First off, that whit-label promo copy of John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, Impulse A-77 wound up selling for $2,275, which put it close to the top price ever recorded on Popsike for any copy of A Love Supreme. Also had an eye on Lou Donaldson, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5021. I know I had a copy of that record and I know that I don’t have it any longer. For the life of me, I can’t remember why or when I sold it, but I do know I would really like to have it back. This one was listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover, although part of the listing on eBay described the cover as G. I think that was an error because the cover looked pretty nice. The final price was a reasonable (IMHO) $304.22. If I’d been paying closer attention I might have actually made a bid on that one. But, alas, I was not, which I take as a good sign that perhaps I have learned to be less compulsive and obsessive in my golden years.

It isn’t often these days that I run across a jazz record that I haven’t seen before, but here’s one: Rene Thomas, Meeting Mister Thomas, Barclay 84091. This was an original Mono pressing from France. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The final price was $227.50

We’ve got some interesting jazz vinyl in the Jazz Collector watch list on eBay, including a couple we’ve never seen before. Let’s start with one we’ve seen many times, but still don’t own: Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore, Blowing in From Chicago, Blue Note 1549. This is an interesting listing because the seller was able to post really clear pictures of the record and the label. It also raises an interesting question for the Blue Note diehards out there: One side of this record has the New York 23 address, the other just has West 63rd. Is it an original pressing. In my book it would be, but I didn’t write the book on Blue Notes. In any case, this one is listed in VG+ or VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG for the cover and the price is in the $225 range. The auction closes later today and the bidding has not yet reached the seller’s reserve.

Now for the two that are new to us:

Annie Ross, Annie by Candlelight, Nixa 504. This looks to be an original Canadian 10-inch pressing. Not only have I never seen this record, I’ve never heard of the Nixa label. Anyone want to help us out with some info? This record is listed in excellent condition and the cover is described as very good. The start price is about $220 and so far there are no bidders.

This is a French pressing we’ve never seen: Rene Thomas, Meeting Mister Thomas, Barclay 84091. This looks to be an original pressing from 1963. The record is listed in Ex minus condition and the cover looks to be excellent. The bidding is in the $130 range but it has not yet reached the seller’s reserve price.

Here’s a listing lacking in either knowledge or integrity: Hank Mobley, No Room For Squares, Blue Note 4149. This is listed as a “Blue Note Jazz LP Original Pressing,” while the listing clearly shows that this is a mere Liberty pressing. The seller has a start price of about $150 and so far there are no bids. We assume it will stay that way, but you never know. Look at the bidding on that Hank Mobley Blue Note 1568 reissue that got out of hand before the seller graciously decided to pull the listing. Not sure if he did that because he was expecting problems, or because he realized something wacky was going on. But, the listing did clearly state it was a reissue, so he didn’t need to do that. Or did he?

Here are a few worth pondering:

Don Sleet, All Members, Jazzland 45. This was an original orange label mono pressing. The record looked to be VG++ and the cover was listed as VG. The price was $94.

Mike Cuozzo with the Costa-Burke Trio, Jubilee 1027. This was an original pressing and the value is certainly aided by the presence of Eddie Costa. It was only in VG condition for the record and the cover and still sold for $108.50.

Bill Perkins, Just Friends, Pacific Jazz 401. This was an original pressing sold by the Jazz Record Center. It was in excellent condition — the words “immaculate” and “exceptional” were used in the description. It also benefitted from the presence of strong sidemen, in this case Art Pepper and Richie Kamuca. The price was $330.55.

Johnny Hodges, Perdido, Norgran 1091. This was a black-label pressing, which I think is an original. At some point, we will need to do in Norgran what we are doing in Blue Note and Prestige and come up with some definitive information about yellow and black labels, logos, etc. This was in beautiful M- condition and sold for $90.47.

Rene Thomas and Bobby Jaspar, Thomas Jaspar Quintet, RCA PML 10324. This was an original Italian pressing and, frankly, I’ve never seen or heard of this LP before. It looks like a nice cover and the players are certainly excellent, so I imagine it is quite a find. This one was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover and sold for $700. If anyone has more insight on this record, please feel welcome to share it.
The post Jazz Vinyl Price Update: No Blue Notes, But Nice LPs first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

For those of you keeping score at home, here are some of the items we’ve been watching on eBay:

Tal Farlow, The Tal Farlow Album, Norgran 1047. This is an autographed copy in M-/M- condition. Price: $249.95. This was one of those records I planned to bid on but figured the price would go too high because of the condition of the LP and the presence of the autograph. The first bid was $249.95 and I expected it to go way up from there. But nobody else bid, including me.

The Farlow record was from the seller Jazz5060. We’ve been watching this seller because he consistently has good records on eBay. Here are a couple more, one already sold, one that failed to meet its reserve price and one coming up over the next day or so.

Sonny Stitt, Jazz At the Hi Hat, Roost 418. This was an original 10-inch LP in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $224.50

This is one from Jazz5060 that failed to meet its reserve price:

The Rene Thomas/Bobby Jaspar Quintet, RCA 10324. This was in M-/VG++ condition and fetched a top bid of $493 but did not sell.

Also, Jazz5060 has some great items coming up, including this one:

Dexter Gordon, Doin’ Allright, Blue Note 4077

Here are some other items we were watching:

Billie Holiday at Jazz At the Philharmonic, Clef 169.
