Let’s see what happened, starting with John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was an original deep groove pressing, with side one bearing the New York 23 logo. The seller was Funkyousounds and the neglected to mention the labels. But they were clear to see for anyone looking at the pictures. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $5,100. I’ve never thought to ask this before, but have you ever wondered why they called the record Blue Train as opposed to Blue Trane?

Speaking of Coltrane on Blue Note, Funkyousounds also had a copy of Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This one had the New York 23 label on side one, but not on side two. I guess that makes it “less” of an original? The record was listed in M-/VG++ condition with a slight warp. The cover was VG+. The final price was $1,542.79. For comparison, a copy of Sonny’s Crib with New York 23 on both labels has sold for as much as $3,500, according to Popsike.

Jackie McLean, New Soil, Blue Note 84013. This was a deep-groove stereo pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The final price was $510. I suppose I noticed it because it is pretty early in the Blue Note catalogue for an original stereo, assuming it is original.

Finally, we have Tommy Flanagan, The Cats, New Jazz 8217. Another with Coltrane as a sideman. This was an original deep-groove purple label listed in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $1,204. I can’t look at the cover of The Cats without thinking about the alternative cover that our friend Maarten Kools created for my dog Moose the Mooche. I still crack up each time I see it. Thanks again, Maarten.

The bidding is in the $425 range with three days left on the auction. The seller, the-big-game-hunter has some other nice records for sale this week, although not necessarily in the best of condition. Here’s another likely to fetch a high price: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This is a West 63rd Street pressing, listed in G+ or VG- condition for the record and a very generous VG for the cover. There’s also a big stain on the one of the labels. Bidding is in the $400 range with three days left.

The seller bearlbebop has a bunch of nice records, including original Blue Notes and Prestiges, such as Hank Mobley with Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the frame cover. The record is listed in VG+ or VG++ condition and the cover is VG+. The start price is $700 and so far there are no bidders with two days left in the auction. From the same seller, you can bid on Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore, Blowing in From Chicago, Blue Note 1549. This is a West 63rd Street pressing. The record seems to be in the VG++ range and the cover is graded VG+. Bidding is in the $550 range with more than two days left.

Finally, what would be a week on eBay these days without at least some action from the sellers 1molecularrman and Carolina Soul. From 1molecularrman we have Jackie McLean and Company, Prestige 7087. This looks to be an original New York yellow label, with a cutout hole in the cover. The record and cover are both listed as VG+. The auction closes is more than three days and there is one bid at $300.

From Carolina Soul we bring you some Coltrane, starting with John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. This is an original black label pressing, listed in VG+ for the record and VG++ for the cover. Bidding is in the $415 range with more than two days left on the auction. In the Coltrane-as-sideman category, we have Tommy Flanagan, The Cats, New Jazz 8217. This looks to be an original deep-groove purple label listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. Bidding is in the $430 range. Every time I see this record, I am reminded of the cover that Maarten Kools created for my dog Moose the Mooche, below:

Anyway, this time we will start with our friend Japhy, under the subject “A new garland for Red!” with a link to: Red Garland, A Garland of Red, Prestige 7064. This was an original New York label. The record was in VG+ condition, the cover was only VG. The final price was $1,375. I will give Japhy the honor of putting this into perspective: “Hi Al. Wanna keep goin’ with the crazy? Here’s a new all-time high for a Red Garland (as a leader) record: $1,375 for A Garland of Red. According to Popsike, that’s $375 more than the prior leader, All Morning Long, which sold for $1k back in 2012. The prior high for this particular side was $760 in 2011.”

I have one more from CeeDee before I get to my delight: John Coltrane, My Favorite Things, Atlantic 1361. This was a mono pressing listed in M- condition for the record and the cover. The pictures show that the cover was over-graded and when I see that I also assume that the record was over-graded. The other question I have about this: What is an original label for My Favorite Things? I should know this because it is one of my favorite things, and I probably have known at one point, but I don’t seem to know now. The main copy in my collection (I have three) has the same red and purple label as the one in this listing. I assume it is original, but assuming isn’t as good as knowing, so once people comment on this post I assume I will know.

The other day, I posted a picture of my dog Moose. Okay. He got some nice comments on the site, which I appreciate. But in my inbox there was a note from our friend Maarten Kools. With the following note: “Hello Al. Hope you and the missus and the “Mooche” are safe and sound. Always nice to read your post on jazzcollector . . . but sometimes it’s good to put things in perspective . . . it’s not all about ‘New York 23’ and ‘black label deep groove Atlantic.’ It’s also about us as persons with a life besides jazz . . . and in come the Pets! When I saw the Moose, as a photographer, I thought of course of “The Cats” New Jazz 8217 🙂 :). Well, here it is . . . how it should have been in the first place . . . ha!”

Attached to the post was the following picture (which Maarten has graciously upgraded from the first version, even though the first version was perfectly (purrfectly?) awesome:
