Catching Up (In Key West): Lee Morgan, Kenny Drew

I’m posting this on a porch overlooking the beautiful, turquoise Atlantic Ocean in Key West, Fla., where I am vacationing for a couple of days. Actually, it’s a much-needed vacation for Mrs Jazz Collector and I get to go along for the ride. Anyway, despite my adventure in paradise, I’m still keep tracking of eBay for my dear devoted followers on Jazz Collector. Here are updates on some of the items we’ve been watching, from Kenny Drew and Lee Morgan.

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with one side DG, which I think is how this record was first produced. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $631. Also from Kenny Drew was:

As we were looking ahead on eBay today, we came upon a few interesting Blue Notes, so we will declare today Blue Note Day at Jazz Collector. Here are some to keep an eye on:

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This is a mono pressing with the West 63rd Street logo. It has one side that is deep groove and, if I recall correctly, that is the original pressing. This is one of those oddball records in which there is just one side that has the deep groove. Anyway, the vinyl on this is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is $500.

Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This is also an original pressing, with deep grooves on both sides. The seller has his own grading system. This looks like it’s in VG+ condition, both record and cover, but some potential buyers might have higher expectations. The current price is close to $400.

And here are still more items for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $565.

Miles Davis, Steamin’, Prestige 7200. This was an original pressing with the New Jersey label. The record and cover were M- and the price was $123.50.

Some more for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, Impulse 30. This was an original white label promo copy. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $326. We’ve actually seen this go for slightly higher before. Interesting — I went to a play with Mrs. JC the other day (Mrs. Jazz Collector, not Mrs. John Coltrane), and they were using 1960s mood music between scenes. One of the tracks was from this album, In a Sentimental Mood. After the fourth note, I was able to identify it. Not difficult really — it’s a very recognizable version. Excellent play, by the way: The American Plan. Worth seeing if you’re in New York.

We were watching these two LPs from Serge Chaloff and questioning how big a difference the presence of Sonny Clark was have on impacting the price. Quite a bit, it turns out:

Another $1,000 Record, and A Few More

Here’s another record that recently broke the $1,000 price barrier: Lee Morgan, Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The vinyl was in VG++ condition and the cover was listed as VG+. The final price was $1,114. In the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we’ve previously seen this one sell for as high as $895. We’ll be adding this copy to the Price Guide later today. Also breaking the $1,000 barrier was that test pressing of the Jackie McLean Quintet, Blue Note 84116. This was a very rare pressing in M- condition and sold for $1,220. The other two test pressings that were available yesterday, also sold for fairly high prices: The Leo Parker, Rolling With Leo, Blue Note 84095 test pressing, sold for $631; the one from Sam Rivers, Dimensions and Extensions, Blue Note 84261, sold for $480.55.

We have a bunch of records we’ve been watching that we’ll be adding today to the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Here are some of them, without links, since many of these have appeared with links in previous posts:

Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction, Blue Note 1513. Two copies of this sold recently. One was a Lexington Avenue pressing that was in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $776. The other copy was also a Lexington Avenue pressing, but it looked to be in VG+ condition. It sold for $423.

The Magnificent Thad Jones Volume 3, Blue Note 1546. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG. Price: $338

Bennie Green, Walking Down, Prestige 7049. This was a yellow label, New York address copy. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $225.50

Jon Eardley Seven with Zoot Sims, Prestige 7033. This was an original New York pressing. The record and cover were both in VG++ condition. Price: $515

Huge, huge day for jazz collectibles on eBay today. Let’s start with some of the prime choices:

Jackie McLean, Alto Madness, Prestige 7114. This is an original yellow label New York pressing. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is a bit more than $500. This seller, Sweedeedee has a large number of nice items for sale today. Take a look at his other items as well.

How about this beauty from Euclid Records: Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction, Blue Note 1513. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. Both the vinyl and cover are in M- condition, and the vinyl is listed as hardly played. The current price on this one is about $650.

Also from Euclid Records: Sonny Rollins, The Sound of Sonny, Riverside 241. This is an original white label pressing. The record is M- and the cover is VG++. The current price is $135, but we expect this to sell for quite a bit more. In the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we’ve seen this sell for as much as $408.

Here’s an interesting one that closed recently. A seller was offering a copy of Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. It looked as if the vinyl was VG+ or VG++ and the cover looked to be VG, with a sticker on the front. It was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The bidding went to $995 — but the record didn’t sell because it failed to meet the seller’s reserve price. That’s a pretty steep reserve price, albeit for a very rare record. We looked up in the Jazz Collector Price Guide: We’ve had one copy that sold for as much as $1,325 — in much better condition — and the second highest price was $877, also in better condition. Anyway, we’re sure the seller will sell the record so if you’re interested you can click the link and contact him. It’s another quiet day on eBay today — not unusual for a Saturday — but here are a couple of items we’re watching:

Yesterday we referenced a bunch of records that recently broke the $1,000 price barrier. Here’s one that WILL break the barrier in a few days: Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This is an original pressing that is in M-/M- condition. It’s listed as a featured item on eBay, which means that everyone searching for jazz LPs will see it, not just those of you who are, ahem, wise enough to read Jazz Collector. We’ll keep an eye on this record for you, as well as a few others, although our posting might be limited the next few days with the Thanksgiving holiday coming up in the U.S. The highest price we’ve recorded in the Jazz Collector Price Guide for Candy in the past was $1,302, but that was a few years ago and we’re betting that this one will surpass it. What do you think?

Catching Up on eBay, One More Time

Here’s an update on some of the items we’ve been watching lately on eBay:

Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean, Inta Somethin’, Pacific Jazz 41. This was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition. We had targeted this is a potential bargain. It sold for $71. What do you think? Definitely a very nice record.

I have a feeling this one also may have been a bargain: Eric Dolphy, Out There, Prestige New Jazz 8252. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition. Price. $103.51

Charles Mingus at the Bohemia, Debut 123. This was an original pressing in M-/VG+ condition. We expected it to go for a high price and it did, also beating the dealer’s reserve. Price: $460 Read more
