That would be Candy, Blue Note 1590. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing, that looks to be in M- or VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is in the range of $2,550. Digging deeper into the listing, there are 19 more Lee Morgan records for sale, all auctions ending in about four hours after this post will be posted here at the Jazz Collector site.

There are, of course, other sellers, other artists and other records up for auction on eBay now. Here’s on that caught my eye: Charlie Parker, For Collectors Only, Alternate Masters, Volume 2, Dial 905. This is an original 12-inch Dial featuring alternate takes of bebop classics such as Ornithology, Moose the Mooche, Yardbird Suite, a Night In Tunisia, and more. This is one you don’t see very often, and one I’ve never owned. According to Popsike, copies of this record have surpassed the $2,000 price point. This one is listed in VG condition for the record and the cover. The opening bid price is $900, with a buy-it-now price of $1,170. I just did a bunch of radio shows/podcasts on Bird, and all this music is fresh in my head, as are the stories of Bird’s tumultuous time with Dial Records and his fraught relationship with the label’s owner, Ross Russell. As much as I would like to own this album, I will have to continue searching for one at a price that fits my sensibilities, if that makes sense.

Let’s look at some new items and then catch up on some of the gems I had been watching. Let’s start with Miles Davis Volume 2, Blue Note 5022. This is an original 10-inch Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. Bidding starts at about $320 and so far there are no bidders with the auction closing in about four days. One of the things that caught my eye about this listing is the presence of an inserted booklet called “the blue note story.” Of all the Blue Notes I’ve purchased over the years, and there have been many, I have only seen this insert in one other record, a Sidney Bechet 12-inch LP. the blue note story was written by Leonard Feather and dates back to 1955, as Blue Note was transitioning from the 10-inch vinyl format to the 12-inch vinyl format. Fortunately, I have not only written about it before, I recorded the entire text, all in this post from January 27, 2009 titled, of course, The Blue Note Story. You’re welcome.

Speaking of 10-inch Blue Notes, here is Jutta Hipp, Jutta, Blue Note 5056. This looks to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is a bit over $500, with more than three days left on the auction. The seller is The Jazz Record Center, which is back with another cool auction, this one focused on 10-inch LPs, including a copy of Miles Davis Volume 2, mentioned above, but without added attraction of the blue note story insert. The JRC version looks to be in very nice condition, probably VG++ for the record and cover. No takers so far at $100.

Whilst on the subject of The Jazz Record Center, let’s get back to some of the records we were watching previously, specifically those lovely Sonny Clark’s:

Sonny Clark Trio, Blue Note 1579. Final price: $4,49.44. A new record. Well, not a new vinyl record, but a new record high, topping the previous high by more than $1,000, according to Popsike.

Sonny Clark, Dial S for Sonny, Blue Note 1570. Final price: $4,052. Another record high.

Sonny Clark, Leapin’ and Lopin’, Blue Note 4091. Final price: $2,703. Surprise: Not another record high. Popsike had a copy selling for $7,300 back in 2018, but I seem to recall that one was in dispute as to whether it sold and at what price. But there was also a copy that sold for $3,601 in 2022.

Sonny Clark Trio, Time 70010. Final price $1,525. Not quite the highest price ever recorded for this record, but the second highest. In 2013 a copy sold for $1,875, again according to Popsike.

Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This was not an original pressing, lacking the New York 23 on the label. Still, a lovely pressing to own. The final price was $1,247. A few years ago, I traded a similar copy, in lovely condition, for an original copy of Freddie Redd, Shades of Redd. And I wrote about it here Shades of . . . . . I do remember being slightly admonished by one reader (Mark, if you are still out there) for not getting the right value for my trade, but I think time has shown that they were both of probably equal value based on condition, not to mention that I had two copies of Sonny’s Crib (including an original) and had been searching for an original of Shades of Redd for 40 years.

Moving on . . . as I mentioned at the top, my watch list runneth over, so I should be doing another post over the weekend. I should say that I’m enjoying being back on eBay and posting more regularly, and not just the Jazz Collector Live as I was doing for a while. BTW is anyone listening to the podcasts? I hardly get any feedback.

A couple of other items before I bid adieu. A reader recently sent me a note asking if the listings in my Price Guide are actual sales or just listings. Here is my reply: “They are actual sales. I haven’t updated the Price guide in years because there is a much better site for that.

If you are not familiar with Popsike, you should check them out. They track everything on eBay and are current. I was doing it manually for years, but they have developed software that is far more efficient.”

I also heard from a young reader (age 22), who is looking to make contact with jazz fans who saw live jazz in the 1950s. If you are interested in sharing your experiences – Rudolf? – you can comment on this post or send me an email, or, if you’d like, write a post about your highlights and I will happily publish it here at Jazz Collector. I was born in 1953, and while I did see some jazz in the 1950s — because my Dad was a bit of a nut and took me to jazz clubs before my seventh birthday — I have no real recollections, other than seeing George Shearing and wondering how anyone blind could play the piano, and possibly seeing Miles Davis, which would have meant I may have also seen John Coltrane. But who knows if that is a real memory or just wishful thinking.

No big deal. The bigger revelation was the prices on some of the other records on the Jazz Record Center auction. Having been off eBay for a few months dealing with other things in life, I wasn’t prepared for what I considered to be a fairly drastic change in the market. Or perhaps this has been going on for a while and I hadn’t noticed? Or perhaps this is just an aberration based on the reputation of the Jazz Record Center? Or just one or two sellers with lots of money to spend? Let me share with you some of the biggest surprises that I encountered, starting with The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, Riverside 1169. This was an original stereo pressing that looked to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $787.22. Per Popsike, this is the highest price ever recorded for any copy of this record. But a stereo copy?

Not to be outdone, the Jazz Record Center also had a mono copy of The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, Riverside 320. This was the original deep-groove pressing with the blue logo and small reels label. The record was probably in M- condition and the cover was EX, with some minor marks. This one sold for $1036, more than $300 more than any previous Wes Montgomery record has ever sold for, again according to Popsike.

J.R. Monterose, Blue Note 1536. This was not an original pressing, and I extend my thanks to the reader JazzFan for pointing this out. Granted, it had the Lexington Avenue address on the labels, but it didn’t have the deep grooves. In my experience, this meant that Blue Note had some Lexington Avenue addresses left over during a later era, typically Liberty, and slapped them on a later pressing. I had a Herbie Nichols LP of the same type and tried to sell it on eBay for $100 a few years ago, but there were no takers. This J.R. Monterose record sold for $1,898.90

I was shocked to see one of the Monk records on Columbia sell for more than $1,000: Thelonious Monk, Criss-Cross, Columbia 2038.The record and cover looked to be in M- condition and the final price was $1,237.12. The rationale, such as it is, was that this was a white-label promo copy. My guess is that the folks at the Jazz Record Center were fairly surprised as well, since they only had a $75 starting price for this one.

What about this one: Thelonious Monk, Big Bank and Quartet in Concert, Columbia 2164. The cover was in the original shrink wrap and the record sealed in an inner sleeve, which is something Columbia seemed to do in those days. The record sold for $510. It had never sold for more than $100 before.

Something’s happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear.
The post What’s Happening With Jazz Vinyl? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I decided to bid on that Monk record from the Jazz Record Center auction: The Unique Thelonious Monk, Riverside 12-209. The main reason was that I really wanted the record. As you can see from the accompanying photo, the record I own is a blue label and the cover has ugly taped seams both on the top and on the bottom. Plus, the record plays with a lot of surface noise, not anything you would really want to put on your turntable. But that wasn’t the only reason for my interest in bidding. I probably haven’t bought or sold a record on eBay in at least 10 years. I wanted to go through the experience again, see if anything had changed, see if the old adrenaline rush would still be there. I also wanted to write about the experience to share with the dwindling Jazz Collector audience, which is what I am doing now.

The first thing I did was check the time that the auction closed: 6:50 p.m. my time on the East Coast. Perfect. I would definitely be home. But, just in case, I decided to see what was available in the sniping department, since that is the method I would often use in the past when I was buying regularly on eBay. I did a search of “sniping software for eBay” and a bunch of options came up: EZsniper, BidSlammer, eSnipe and a few others. I decided to try a service called GIXEN, mainly because it was free. I figured, if I’m going to bid on a record every 10 years, I may as well not pay for a sniping service. I went to the GIXEN site and signed up. It was surprisingly easy, and I didn’t have to give a credit card or anything. Good start.

I went to eBay, found the item number for The Unique Thelonious Monk and plugged it into my new GIXEN account. At the time, the bidding was about $105 with two bids. I wanted to win the record because I really did want the record, and I figured it would be a better story to tell if I did win it. But I also didn’t want to pay top dollar. After all, neither the record nor the cover was in mint condition. So, I tried to come up with a number that would give me a good chance to win but wouldn’t make me feel bad about winning. I figured I would be comfortable with $400 for the record. And If I lost it at that price, so be it.

I took a quick look over at Popsike and, to my surprise, the record has sold for more than $1,000 once, and has sold for more than $400 maybe 15 or 20 times. I figured $400 would give me a fighting chance, considering that the description said that the first track on each side begins with “sporadic tics” and the picture shows that the cover is in maximum VG++ condition, with clear wear on the bottom seam. So maybe more like VG+. I put in a bid for $411 on GIXEN with about eight hours left on the auction. I put an alarm in my phone for 6:40, 10 minutes before the auction was scheduled to close. My plan, if I was home and unencumbered, was to remove the GIXEN bid and bid live at my computer, watching the last 10 minutes of the auction to see what happens. I didn’t fully trust GIXEN, having never used it before, plus I wanted to see what it felt like again to bid live after all these years. I also didn’t want to be bidding against myself.

At 6:35 p.m. I turned the alarm off my phone and went to the computer. I clicked on the link to The Unique Thelonious Monk. The bidding was barely higher than it had been earlier, perhaps $130. I wanted to make sure I could still get a bid in, so I put in a number, maybe $150. eBay told me that there was already a higher bid. That was a feature that was not available last time I participated in an auction. Interesting. So, I put in $180. eBay told me that would be the highest bid. This was with about 10 minutes left in the auction. I didn’t actually make the bid, but I felt that was useful information. With about two minutes left in the auction, $180 would have still been the highest bid. I figured I’d probably still have a shot with my bid of $411, so I put that number in and began the countdown. With six seconds left, I hit the button for $411. With two seconds left eBay came back to tell me that I was outbid. Too late for me to change to a higher bid even if I had wanted to do that, which I didn’t. I tried and lost. The winning bid was $416. Who knows how high the winning bidder would have been. He was probably using sniping software, perhaps even GIXEN, and could have bid as much as $1,000 for all I know. I didn’t mind losing the record at that price, and I feel like I had another mini adventure to share with everyone here at Jazz Collector.

BTW, while preparing this account this morning, I looked over the other Jazz Record Center auctions that ended yesterday. OMG, they are insane. A Monk Columbia record selling for more than $1,000? A later pressing J.R. Monterose on Blue Note with no deep grooves selling for nearly $2,000. Seems like I’ve been away too long and in just a couple of months the market has gone completely nuts. Or perhaps it is just because it’s the Jazz Record Center? Whatever it is, I feel like I am now back in action, so perhaps you will begin to see me posting more frequently again. If you’ve been away for a while, as I have been, welcome back.
The post A New Mini Adventure in Jazz Collecting first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, so hopefully I can do my regular posts more frequently, in addition to keeping up with my radio show and podcasts. I’ve been in these circumstances before and expressed similar hopes so let’s see what happens. In the meantime, I’ve been on eBay this morning and put a bunch of jazz vinyl collectibles into my watch list, so here goes, starting with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is VG. There are 20 bids and six bidders so far, with the auction closing later today. The current price is $515 and I would say this one is a candidate for the $1,000 bin.

Here’s a 10-inch Blue Note, with the auction also closing later today: Gil Melle Quintet Volume 2, Blue Note 5033. This is notable, among other reasons, for the presence of the great guitar player Tal Farlow. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is VG. The start price is about $400 and so far there are no bids (and not a lot of watchers). I have a copy of this record, but I can’t recall the last time I listened to it, if ever, even though I am a big fan of Mr. Farlow, who, believe it or not, showed up at my sister’s wedding and played some guitar for the crowd. True story and I have the picture to prove it, but that story will have to wait for another day when I am back in The Berkshires.

Chet Baker, It Could Happen to You, Riverside 278. The record and cover are listed in M- condition. The start price is about $300, the seller has a low rating score, there is only one picture, and there is room to question whether the cover is a real M- based on that picture. The record has sold for more than $300 at times according to Popsike. One of the reasons I’m writing about this record is that I played a track on my radio show/podcast last week, where I focused on the Riverside label. Part 2 of the Riverside show should air this evening at 8 p.m. If you want to listen live you can go to WTBR-FM Pittsfield. Just go to “Listen.” If you can’t listen live, I should be able to post the new podcast in the next few days.
The post Rare Jazz Vinyl On eBay Again first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Let’s start with Sonny Clark Trio, Blue Note 1579. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in VG+ condition. The cover is also listed as VG+, but the pictures show it to be no better than VG. It’s from a seller in Thailand who has one feedback. The start price is $1,250 with less than a day left on the auction. We’ll see if anyone is desperate enough to take that kind of risk. Meanwhile, I have a beautiful VG++ copy that may make it to the next round of auctions. Or, maybe not.

Here’s one I can’t figure out: Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 84058. This is a West 63rd Street pressing with the ear, Van Gelder and deep grooves. But it’s also a stereo pressing. Was Blue Note issuing stereo copies of this record when it was first released in 1961? I recall seeing stereo copies of Blue Train and Art Blakey Blue Note 4003, but they had a Stereo stamp on them, and not the number 8 in front. I’m sure someone will have the answer. In the meantime, this copy is listed as M- for the record and Excellent (and Amazing) for the cover. The bidding is at $325 with about three days left on the auction.

Billy Taylor Trio at Town Hall, Prestige 7093. This is an original New York yellow label pressing. The record is listed as M- and the cover is EX. The start price is around $500 and the auction closes in a day and a half from this posting. I realize, of course, that this is an original yellow label Prestige and those are quite desirable. And I’m also a fan of Billy Taylor, not just as a musician – he was great, popular and underrated all at the same time – but as an advocate and voice for the music. But I never got the sense any of his records were valued that highly by jazz collectors. So, let’s pause for a moment and work our way over to Popsike . . . I guess I was wrong. There have been several instances of Billy Taylor original Prestige records selling for more than $300, with a top of $405 for A Touch of Taylor, Prestige 7001. If the seller were to get his asking price for this Town Hall record, it would be a new high for Taylor. As for this particular record, the highest previous price was about $167.

This one is from Clifford: Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. The note said: “$3K for a True Blue with a nasty scratch on tracks one and two, side B. I would not call that EX+!” So, yes, the record was graded EX+ and the cover was M- and the price was $3,055. With records like this, is it possible buyers have no intention of listening, and just want to have a copy, especially one with a nice cover, in their collection? Or is it just that these records are so hard to find, that even what Clifford describes as a “nasty scratch” isn’t a deterrent from someone paying more than $3,000?

Here’s an inquiry from a reader in London: “Hi. I have to travel to Houston for work from London soon. Do you know of any good record shops that I should visit for jazz?” Personally, I don’t, but perhaps someone here does.

Jim sent me a note about a record store that bought a collection a few years ago and is just getting around now to putting them on the shelves, including some original Blue Notes. Jim mentioned Lee Morgan City Lights, Horace Silver Cape Verdean Blues, and an Ike Quebec. No mention of price or condition. A few years ago, I would have jumped into the car immediately and started the three-hour journey. But, I now seem to be more in the subtracting mode than adding mode, so I’m passing the information on to Jazz Collector readers. The name of the store is Bull Moose and it is in Scarborough, ME. They also have other stores in the area, so perhaps these records are making their way across various locations in Maine and New Hampshire.

Glad everyone has been able to keep the conversation going in my absence. For the record, I am and always will be an original, no matter what anyone says. And now, back to watching original rare jazz vinyl on eBay. I have a lot of stuff I am watching now, so let’s go, starting with Frank Morgan With Conte Candoli and Machito’s Rhythm Section, GNP 12. This is an original pressing with the red vinyl. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The start price is $250 with more than two days left on this auction. I was fortunate to acquire a near mint copy of this record when I purchased the Bruce M. West collection in Baltimore. For some reason, I always considered this to be an album for the $1,000 bin. I guess the reason is that it’s really rare and hard to find, plus there’s not that much early Frank Morgan on record. When I did a search on Popsike, however, I discovered that the top price for this record was $331, and that was back in 2006. I guess it’s just not a Blue Note.

This one is a Blue Note: Lou Donaldson, Swing and Soul, Blue Note 1566. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cover are listed in VG+ condition, although that may be generous for the cover. Based on the pictures, I would rate it VG. The start price is $1,000 and there are no bidders with more than two days left on the auction. This one has sold for as much as $1,575 in the past, according to Popsike, but the condition was a lot better. I will be surprised if this one gets the asking price, but our Jazz Collector world is full of surprises these days, right?

Hank Mobley with Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This is a West 63rd Street pressing, which, if you follow the logic of the thread on the previous post, is not an original original, if that makes any sense. An original original would have the Lexington Avenue address. In any case, the seller grades the record and cover as VG+, but that is about as clean a cover as you will normally see for this record. The bidding is in the $700 range with more than two days left on the auction.

Miles Davis, Steamin’, Prestige 7200. This is an original New Jersey yellow label pressing. The record and cover are both listed as VG+. Bidding is in the $160 range, with the auction closing today. Another Prestige: Tadd Dameron, Fontainebleau, Prestige 7037. This looks to be an original New York pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. The start price is about $180 and so far there are no bidders with more than two days left on the auction.

By now, I’m sure most of you have heard the news that Wayne Shorter died. When I think of Wayne Shorter records, I think of the Blakey and Blue Note era, so I would have to say those are my favorite recordings. But that’s the era I love in general. I’m curious what post-Blue Note and post-Miles recordings some of our readers would recommend. Perhaps with links to YouTube?

Been very busy around here. Plus, my computer crashed for a few days. Very disconcerting, when you are wondering whether you are going to be able to recover all of your files and settings, which I was able to do, fortunately, with tremendous online support from Apple. Now that we’re safely back in action, let’s catch up on some of the stuff we were watching on eBay before we were so rudely interrupted, starting with Booker Ervin, Groovin’ High, Prestige 7147. This was an original blue label mono pressing that was part of the Jazz Record Center auction we were watching. The record and cover looked to be in M- condition and the final price was $360, which was a new high for this record, according to Popsike. I am somewhat surprised to see the demand for these blue label Prestiges to have increased so much in the past few years, but I am also pleased to see it for a player like Booker Ervin, who, in my view, is quite underrated and always produced some very nice records.

Just to show that Groovin’ High was no fluke, there were also these from the JRC auction: Booker Ervin, The Freedom Book, Prestige 7295. This was an original yellow label mono pressing that also looked to be in M- condition. The final price was $392. This was not a new high for The Freedom Book, which has sold for more than $800 on one occasion. And Booker Ervin, The Space Book, Prestige 7386. This was an original blue label mono pressing. The record looked to be M- and the cover was probably VG++. The final price was $289.99.

Whilst on the JRC auction, let’s fill in the gaps of some of the records mentioned in the previous post and assorted comments. There was Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225, with the drill hole through the center of the cover and the label. This one sold for $3,023. There was Bill Evans, Explorations, Riverside 351, with the misprinted cover. This one sold for $539. There was Teddy Edwards, Good Gravy!, Contemporary 3592. This was an original deep-groove mono pressing that was in M- condition for the record and probably VG+ or VG++ for the cover. This one sold for $133.50.

Of course, we were also watching other auctions. Here is one that caught our eye. Sonny Rollins and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Barclay 84057. This looked to be an original French pressing of the early Rollins Prestige 12-inch compilation. I had never this version and the cover is quite cool. Both record and cover were in M- condition and the start price was about $200. There were no bidders, so I would expect to see this back soon, perhaps at a lower price. I was listening to a playlist I had compiled a while ago and “Slow Boat to China” came on. Sonny was just 21 or 22 and, man, could he play. I am currently reading (and thoroughly enjoying) the new biography Saxophone Colossus: The Life of Sonny Rollins by Aidan Levy. Definitely a must-read for Sonny fans, which means it is a must-read for Jazz Collector readers, because it is impossible to imagine that anyone reading this far into this post is not a Sonny fan, right?

Let’s look at some random jazz vinyl we are watching and have been watching on eBay, starting with Joe Henderson, Page One, Blue Note 4140. This looked to be an original pressing, listed in VG or VG+ condition for the record and G+ for the cover with water damage on the bottom. There were 13 bidders for this record and the final price was $439. From the same seller there was Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was an original West 63rd Street deep-groove pressing, listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The final price was $2,475. Over the years, when people have contacted me for advice about selling their collections, I have always emphasized the importance of condition. While it is still of great import, of course, it seems that there has been a shift in the market and collectors are more willing to pay high prices for records in less than great condition. We’ve all been noticing this for a while, I’m sure, so it probably requires an adjustment for those of us buying or selling records to be aware of this pretty fundamental change in what jazz collectors are looking for these days. As with most trends, you wonder if this one will last and will become kind of a new standard in our little world of jazz collecting.

Then again, perhaps there are some bargains left on eBay, if you consider something like this to be a bargain (I do): Gigi Gryce and the Jazz Lab Quintet, Riverside 229. This was not a first pressing, which would have had a white label. But it was an early pressing with the blue labels, reels and mic logo and deep groove. The record was listed in VG condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $34.33. If this same record, in this, was a second pressing on Blue Note, the final price would have been quite a bit higher than $34.33 don’t you think?

Finally, I always get a kick out of seeing records I’ve never seen before. I’ve been going to record stores looking for jazz records for more than 50 years, plus I’ve been watching eBay closely for 20, so it doesn’t happen very often, but I’ve never seen this record: Curtis Counce Quintet, Exploring the Future, Dooto, 247. I assume this is an original pressing. The cover is pretty trashed and the record is graded VG. The start price is $320, the auction closes later today and so far there are no bidders. Interesting sidemen with Harold Land and Elmo Hope. Per Popsike, the top price for this record was $471, and that was for a copy still in its original loose seal. That one sold in 2021. Do you think the buyer broke the seal and listened to the record, or preserved it in its original packaging? Knowing what I know about collectors, my educated guess is that the record has never been opened or played.
The post Condition is Still Critical . . . The start price is about $900 with eight days left on the auction. According to Popsike, there have been about 10 instances of this record in the $1,000 bin. We’ll see what happens with this VG cover. Another Blue Note: Fred Jackson, Hootin’ ‘N Tootin’, Blue Note 4094. This looks to be an original New York USA pressing, despite what the listing says. The record is listed as VG and the cover as VG+. The start price is $700 and so far there are no bidders, with the auction closing next week. High expectations for both sellers, IMHO, but we’ll see.

Staying with Blue Notes for a change 🙂 Art Taylor: AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was an original deep grow West 63rd Street pressing, review copy in VG++ condition. When we wrote about this a few days ago (Book’s Book, Cattin’ and Some Arts), the bidding was at $83. The final price was $877.
The post Blue Note Sunday first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
