When we spotted this there were four days left in the auction and the bidding was at $1,600. The final price was $2,753. Still a market for the high-end stuff from reputable sellers, right? From the same auction there was Sheila Jordan, Portrait of Sheila, Blue Note 9002. This was an original New York USA pressing that looked to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $306. Keeping up with the Jordans, I guess.

More from the same auction: The Magnificent Thad Jones, Blue Note 1527. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. The final price was $2,555, with 11 bidders and 17 bids. Those Lexington Avenue labels with the scripted lettering still give me chills. And another: Joe Henderson, Inner Urge, Blue Note 4189. This was an original New York USA pressing that looked to be in M- condition for both the record and cover, with the cover protected by the original shrink wrap. Thirteen bidders, 29 bids and a final price of $1,028.91.

Condition still counts (sometimes): Sonny Clark Trio, Blue Note 1579. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing that had a start price of $2,000. The condition was “solid VG” for the vinyl, with some tics on the playback. The cover was VG++. The record did not sell this time around. I’m sure it will be back, if it is not back already.

Finally, Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561, sold for $698. Jazz or not jazz, that seems to be the question. Either way, it’s a cool Blue Note cover, and a cool New York 23 label.
The post Catching Up on Some High-End Blue Note Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

There were 13 bidders for this record and the final price was $439. From the same seller there was Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was an original West 63rd Street deep-groove pressing, listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The final price was $2,475. Over the years, when people have contacted me for advice about selling their collections, I have always emphasized the importance of condition. While it is still of great import, of course, it seems that there has been a shift in the market and collectors are more willing to pay high prices for records in less than great condition. We’ve all been noticing this for a while, I’m sure, so it probably requires an adjustment for those of us buying or selling records to be aware of this pretty fundamental change in what jazz collectors are looking for these days. As with most trends, you wonder if this one will last and will become kind of a new standard in our little world of jazz collecting.

Then again, perhaps there are some bargains left on eBay, if you consider something like this to be a bargain (I do): Gigi Gryce and the Jazz Lab Quintet, Riverside 229. This was not a first pressing, which would have had a white label. But it was an early pressing with the blue labels, reels and mic logo and deep groove. The record was listed in VG condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $34.33. If this same record, in this, was a second pressing on Blue Note, the final price would have been quite a bit higher than $34.33 don’t you think?

Finally, I always get a kick out of seeing records I’ve never seen before. I’ve been going to record stores looking for jazz records for more than 50 years, plus I’ve been watching eBay closely for 20, so it doesn’t happen very often, but I’ve never seen this record: Curtis Counce Quintet, Exploring the Future, Dooto, 247. I assume this is an original pressing. The cover is pretty trashed and the record is graded VG. The start price is $320, the auction closes later today and so far there are no bidders. Interesting sidemen with Harold Land and Elmo Hope. Per Popsike, the top price for this record was $471, and that was for a copy still in its original loose seal. That one sold in 2021. Do you think the buyer broke the seal and listened to the record, or preserved it in its original packaging? Knowing what I know about collectors, my educated guess is that the record has never been opened or played.
The post Condition is Still Critical . . . Still watching jazz vinyl on eBay. Here’s one: John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, Impulse A-77. Gotta give the seller credit for being loquacious and highly descriptive about this record. We know why he is selling it, what equipment he played it on, how loud. It is one of the more unique listings I’ve seen. Anyway, after reading all that, I would guess, as the seller does, that the record is in VG+ condition, that it is an original pressing and the cover is probably in VG+ or VG++ condition. The start price is $400 and so far there are no bidders with a bit more than a day left on the auction. The seller says he is ambivalent about selling the record because he is afraid to play it, so maybe the market will make it an easy decision for him to keep it.

Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This is an original New York yellow label. The record and cover are listed as VG+. Bidding is in the $900 range with more than five days left. From the same seller: Thelonious Monk Trio, Prestige 7027. This is also an original New York yellow. Record and cover are both listed as VG++. Start price is $200 and so far there are no bids.

Now for some of the Blue Notes:

Joe Henderson, Page One, Blue Note 4140. This is an original New York USA mono. Discerning buyers would probably grade the record as VG based on the seller’s description. The cover is listed as VG+. Bidding is in the $150 range with more than five days left. From the same seller: Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This is an original West 63rd mono pressing. The record is VG+ and the cover is EX. Bidding is in the $700 range.

Cannonball Adderley, Somethin’ Else, Blue Note 1595. This is an original West 63rd mono pressing, listed in M- condition for the record and EX for the cover. Bidding is at $600 with more than a day left on the auction.

From the seller Carolinasoul we have Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This is an original West 63rd mono listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. Bidding is in the $160 range with more than six days left. I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that this record, despite being VG, will end up in the $1,000 bin. Pretty safe limb, I think.

Mint condition, original pressing. The speculation was that this would be the one to break the $2,000 barrier. Indeed. It sold for $3,551.50. Guess I got my copy just in time. Rudolf, could you ever have imagined that your jazz records would bring this kind of annuity? While I think the headline is not quite accurate and designed to attract eyeballs rather than inform (hey, I am still a journalist/editor at heart), the premise of prices going up for collectibles certainly pertains to our jazz vinyl market here at Jazz Collector. Although records are not one of the collectibles mentioned in the article, a lot of our recent posts have been about skyrocketing prices. Perhaps it’s a phenomenon of the pandemic and will wither a bit when the world goes back to some kind of new normal, or maybe it’s indicative of a market that seems to know no ceiling. Whatever it is, it’s becoming more and more tempting to get back in the game and start selling records again. Let’s see why, starting with J. R. Monterose, Blue Note 1536. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in Ex condition for the cover and record. Based on the pictures of the cover that Ex would translate into VG (at best) if I was looking to buy. The final price was $2,650.

Joe Henderson, Page One, Blue Note 4140. This was an original mono pressing that was listed in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. Again, I look at pictures of the back cover and think that VG+ is a stretch, which naturally makes me question if the M- is also a stretch. The top bid was $898 – and that failed to meet the seller’s reserve price. I realize that these are Blue Notes but, still, is this what to expect as the new normal?
