Here’s some jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay, starting with Roland Kirk, Triple Threat, King 539. This looks to be an original pressing listed in Ex condition for the record, which I’m taking to mean maybe VG+, and VG++ condition for the cover. It’s a rare record, but I’m getting pretty tired of the term Holy Grail, aren’t you? Anyway this grail, holy or not, has an starting price of about $1,000 and there are no takers so far. I’m a big fan of Kirk, and I don’t own this LP, but at $1,000 it doesn’t even come up on my radar.

Wes Montgomery, Full House, Riverside 434. This is a promo pressing with the white label. I can’t tell from either the pictures or the description whether it is an original pressing, but there is definitely a lot of action on the record so perhaps it is. The record and cover are probably in VG++ condition. The bidding is in the $340 range and the auction closes later today.

This seller can use a lesson in photo management:

Horace Parlan, Us Three, Blue Note 4037. This looks to be an original pressing in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. All of the pictures are sideways, which makes for an interesting viewpoint. Well, not really. Anyway, there is a single bit on this record and it is for $500. The auction closes today.

This is a 10-inch record in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. One of the things that makes the listing interesting is the statement by the seller that this is the “most rare and collectible 10-inch jazz guitar LP EVER MADE.” That is quite a strong statement, although seller seems knowledgeable, he is also quite hyperbolic, talking about this being the rarest “in the history of mankind.” In any case, I’ve never heard of this LP, but I’m sure it’s quite collectible. I know there are many jazz guitar enthusiasts out there, including my friend Dan, so perhaps we can have some real perspective on this LP. This auction is closing later today, there is a start price of $1,500 and there are still no bidders.

I’ve also got an eye on this one, and a story goes with it: Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This is an original pressing in what is probably VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It closes in six days and the start price is around $800. The story that goes with it is that I just purchased an original pressing of this record and it is the cleanest copy I’ve ever seen. I’m quite pleased about that. There are other records that were part of this collection and, once I sort it all out, I will share some details. But the M- Sonny’s Crib was one of the highlights, that’s for sure.
The post The Rarest Ever? Shall we see?

Horace Silver, The Cape Verdean Blues, Blue Note 4220. This looks to be an original mono pressing with the ear and the Van Gelder in the deadwax, although there is no close-up picture of the label to tell. This one is closing soon and is at more than $150 in VG+ or VG++ condition. Anyone out there have an explanation? Not that it’s not an excellent record, but it’s never been one of those that has garnered high prices. Perhaps because it’s a mono pressing?

We’d mentioned this one a couple of weeks ago when it sold for $81 in VG condition: Leo Parker and Bill Jennings, Billy in the Lion’s Den, King 395-527. The record here is VG+ and the cover is VG, but the pictures with the listing are very nice. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and, in this case, they seem to be worth several hundred at least: This one is already more than $325.

The picture with this one is nice also, but the seller has it graded only at VG for the record and the cover: Lou Donaldson, Wailing With Lou, Blue Note 1545. This is an original pressing and it plays with some surface noise, according to the seller. I’d love a copy of this record, but not at $345, the current price, in that condition. But that’s just me.

Good morning, Newk: Sonny Rollins, A Night at the Village Vanguard, Blue Note 1581. This looks to be an original pressing. The seller has listed the vinyl as ex plus and the cover as ex, which I assume translates to VG++ and VG+. The price is a little more than $450 with a few hours to go.
The post eBaying With Horace, Lou, Newk & Leo Parker first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Can’t sleep so I’m up early updating the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Here are some 10-inch records that will be going in:

Miles Davis All Stars Volume 2, Prestige 200. This looks to be an original pressing with the yellow label, probably one of the first Prestiges to have the famous yellow label. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $204.50.

I think this was the first LP issued by Blue Note: Mellow The Mood, Blue Note 5001. It features Ike Quebec, Benny Morton, Buck Clayton and others. The record was VG and the cover was VG++. You’d think it would fetch a high price just for the historic value. But, alas, this copy did not: It sold for $28.

I’ve never seen this one and it has quite a cool cover: Bill Jennings/Leo Parker Quintet, Billy in the Lion’s Den, King 527. This was listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $81.

Hard to find this one in M- condition, but here was a copy: Gerry Mulligan Quartet, With Chet Baker, Pacific Jazz 5. It sold for $115.52.

And now for some 10-inch Blue Notes:

Hank Mobley Quartet, Blue Note 5066. We’ve seen this one fetch some high prices lately, but this seems a little ridiculous: The record was in VG- condition, which means barely playable, and the cover was VG+. It sold for $510. Tal Farlow Quartet, Blue Note 5042. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $140.26. Gigi Gryce/Clifford Brown Sextet, Blue Note 5048. This was in VG condition for the record and the cover and sold for $249.50. Lou Donaldson, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5021. This was in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $151.50. Jay Jay Johnson, Blue Note 5028. This one was in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $170. Finally there was Clifford Brown, New Star on the Horizon, Blue Note 5032. The vinyl was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was listed in in VG++ condition as well, although there seemed to be clear damage to the cover in the picture, if you check out the link. I would have been wary looking at the picture, but the winning bidder was not: This one sold for $468.
The post Catching Up on Some 10-Inch Jazz Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The vinyl was in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $1,036.

This is a nice New Jazz LP with Phil Woods and Donald Byrd: George Wallington, New York Scene, New Jazz 8207. This was an original pressing with the purple labels and the deep groove. The vinyl was in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $565.55. I remember walking into a local store and seeing this record for three bucks about 15 years ago. Needless to say, it didn’t last long in the store and is still sitting on my shelf at home.

Here’s another original Blue Note: Herbie Nichols Trio, Blue Note 1519. This one looked to be in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It had the Lexington Avenue address, flat edges and

framed kakubushi cover. This one sold for $493.

Finally, another one I’ve never seen before and it has quite the cool cover: Bill Jennings and Leo Parker, Jazz Interlude, King 295-105. This was an original 10-inch LP. The vinyl was VG+ and the cover was VG and the price was $405. Check out the cover, below.

Dexter Gordon Quintet, Dial 204. This was an original 10-inch pressing. The record and the cover were both listed in VG+ condition. The price was about $240. I love these original 10-inch Dials, and the price on this one seemed pretty fair. But, alas, I was not a bidder. Also from Dexter was this: Dexter Gordon, Dexter Rides Again, Savoy 12130. This was an original pressing with the deep groove and the red labels. The seller listed it in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $69.

For the $1,000 bin there were these:

Roland Kirk, Triple Threat, King 539. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was graded in M- condition and the cover was listed as VG+. The price was $1,750, which is the highest we’ve seen for this record. Actually, this is the first time will be adding this record to the Jazz Collector Price Guide and, honestly, I can’t say I recall ever seeing a live copy of this one before.

Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, Prestige New Jazz 8225. This was an original pressing that looked to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. This one sold for $1,225. A similar copy sold for the exact same price a few months ago, as recorded in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West 10. This was an original pressing that appeared to be unplayed, according to the seller. The cover looked to be about VG+. The price was $1,155.55.

Finally, we were also watching this one and had referred to it earlier: Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed as M- and the cover as VG+. The price was $1,807.
The post Catching Up: Dex & A Few For the $1,000 Bin first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
