallington, The Prestidigitator, East-West 4004 and Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051.

Hank Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061

This is another dealer who’s been selling some amazing records over the past few weeks. In addition to this LP he has several other rare items for auction over the next couple of days, including Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 4058, and Sonny Criss Plays Cole Porter, Imperial 9024. The start prices are high, but so are the caliber and condition of the records.

This is yet another dealer with an incredible selection of nice LPs in nice condition. I would love to know where these people find these records. Wouldn’t we all?

Those are some of the nice items coming up. Here are some of the items we were watching yesterday:

 Ted Brown Sextet with Art Pepper and Warne Marsh, Free Wheeling, Vanguard 8515.

This was in M-/VG+ condition and sold for $330. Another one we’ve never seen in 35 years.  The dealer made sure we were aware of the record’s scarcity. He wrote: “This is a really, really hard to find record. Honestly.”

Last week we spoke to Joe Schwab at Euclid Records about a record show coming up in St. Louis in a couple of weeks. We’ll give more details in the next newsletter on Friday. In the meantime, Joe had some pretty nice 10-inch LPs on eBay. The following three were all sold by Euclid Records.

 Chico O’Farrill’s Latino Dance Party, Norgran 28. This is a beautiful looking 10-inch LP in M- condition. Price: $202.50

 Bud Powell, Piano Solos, Clef 502. This 10-inch LP has a great David Stone Martin Cover. Condition was M-/M-. Price: $188

 Urbie Green, Blue Note 5036. This 10-inch LP was in VG++/M- condition. Price:  $165

 Here’s one I don’t get. Within hours there were two copies sold of Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago, Mercury 20449. There were both in nice condition. Here’s the first one.

So, what’s the big difference? Well, the price. The first one sold for $103.50, the second for $26. Am I missing something here? Anyone have any insight on this?

 Finally, here are two 10-inch Lester Young LPs on Norgran. Each one sold for $510. Here’s Norgran 5 and here’s Norgran 6.

 Just goes to show the importance of condition.
