Not only is this a Liberty pressing, the cover, with the Andy Warhol illustration, is only on VG condition. This one sold for $255, which is quite a change in the market over the past few years. The other big change in the market is the tremendous spike in prices of the United Artists Blue Notes, which were 1980s reissues for the Japanese market. Unfortunately, I sold a lot of my Liberty and United Artists pressings a few years ago on eBay, generally for $10 or $20 apiece, which was the going rate at the time. Fortunately, however, the reason I sold those pressings was because I was able to obtain copies of the originals and these were just duplicates.</p>
<p><span id="more-7596"></span>Also in the inbox was a link to this record: <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lionel-Hampton-10-Blue-Note-/302294347716?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&amp;ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&amp;nma=true&amp;si=%252BlKHp3q8A3aDCvqUcDjsXdsaW50%253D&amp;orig_cvip=true&amp;rt=nc"><strong>Lionel Hampton, Jazztime Paris, Blue Note 5046</strong></a>. This was an original pressing from the <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/jazzrecordcenter/m.html?item=302294347716&amp;nma=true&amp;orig_cvip=true&amp;rt=nc&amp;ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&amp;si=%252BlKHp3q8A3aDCvqUcDjsXdsaW50%253D&amp;_trksid=p2047675.l2562"><strong>Jazz Record Center</strong></a>. The record looked to be M- and the cover was probably VG++. It sold for $1,009, joining the $1,000 bin. Who wouldda ever thunk it: Lionel Hampton in the $1,000 bin. The power of Blue Note persists no matter what, it seems.</p>

<p>This year&#8217;s <a href="http://wfmu.org/recfair/"><strong>WFMU Record Fair</strong></a> is over and the dates for next year&#8217;s are now available: April 27-April 29 at the Brooklyn Expo Center again. I didn&#8217;t hear from anyone about this year&#8217;s show. Did anybody go? Want to send a report? <p>This looks like a really cool new vinyl release: <a href="http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/thelonis-monk-with-john-coltrane-complete-1957-riverside-recordings/"><strong>Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane: The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings</strong>.</a> It&#8217;s a vinyl issue, and I can&#8217;t wait to get my copy. Once I do, I will do a review as well, although that will have to wait: Heading out later today for a brief holiday, which may or may not affect my posting. This is an original purple label deep groove pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $160 range with four days left. When I think of my favorite alto players, there&#8217;s Bird, of course, then Cannonball, then a small group of a few more who were able to create a distinct sound despite the overwhelming presence and influence of Bird. This relatively short list includes Jackie, Paul Desmond, Phil Woods and just a couple of others such as Ernie Henry, who died so young. Then there are Johnny Hodges, who came before Bird and was certainly distinct and marvelous, and Sonny Stitt, who sounded perhaps the most like Bird but could play his ass off and is almost always a joy to put on the turntable, for me at least. Anyway, just some alto musings off the top of my head on a bright Wednesday morning, inspired by McLean&#8217;s Scene.</p>
<p><span id="more-7588"></span>The same seller has <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/311871168668?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&amp;ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT"><strong>Dizzy Reece, Blues in Trinity, Blue Note 4006</strong></a>. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The bidding is in the $125 range, but there are already 11 bidders and more than 30 bids. So this one will get quite a bit more action and perhaps the competition will push it towards the $1,000 bin.</p>
<p>From Italy is the popular seller bullsite2000, who has this Blue Note rarity that, quite honestly, I don&#8217;t ever recall seeing: <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/112403758932?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&amp;ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT"><strong>Lionel Hampton, Jazztime Paris, Blue Note 5046</strong></a>. This is an original Lexington Avenue 10-inch LP, and just looking at the beautiful clear pictures of the labels is enticing enough. This one is listed in M- condition for the record and the cover and is currently in the $150 range with less than two days ago, but it has not yet reached the seller&#8217;s reserve price. This must be the most expensive and collectible record in the Lionel Hampton catalog, right?</p>
<p>From the same seller is <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/112403783769?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&amp;ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT"><strong>Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590</strong></a>. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing also listed in M- condition for the record and the cover. The bidding is currently in the $925 range with less than two days left. Could this be destined for the $2,000 bin, considering the condition of the record and the reputation of the seller? I say yes. But, will even a price in that range exceed the seller&#8217;s reserve price. Stay tuned. This seller posts great pictures with his listings, which is another factor in getting high prices.</p>
<p>Also from Italy is <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/152549166041?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&amp;ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT"><strong>Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059</strong></a>. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing with the one-sided deep groove. The record and cover are listed in M- condition and the seller sure does show a lot of pictures, to help with the authenticity of the listing? He is a relatively new seller with a bit more than 100 feedbacks and is asking a lot as a starting price, in this case $3,000.</p>

This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the deep grooves and flat edge. It was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $1,727.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s one we&#8217;ve never seen before: <strong><a title="Freddie Redd" href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;rt=nc&amp;nma=true&amp;item=250715862339&amp;si=Z92Zkm5WWAE5hZOX7CySlKEEChI%253D&amp;viewitem=&amp;sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT#ht_900wt_1141" target="_blank">Freddie Redd, Session in Stockholm, Nixja Records NJL 14</a></strong>. This one looked to be in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $531. I always find it thrilling that I&#8217;ve been collecting jazz records for more than 40 years and I still come across records I&#8217;ve never seen nor heard of. I bet this is a great one, too.</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t usually track records that sell for $22, but we were watching this one because it&#8217;s symbolic of something: A great record, great cover, great label, great condition, but no real interest from a collectible standpoint, at least not anymore:</p>

For some reason it seems a shame that a record like this doesn&#8217;t draw more interest, but I guess these artists just don&#8217;t grab anyone&#8217;s interest anymore. <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>            </span></strong><span>Went to my favorite local record store the other day, </span><strong>Infinity Records </strong><span>on Long Island, and walked away with some nice things. Joey, the owner, always seems to be able to find nice jazz and he’s usually fair and reasonable with the prices. He also knows what he’s doing, unlike some dealers who rely on outmoded and outdated price guides and wind up dramatically overpricing records. Anyway, I hadn’t been to the store in a few weeks, so there was a lot of new stuff to choose from. Here are some of the morsels I bought:<span id="more-350"></span><br />

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span><strong>Kenny Drew and his Progressive Piano, Norgran MG N-1066.</strong><span><span>  </span>This is an original yellow label. It was only $8 due to the condition. The cover has some wear and a poor tape job on the top and the LP has a lot of light marks. I was hoping it would play to a VG+.<span>  </span>My hopes came half true: Side 1 plays to a VG, with a lot of surface noise, but side 2 sounds pretty good, very listenable. Plus, it’s an original Norgran, which always turns me on, and it’s got a great cover, even if slightly damaged. I’ve been scouring record stores for 35 years and I’d never even seen a copy of this before, in any condition. Just listening to one side will be a pleasure. Click here to see this copy.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span><strong>Cannonball Adderley, Cannonball’s Sharpshooters, Mercury 20531. </strong><span>This is an original pressing in near mint condition. <p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span><strong>Lionel Hampton, Flying Home, Clef MGC 735</strong><span>, and </span><strong>Airmail Special, Clef MGC-727</strong><span>. Both are original pressings in pretty nice condition. One has some cover damage and was just $4. The other is pretty close to mint and was just $8. I know that Hamp is not the most collectible of artists, but anytime I can get original Clefs in nice condition at those prices, I’m a happy guy. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span>I bought a couple of other things, nothing special, but I also left some nice items behind – I’m trying not to buy as much these days since I ran out of space in my house. Anyway, if you’re in the New York metro area, you should definitely pay a visit to Infinity. It’s in Massapequa Park, probably an hour and 10 minutes from Manhattan. <p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span>When I got home from Joey’s I had to listen to the copy I already had of Cannonball’s Sharpshooters as well as the new one to determine which one to keep and which one to get rid of. To be honest, I’ve always preferred the Cannonball LPs on Riverside to the ones on Mercury. I just felt the band was more mature and Cannonball’s playing was more self-assured by the time he got to Riverside. So, while I’ve listed to this record, it’s never been one of the ones I turn to first when I want to listen to Cannonball.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span>That’s too bad because it’s a great record, well recorded with burning solos by Cannonball. They do “If I Love Again” at a nice swift tempo with an introduction out of “It’s Only a Paper Moon” and Cannonball swings, very creatively, very distinctively. Click here to enjoy a clip. If this doesn’t get your juices going, you might want to call a doctor.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>            </span></strong><span>I still haven’t gotten that Sniper software and it’s costing me some good records. I have to admit I’m still a technophobe at heart, even though I was in the technology publishing business for 25 years and started the first Internet newspaper in the country. Getting new software and learning how to use it are still traumatic experiences. So, here’s what I missed the past few days:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span><strong>Cecil Payne, Patterns on Savoy with Kenny Dorham.</strong><span> This was another record I’ve never seen. It was an original pressing in excellent condition, with some slight mars on the cover. It went for $44. I would have paid more if I’d kept track of when it was closing. I love those old Savoy’s with the heavy vinyl.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span><strong>Fats Navarro, Volume 2, Blue Note 1532</strong><span>. This was an original Lexington Ave. pressing in VG++ condition. It went for $112.50. Considering that one of my heroes, Sonny Rollins, is on here and I don’t have an original copy of this I probably would have gone for more. Maybe next time.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span><strong>Freddie Redd, The Connection, Blue Note 4027</strong><span>. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition. It sold for $90. Seems like a bargain if the condition was accurately graded.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>            </span>Lou Donaldson, The Natural Soul, Blue Note 4108.</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>            </span></strong><span>This is a deep groove mono pressing with the New York USA label and the ear in the dead wax.<span>  </span>If it was truly original it would have the 47 West 63<sup>rd</sup> address on the label, but it is still an early pressing and it has the great rich sound of being on thick vinyl. Personnel includes Tommy Turrentine, Grant Green, John Patton and Ben Dixon.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span>Most of the music here is what would have been called funk-jazz at the time, although there are a couple of standards: “Love Walked In” and a nice ballad version of “That’s All.” Some nice playing by everyone on this LP, which received four stars from the All Music Guide. <p class="MsoNormal"><span>            </span>This copy of the record is in VG condition, although like many of the Blue Notes it looks worse than it plays. There’s some minor surface noise in spots, but it plays mostly fine with no scratches or skips. Cover is VG/VG+, with a little bit of wear around the seams.<span>  </span>Record is fairly priced at $20 plus shipping.
