This was an original deep-groove purple label pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,575, in what looked like a bidding war between two buyers who must have really wanted this record. Taking a quick look at Popsike, the previous high price for this record was in the $640 range. I owned a copy for about two weeks after I purchased a small collection back in 2009, which I wrote about here at Jazz Collector. I wanted to sell a few of the records in order to make my money back quickly, and this was one of the ones I sold, probably for about $250 or so, back when I was still selling records on eBay and trying to get traffic to the Jazz Collector web site. There are very few records with Richardson as the leader, so I guess it has some cachet for that and for the fact that it is an original New Jazz. But nearly $1,600 for a VG+ copy seems like a bit of a stretch.

This was another one that seemed like a stretch: Dizzy Gillespie, Afro, Norgran 1003. This was an original yellow label that was listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $182.50, and I’m not accustomed to seeing any Dizzy records selling for collectible prices, with a few exceptions such as Bird and Diz as well as the two on Verve with Sonny Rollins and Sonny State. Back to Popsike, and it turns out that Afro is another Dizzy that has sold for more than $100 in the past, which makes me curious what it is about this particular record that makes it appealing to collectors, versus dozens of others by Dizzy.

Let’s close today’s post with good old reliable Freddie Redd, Shades of Redd, Blue Note 4045. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing, although it is hard to tell from the pictures. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is listed in VG+ condition. However, it is clear from the picture, that the cover is no better than VG, which makes me question the condition of the record as well. No matter. The seller is asking for at least $1,500, which puts it way out of my reach and, I would guess, out of the reach of anyone else, given the condition. We’ll see when the auction closes in four days. I guess if a Jerome Richardson record can sell for nearly $1,600, who’s to guess what an original Blue Note could sell for, even in less-than-pristine condition. Perhaps if the seller can sell this for $1,500 he can afford to purchase a new camera.
The post Top Prices for Jazz Vinyl Rarities first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

This looks to be an original purple label pressing. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is Ex+, which I imagine is close to M-. The bidding is in the $130 range with three hours to go and it has yet to reach the seller’s reserve price. I would think this would get a bid of at least $200, being quite a rare record on quite a collectible label, so we’ll keep an eye and see if this sells.

This one is from the same seller and has also not yet met the reserve price: Horace Parlan, Headin’ South, Blue Note 4062. This looks to be an early pressing, but is it an original? I’m not seeing deep grooves in the picture or on the listing, but this is one of those that was issued right at the borderline of whether Blue Note pressings still have deep grooves. I’m sure someone the question will be answered in the comments. The record is listed at M- for the vinyl and Ex for the cover. The bidding is currently in the $190 range with less than three hours to go.

Stanley Turrentine, Look Out!, Blue Note 4039. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing with the deep grooves, et al, and is currently priced at about $235 with less than 12 hours to go.

Here’s one I’ve never seen or heard of: Hal Stein and Warren Fitzgerald, Progressive 1002. This looks to be an original promo pressing in VG condition for the cover and Ex for the record. This is from a seller in Japan and has a start price of about $500 with no bids as of yet. The auction also closes later today. I did a quick Google search on each player, but perhaps someone out there from the Bay Area can fill us in with more details?

I had promised more updates for the Jazz Collector Price Guide and then got distracted by the lovely holiday weekend up in The Berkshires. So here are a few more that will go into the Price Guide soon:

This is a new high point for this record: Curtis Fuller, Bone & Bari, Blue Note 1572. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street and NY 23 labels. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $1,789. I have an M- copy of this record. Would I sell it for $1,789? Hmmmm.

This one also sold for quite a hefty price: Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. The record and cover were only in VG+ condition, although the cover certainly looked nicer in the photo. Good lesson to be learned here: Spend some time on the photos if you are going to list on eBay, and make sure they are nice and clear. This record sold for $987.77.

Jerome Richardson, Roamin’ with Richardson, New Jazz 8226. This was an original purple label with the deep grooves and the record and cover both seemed to be in M- condition. This one sold for $374. Frankly, I thought it would fetch a higher price.

This is one of those we were watching where it was really hard to gauge the actual condition of the record, because the seller claimed ignorance and listed the condition of the record and the cover as “GOOD or better.” In record collecting parlance, good means the record is really in pretty awful shape, perhaps not even listenable. I got the the feeling that this seller’s records were a lot better than that, including: Curtis Fuller, New Trombone, Prestige 7107. It sold for $393, which means buyer’s probably assumed it was at least VG+ or better. Didn’t see feedback on this particular record, but also didn’t see any negative feedback on any of the other records either.

Jerome Richardson, Roamin’ With Richardson, New Jazz 8226. This was an original pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $305. Looks like a new seller on eBay who will be posted some more items in the next few weeks.

Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7027. This looked to be an original pressing with the kakubushi cover. It looked to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $250.

This seller from South Korea sold some nice records this weekend, including: Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $638. Also, Curtis Fuller, Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. This was also an original pressing and this one was in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $421. Finally, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, Idrees Sulieman, Three Trumpets, Prestige 7092. This was an original New York pressing in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover.
Jerome Richardson, Midnight Oil, New Jazz 8205. This was an original purple label pressing in VG++ condition, both the record and the cover. It was sold by Euclid Records, which usually means it would get top dollar. However, in this case, we’re not so sure. This one sold for $153.50. We sold a copy of our own a few months ago for more than double that, even though it was in worse condition. We’re not sure what that means, other than the reality that prices on eBay tend to fluctuate for no apparent rhyme or reason.

Then there was this one from Euclid Records: Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House Volume One, Blue Note 1515. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $1,263. That’s the first time this record will enter the $1,000 bin in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. As we’re doing our Great Jazz Vinyl Countdown, this

will be a record that will come under close scrutiny. We have a nice copy and the ever-growing price tag is getting quite enticing. We’ll keep you posted on our thinking.

Finally, what do you think of this one: Jackie McLean, New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601? This was an original pressing in M- condition, for both the record and the cover. The top bid came in at $2,550, but the record did not sell because it failed to meet the seller’s reserve price. There was also a buy-it-now price of $3,600 on this record. We’ve seen this one sell for more than $3,000 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide but, still, $2,500 is a lot to turn down for a single record.
The post Jutta Hipp Blue Note Tops The $1,000 Mark, But Jackie McLean Does Not Sell For $2,500 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Finally, as promised, here are some of the nice jazz vinyl collectibles for sale on eBay today:

Barry Harris, Live at the Jazz Workshop, Riverside 326. This is an original pressing in nice condition. The current price is more than $190 and, frankly, I didn’t realize this record was in that price range. We’ll keep an eye on this as well as other copies when the come onto the market.

There are a few nice Jackie McLean records on sale today, including: Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067. This is an original pressing in nice condition, currently in the $140 price range. And this from Jackie:

Jackie McLean, Makin’ The Changes, Prestige New Jazz 8231. And this from Jackie: Jackie McLean, Destination Out!, Blue Note 4165. And This from Jackie: Jackie McLean, Swing, Swang, Swingin’, Blue Note 4024.

Here’s a beauty: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043.

Another nice Prestige: James Moody, Wail Moody Wail, Prestige 7036. The Moody records don’t seem to have the same cachet as the other Prestiges from this era.

And, finally, two from New Jazz: Jerome Richardson, Midnight Oil, New Jazz 8025, and Eric Dolphy, Far Cry, New Jazz 8270.
The post Today on eBay, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

It’s been a few days, so we’ll spend today catching you up on some of the interesting action we’ve been watching on eBay. Here goes:

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355, represents one of the defining jazz albums and now it is taking its place as a collectible of value as well. We’ve seen copies in nice condition begin selling in the $100 range earlier this year and now we have this copy breaking the $200 price barrier. It sold for $203.37.

Here’s a rare 10-inch LP sold this week by Atomic_Records: Beryl Booker, Dale 23. Price: $351

Here’s another 10-incher from Atomic_Records, but this one failed to meet its reserve price: Moondog and Friends, Epic 1002. High bid: $146.94

I used to be able to remember where and when I got every single record in my collection. However, now that the number has swelled to more than 10,000 and my age has swelled past 50, it’s not so easy anymore. I do remember getting a copy of this record, Abbey Lincoln, Straight Ahead, Candid 8015, for free. Years ago a colleague at work was throwing out a bunch of old records and knew I was a collector. Most of it was junk, but this LP, featuring Eric Dolphy, was sitting in the pile, and it was in great condition. It sold this week on eBay for $182.50.

A couple of big-ticket Blue Notes went this week:

Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. Price: $2075

Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. Price: $1,590.50

A few more interesting Blue Notes

Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. Price: $798

Freddie Hubbard, Goin’ Up, Blue Note 4056. Price $361

Dizzy Reece, Blues in Trinity, Blue Note 4006. Price: $347

And, finally, a couple from the Prestige catalog:

Jerome Richardson, Roamin’ With Jerome, New Jazz 8226. Price $724.93

Jackie McLean, 4, 5 & 6, Prestige 7048. This was in beautiful condition. Price: $812.12

That’s it for today. We’ll be back one more time with another eBay update before our next newsletter on Friday, July 23. Keep looking for us on the web and don’t forget to check out Price Guide and Latest Prices over the weekend for the latest information on eBay. — al
