First thing that popped up when I hit my search the other day was Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The sellers are my friends at Carolina Soul and, based on my experience, they tend to grade very conservatively. Not only that, but this record comes from the personal collection of Chick Corea, the auction for which is being conducted by Carolina Soul. Congratulations to them. The bidding on this record is already at $3,050 with more than a day left on the auction. Some readers may recall that I once owned a mint copy of Lee Morgan, which I sold 35 years ago to buy a boat. Yada, yada, yada . . . the boat sank, and I haven’t ever replaced my original pressing of Lee Morgan Candy.

I’ll point out one more from the Carolina Soul/Chick Corea auction: Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This is also an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in VG/VG- condition and the cover is graded as VG+. Bidding is at $325, and the auction closes later today. If you’re interested in cool stuff, bidding or just watching, you should take a look at the full auction by Carolina Soul.

Another big eBay seller, the Jazz Record Center, also has an auction going this week, including Mal Waldron, Mal/2, Prestige 7111.This is an original yellow label pressing with the New York address. The record looks to be in VG++ condition and the cover is probably VG+. Bidding is in the $260 range, with the auction closing on Monday. This one features John Coltrane. I have a Japanese copy, not an original. Could I be a bidder? One never knows.

One more: George Wallington Quintet, The Prestidigitator, East-West 4004. This is an original pressing that looks to be in VG++ for the record and VG++ for the cover. This one features JR Monterose on tenor sax. My dad owned this record and, fortunately, I still have it. He must have bought it in the bargain bin somewhere, probably spent about a dollar or two on the record. Thanks, Dad. Bidding on this one is at $100, with more than a day left on the auction.
The post eBay Auctions from Chick Corea’s Collection (And More) first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The same seller had Curtis Fuller Volume Three, Blue Note 1583. This looked to be an original deep groove mono pressing with the West 6rd Street address. The record and cover were listed in VG+ condition. The final price was $736.

John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was a mono pressing. It looked like it had deep grooves, but there was no mention of deep grooves, ears, RVGs or any of the other markers – not to mention it was a New York USA label. And someone had sliced the cover on the top and spine. Who would do that, and why? Anyway, despite all of those issues, the record still sold for more than $200. BTW, am I the only one who wonders why they called the record Blue Train as opposed to Blue Trane?

One more: Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This looked to be an original red label pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and probably VG for the cover. The final price was $580.
The post Four for the Holidays first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The seller graded the record and the cover as VG+. Based on the pictures, I would grade the cover VG. The final price was $776. The same seller had this one: Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040.This was an interesting one, IMHO. No deep groove, no ear, no West 63rd Street address. So, was it issued by Liberty using old labels, or by the original Blue Note using old labels? In either case, it wasn’t an original. But it was in nice condition, M- for the record, close to M- for the cover. The final price was $760. This seller also had that later pressing Introducing Lee Morgan on Savoy that we spotlighted a few days ago How Many Original Copies of Rare Jazz Vinyl Have Survived (And Other Existential Questions). When we highlighted this record, the bidding was in the $400 range. The final price was $797.99. Perhaps I (and others?) will have to adjust my expectations of what a nice second pressing might command in today’s market. Good for the sellers, and good for the buyers if they are happy.

This time of year I seem to notice more of these records on eBay: Vince Guaraldi, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Fantasy 85019. Not sure if there are more available this time of year, or if it’s just that I notice them more. Anyway, this looked to be an original stereo pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and the cover, still in the original shrink wrap. The seller had a start price of about $500 and didn’t get any bids.

Finally, let’s look at one more from those recent Carolina Soul auctions: Black Unity Trio, Al-Fatihah, Salaam Records 777. This was an original pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG for the cover. It sold for $4,849.99, which must make it pretty rare. Not something I’ve ever heard or heard of until now.
The post Seconds Anyone? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I haven’t been watching eBay as diligently during the summer as I normally do, and I haven’t actually sold anything on eBay in more than a dozen years, so this observation may be dated, but . . . . is it just me, or are sellers consistently putting a higher start price on their auctions of rare jazz vinyl? I was just updating my watch list and flagged several titles that had high starting prices and no bidders. At first I assumed it was all from a single seller. But when I opened up the listings, they were all from different sellers. Here are some of those records, starting with Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This was an original red label pressing. If you can read through the seller’s tome and ‘tude, eventually you can find the condition of the record, which was listed as NM-. The cover was described as “pretty nice-very nice” and the picture shows a pretty clean front cover, with wear on the top and some old tape on the back. To me, pretty nice-very nice translates to VG+. The bidding start at $800 and so far there are no takers.

Chet Baker in New York, Riverside 12-281. This is an original blue label pressing listed in M- condition for the record and M- for the cover. The starting price is $500. The seller does mention that there “might be a slight musty smell” which is typically not a very attractive quality for a record in supposedly M- condition.

Dexter Gordon, Go, Blue Note 4112. This looks to be an original New York pressing. The record is listed in Ex condition and the cover is VG+. The starting price is $850. For the record (pun intended) the highest previous price for Dexter Gordon Go was $760, according to Popsike.

J.R. Monterose, The Message, Jaro 5004. This is an original pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. The starting price is $800, with no bidders. This is from the seller 1molecularrman, who has several other nice items on sale now, most of which also had high starting prices but have already attracted some interest from buyers. Or, at least the listing on eBay shows a bid. These include: Miles Davis, Relaxin’, Prestige 7129. This is an original New York pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and cover. There is one bid at $500; and, Thelonious Monk with Sonny Rollins, Prestige 7075. This is also a New York label original, listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The start price was $600 and there is one bidder.

Finally, we are watching a couple of Horace Parlan Blue Notes that are closing today: Horace Parlan, Movin’ and Groovin’, Blue Note 4028. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and EX for the cover. Bidding is around $565. From the same seller is Horace Parlan, Headin’ South, Blue Note 4062. This is also an original pressing, listed in VG+ for the record and VG for the cover. Bidding is at $710.

Didn’t stop in a single record store along the way and returned home to find that there are now two new record stores a few hundred feet apart in the little town of Great Barrington near my home. One of the record stores opens next week, the other opened this past weekend. I stopped by the one that has opened and it has the feeling of a guy clearing out his house, basement, garage and attic of a lot of stuff. But there were definitely records to view and buy, particularly if you are into vocals. I came upon a lot of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, but I can’t vouch for the conditions. As of now, there is no organization to the store, everything seems to be thrown in at random. I did find three 10-inch records to buy: Lars Gullin on Vogue, James Moody on Emarcy and Frank Rosolino on Capital. They seemed in decent enough condition at the store, but when I took them out of the car I realized I would have to sneak them into the house because they smelled of mildew. I may go back to check out the store again, but I’ll be careful. Maybe next time I’ll take off the mask so I can make use of my sense of smell before buying anything. As for the other store, I’ll check it out when it opens and get back to you with a report.

Meanwhile, back in the world of eBay the pickings are slim among high-end collectibles. I’m watching just a few, including Donald Byrd, Byrd in Flight, Blue Note 4048. This is an original West 63rd Street deep groove mono. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The bidding is in the $160 range with more than five days left on the auction. Also Mal Waldron, Mal/3 Sounds, Prestige New Jazz 8201. This is a purpose label mono pressing, but I’m not seeing deep grooves in the picture so not sure if it is an original. The record and cover are listed in VG+ condition, but the picture of the cover looks VG top me. The bidding is in the $215 range with about a day left on the auction.

Finally, I see the mentions of the death of Bob Koester. He received quite a nice obituary in The New York Times. I was about to tell the story of when I went to the Jazz Record Mart for the first time in the mid-1980s and wound up with a suitcase-full of Prestige 78s. I just counted and reorganized them and the final number was 130, which was a bit more than I remembered. In any case, here’s a link to the story: End of An Era.
The post Miscellaneous Music and Musings first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Back to the grind of watching rare jazz vinyl on eBay. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. Here are items sitting in my current watch list, starting with Curtis Fuller, The Opener, Blue Note 1567. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in EX condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding starts at $500 and there is already one bidder with more than two days left on the auction. In the past, this record has made it into the $3,000 bin one time and into the $2,000 bin twice, according to Popsike. In this condition, we wouldn’t expect it to reach those lofty heights. As for my own copy, I just reorganized my records the other day and re-affirmed that I do not have an original pressing of The Opener, but rather a United Artists pressing that I purchased more than 40 years ago and probably haven’t listened to since I first brought it into my home. Perhaps I will listen today or tomorrow, if I have the opportunity. I have been doing that recently, pulling random records out of the collection and putting them on the turntable. I am preparing posts both on the reorganizations efforts as well as these random listening sessions, so stay tuned.

Here’s another Blue Note: Bobby Hutcherson, Happenings, Blue Note 84231. This is a Liberty stereo pressing. I’m assuming it is an original, but I can’t vouch for it based on my own knowledge. What causes me to question it is the presence of the Liberty logo on the back cover. From my recollection, many of the first Blue Notes after the Liberty acquisition did not have that logo, but I can’t trust my recollections as much as I used to because I seem to be in that place where I have forgotten more than I remember. But I am confident someone out there will have the answer and share it with me and the rest of the Jazz Collector world. This copy is listed in EX condition for the record and cover and the price is in the $160 range with more than two days left on the auction.

Mal Waldron, Mal-1, Prestige 7090. This is an original yellow label pressing with the New York address. The record is listed in M- condition, although the description sounds a little more like VG++. I tend to reserve M- for a record that has no background surface noise, as opposed to minimal, but that may just be a personal pique. The cover is listed in VG+ condition. This is another one that I reorganized the other day in my collection, again re-affirming that I do not have an original pressing but rather a Japanese reissue. Ah well. This one closes in three days and has a start price of $300 with no bidders yet.

Finally, here is a record that probably adorns the shelves of almost everyone reading this: Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This looks to be an original mono pressing with the six-eye red logo and the juxtaposition of Flamenco Sketches and All Blues on the back cover. The record and cover are also listed in EX condition and the bidding is in the $300 range with four days left on the auction.

This was an original New York yellow label pressing in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The final price was $536.69. I get the sense that the Prestiges are starting to get a little more interest from the collectors will to pay top dollar. These are certainly great music and packaging. I put a few of the Prestiges on the turntable the other day – Tenor Madness, Soultrane and When Farmer Met Gryce. Can’t beat it. I don’t own an original pressing of Mal-1, but I’m sure it’s of a similar quality.

The same seller had a bunch of other nice records I was watching, including East Coasting by Charlie Mingus, Bethlehem 6019. This was an original red label pressing that was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $495. Based on what I can see on Popsike, that seems to be a new high for this particular record. One more: Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1559. This looked to be an original pressing with the ear, deep grooves and New York 23 labels. The record was listed as M- and the cover VG++. The final price was $1,290. This record has sold for over $2,000 several times in the past, and I had thought this copy would be in that range, but there were only four bids. Perhaps I missed something in the listing (not that a bid of nearly $1,300 isn’t significant).

Tony Fruscella, Atlantic 1220. This was an original black label pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. This one had 19 bids from nine bidders and sold for a final price of $477.50. Previously we were talking about the harp and Dorothy Ashby, so I put this one in the queue: Dorothy Ashby, Afro-Harping, Cadet 809. This looked to be an original blue label in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. I was never a fan of the Cadet records because they felt kind of cheap to me, but I know this one has a certain cachet as a collectible It sold for $213.49.
