Another Blue Note Day At Jazz Collector

Here are a few more high priced blue Notes  we’ve been watching on eBay:

Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This was an original deep groove pressing and it was in VG++ condition for the record and what looked to be VG+ for the cover. It sold for $939.77. Do you think people are buying these Blue Notes at these prices for investment purposes, thinking that they will continue to increase? Or do you think it’s real collectors buying them for the music? Or perhaps it’s something in between: Real collectors buying them for the music, but also looking at them as a solid investment?

Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Ave pressing that looked to be in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $776.

More Jazz Vinyl: Byrd, Trane, Book, Jackie

I spent some time yesterday putting some new items in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and came across a few odds and ends worth sharing.

This is yet another Blue Note that has hit a new high price in the past few weeks, at least as far as we can tell: Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing and it was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and probably VG++ for the cover. It had a nice picture, as you can see. The price was $637, which was not only a high for this record, but a high for any Donald Byrd Blue Note for the Jazz Collector Price Guide. This follows recent high prices for Wayne Shorter and Ike Quebec on Blue Note as well.

This one was getting a little bidding action and I’m not sure why, although it is certainly an excellent record: John Coltrane, Ole, Atlantic 1373. This seemed to be a routine pressing with the purple and orange label. With Atlantics of this vintage, I’m not sure how to tell if it’s an original, other than the heaviness of the vinyl and cover. Perhaps someone out there has some more information. Anyway this was in M- condition for the record and cover and it sold for $53.01.

Jazz Vinyl Today: Jackie, Newk, JJ, Booker Little

Let’s catch up on some jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay, shall we?

I expected this to fetch a higher price but, as I said earlier, I think the picture of the back cover was out of synch with the description: Jackie McLean, Capuchin Swing, Blue Note 4038. This was listed in M- condition and sold for $331.

This is a real nice record that doesn’t have the cachet of a Blue Note or a Prestige, but has excellent personnel, a nice cover, deep groove, etc.: Booker Little Four, United Artists 4034. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. The price was $118.25.

Back on eBay, Backing Buying Jazz Vinyl

A quick note before moving on to some eBay items. I am in the throes, once again, of buying a collection, and this time I’m even questioning my own sanity. As for the lovely Mrs. JC, well, she just looked at me and shrugged. Most of the records are swing and traditional, and they are of more recent vintage,  and, I fear, they are inflicted with some mold and mildew. However . . . there are some beautiful 10-inch LPs in the batch, and some quite interesting 78 boxes in gorgeous condition, and I feel that I am rescuing these records from neglect. I will keep you posted as I  take possession of the records, perhaps this weekend.

This one has already been called out and commented upon at Jazz Collector, but let’s keep an eye on it just the same: Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House Volume 1, Blue Note 1515. This is an original pressing with the Lexington Avenue address, flat edge, etc. It is in VG++ condition for both the vinyl and the cover and it has been bid to $1,800 already.

Jackie-ing On eBay

As we were catching up on items from last week, we noticed some interesting Jackie McLean records we were watching, so here comes some Jackie-ing on a lovely Monday morning in The Berkshires.

This seller had a bunch of nice records, but they were not in near-mint condition, so the prices seemed pretty reasonable, if you were willing to gamble. Here’s an example: Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal, Prestige 7068. This looked like an original New York pressing with the deep grooves and the flat edge and it was listed in VG++ condition for the cover and VG+ for the record. I could see where bidders, such as myself, might be a bit wary. The description of the cover sounded a lot more like VG+ than VG++ and the description of the vinyl used this language: “Scratches can be seen.” The record sold for $260.15. Somebody took a risk. More Questions About “Original” Blue Notes

I went back to look at some of those listings from Paperstax that have generated all of this discussion and controversy. I started with Jackie McLean, Swing, Swang, Swingin’, Blue Note 4024. When you look at the listing, it seems to have it all: West 63rd Street address, deep groove, but . . . when you look closely, Van Gelder in the dead wax as opposed to RVG, no mention of the ear. In bidding, I would assume — and did — that this was an original and that the seller inadvertently did not mention the ear and used Van Gelder descriptively as opposed to using the RVG. The reason is because I don’t quite understand how this can be a Liberty pressing and still have the deep grooves. The same thing with:

Jazz Vinyl Price Update: Jackie, Newk Et Al

I have a couple of hundred items to enter into the Jazz Collector Price Guide and I’m hoping to find some time this weekend. As I’ve been perusing through the entries this morning, I found a few that I never updated on the site, so here they are. No links on these, by the way.

Jackie McLean, Alto Madness, Prestige 7114. This was from about a month ago. It was an original pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $932. A copy of Jackie’s Pal sold for more than $1,500 last week. There’s definitely been something that has stirred some higher prices in the past couple of weeks.

Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This was an original pressing that was in VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG for the cover. The price was $610.. This was an original pressing that was

Let’s catch up once again on some more jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay:

Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565. This was from that seller in Switzerland who was selling off pieces from his own collection. This one was in VG++ to M- condition for the vinyl and M- for the cover. The price was $1,345.67. This came from the same seller and is definitely the highest price we’ve seen for this record, proving, I guess, that it’s not only a Blue Note world: Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal, Prestige 7068. This was in M- condition all around, vinyl and cover, and it sold for $1,592.89.

Here’s one that did not meet the seller’s reserve price and is now back on eBay, with a $300 bid and a buy-it-now price of $1,200:

Jazz Vinyl Update: Jackie, Miles, JR

Here’s an update on some of the jazz vinyl we’ve been watching. Each of these will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide as soon as we get the chance, hopefully by the weekend.

This one almost made the $3,000 bin: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This is the one that was listed as “almost M-” for both the record and the cover. Not sure how I’ll list that in the Jazz Collector Price Guide: Probably VG++, wouldn’t you say? Anyway, this one sold for $2,840.

I was also watching several listings from the seller dobdjukic, who tends to get top dollar, at least, for his auctions. Here are a couple from last week: Miles Davis, Birth of the Cool, Capitol T-762. This seemed to be an original mono pressing. On EBay: Jackie & A Pair Of Blue Notes

Back to eBay. Here are some items worth watching:

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. For a really rare record, this one does seem to show up quite often on eBay. This is from a seller who says he is pulling it from his collection and it is listed in “almost” M- condition, which I assume is quite nice. There are a couple of days to go and it is approaching $1,000, but has not yet met the seller’s reserve.

Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. A couple of notes about this item. It is being sold by bobdjukic, who seems to have a mixed reputation among our readers, to put it mildly and euphemistically. This one is listed as in “weak” M- condition for the vinyl, which sounds like VG++ or perhaps even VG+ and it is listed as VG++ for the cover.
