Lucky Thompson, Accent on Tenor, Urania 1206. This is an original pressing with the yellow label and deep grooves. It looks to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The price is about $120. We don’t often see the Urania records getting collectible prices, but this one already qualifies for a place in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

This is another one we don’t often see getting very high prices: John Coltrane, Coltrane, Impulse 21. This is a white label promo copy that is listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The picture shows some ring wear and writing on the back, so I’d be a little concerned about that, although the seller is Euclid Records, which is usually pretty reliable. Still . . . Anyway, this one is already more than $200 and there are five days left in the auction. Does the promo copy really make that much of a difference in value? Usually with jazz records it is not that big a deal.

Lucky Thompson, Accent on Tenor, Urania 1206. You don’t hear much about Lucky Thompson anymore, nor do you often seen Urania LPs among the collectibles we watch on Jazz Collector. Thompson was a nice tenor player, an early bopper who played on some of the earliest bop dates. If I recall correctly, Dizzy hired him so that there’d be a sax player on the stage when Bird would either be late or not show up at all. How much longer to you think there will be a collectibles market for Lucky Thompson? This one is in M- condition and is in the $350 range with more than a day to go.

The pianist Kenny Drew generally has more cachet as a collectible artist than Lucky Thompson, but this one suffers from condition issues: The Modernity of Kenny Drew, Norgran 1002. This one is listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG- for the cover, but the picture looks pretty decent. You’ll usually see these covers with some ringwear. It’s a great cover, isn’t it, straight out of the Norgran style of the ’50s. This one is around $80 and is closing today.

While we’re on the subject of  Kenny Drew:

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This one is listed as an original pressing with NO deep grooves, but I had thought the original pressing had one deep groove. This is one of the more confusing Blue Note collectibles and I know Fred Cohen had a definitive answer on this, but I unfortunately left my copy of his Blue Note book on a plane a few weeks ago and don’t have the answer at hand. At the risk of being repetitive, anyone want to explain this, one more time.

My friend Steve at Roundagain Records in Providence has a few nice records closing pretty soon, including: Bud Powell, Jazz Original, Norgran 1017. This is an original yellow label, deep groove pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The price is already close to $150. Here’s another Norgran: An Evening With Anita O’Day, Norgran 1057. This is also an original yellow label pressing. The record and cover are in M- condition and the price is about $115. Here’s one more: Lucky Thompson, Lucky Strikes, Transition 21. This one is in VG+ to VG++ condition for the cover and record and it includes the booklet, which is not always so easy to find with the record anymore. This one is close to $200.

This one is more than $80 but hasn’t yet met the seller’s reserve price:

Johnny Griffin Sextet, Riverside 264. This is an original pressing and it is described as being in near mint condition. It’ll be interesting to see if it reaches the seller’s reserve price, and what that reserve price may be.

This is from another seller that also has a storefront, Vinylhighway, which owns Looney Tunes in Boston: Dizzy Reece, Star Bright, Blue Note 4023. This may or may not be an original. It has the West 63rd Street address, but the seller doesn’t mention whether it has a deep groove and the picture is unclear. My guess is that, with a knowledgeable seller such as this, if there was a deep groove it would be mentioned, so I’d be a bit circumspect if I were bidding, which I’m not. Actually, if I really wanted to bid, I’d send a note to the seller asking about the deep groove. The record and cover are VG++ and the price is around $115.

Here are some of the other items we’ve been watching that will be entered into the Price Guide:

Wes Montgomery, Full House, Riverside 434. This was an original blue label pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $255. This is always one of the higher priced Montgomery collectibles, ostensibly aided by the presence of Johnny Griiffin on tenor. 

Bobby Hutcherson, Happenings, Blue Note 4231. This was an original New York USA pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $221.40.

Paula Castle, Love Lost, Bethlehem 1036. This was an original 10-inch pressing in M- 

condition, both vinyl and cover. The price was $444.90.

Red Garland, High Pressure, Prestige 7209. This was an original yellow label with the New Jersey address. It was in M- condition and sold for $140.

Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067. This was an original mono pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. Price: $154

Gene Ammons, Jammin’ With Gene, Prestige 7060. This was an original pressing with the New York label. It was in M- condition and sold for $168.50.

Lucky Thompson, Lucky Strikes, Transition 21. This was an original pressing, with the booklet. The record was M- and the cover was VG. The price was $276.09

Art Blakey, A Night at Birdland Volume 2, Blue Note 5038. This was an original 10-inch pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG. The price was $146.50. Also, Art Blakey, A Night At Birdland Volume 1, Blue Note 1521. This was an original 12-inch pressing with the Lexington Avenue address. It was in VG++ condition and sold for $352.89.

Tadd Dameron, Fontainebleau, Prestige 7037. This was an original pressing with the New York address. The record was M- and the cover was VG+. Price: $102.50

John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. This was an original black label pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $690.

This seller, Sweedeedee, has a bunch of nice items closing in the next 24 hours. Here are a few: Gene Ammons, Jammin’ With Gene, Prestige 7060. This is an original New York pressing. Both the record and cover are listed in M- condition. It is currently priced at a bit over $100. Here’s a black-label copy of John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. The record is listed as VG++ and the cover as M-. The current price is about $210. And here’s one, frankly, we’ve never seen before: Eric Dolphy in Europe,  Debut 136. This is the original Danish pressing. The record and cover look to be in M- condition. The current price is $360, but we’d expect this to go for quite a bit more. 

We posted a little late today, so we missed a few items, which we’ll be plugging into the Jazz Collector Price Guide later this weekend. Among them are: 

Euclid Records just sold several nice records, including: Kenny Burrell on View at the Five Spot, Blue Note 4021. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition. The price was $393. Also, a black label copy of Charles Mingus, Pithecanthropus Erectus, Atlantic 1237. This was also in M- condition. The price was $333.

Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction, Blue Note 1513. Two copies of this sold recently. One was a Lexington Avenue pressing that was in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $776. The other copy was also a Lexington Avenue pressing, but it looked to be in VG+ condition. It sold for $423.

The Magnificent Thad Jones Volume 3, Blue Note 1546. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG. Price: $338

Bennie Green, Walking Down, Prestige 7049. This was a yellow label, New York address copy. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $225.50

Jon Eardley Seven with Zoot Sims, Prestige 7033. This was an original New York pressing. The record and cover were both in VG++ condition. Price: $515

John Coltrane, Coltrane, Prestige 7015. This was an original New York label. The record and cover were both in VG+ condition. The price was $327. Another copy of this also sold. This one was a VG+ vinyl with a VG++ cover. The price was $338.

John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG+. Price: $404

Sahib Shihab, Seeds, Vogue 17165. This was a German pressing, stereo copy. The record and cover were both M-. Price: $374.91.

Lucky Thompson, Lucky Strikes, Transition 21. This was an original pressing, no booklet. The record was VG and the cover VG+. Price: $152.50

Ben Webster, Music With Feeling, Norgran 1039. This was an original yellow label pressing with the David Stone Martin cover. The record and cover were both M- and the price was $134.50. Also, Ben Webster, The Consummate Artistry, Norgran 1001. This was a yellow label pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was M-. The price was $104.49.

Hal McKusick Quintet, Coral 57131. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition. Price: $49

Also, Hal McKusick, East Coast Jazz, Bethlehem 16. This was an original red label pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. Price: $127.50

A couple from Jackie Mclean. Jackie’s Pal, Prestige 7068. This was an original New York pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG++. The price was $417.30. Jackie McLean, Alto Madness, Prestige 7114. This was an original New York pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG+. Price: $610.01

Stan Getz, West Coast Jazz, Norgran 1032. This was an original yellow label pressing with the cover by David Stone Martin. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. Price: 67

Hank Mobley with Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This was a West 63rd Street pressing — not an original. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. Price: $444.99

Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. This was also a West 63rd Street pressing — not an original. The record and cover were both in VG+ condition. Price: $162.49

Freddie Hubbard, Going Up, Up, Up, Blue Note 4056. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cover were both M-. Price: $461.77

Sonny Stitt and Bud Powell, Prestige 103. This was a 10-inch LP in M- condition, both vinyl and cover. Price: $276.50
