I’ll be off line for the next week so I won’t be able to post. Not that it will be any different than a normal period between posts, but this time my absence will at least be planned. Everything’s fine. Just enjoying a little holiday. In the meantime, I will leave you with a large batch of records to watch so you can all comment to your heart’s content. Let’s start with one of the records that would still be on my want list, if, indeed, I had a want list: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This looks to be an original deep groove pressing listed in M- condition for the record and EX+ for the cover. Bidding is in the $200 range with almost three days left on the auction. I have no idea how this record has eluded me all these years, but it has.

Here are some records closing in the next day, starting with Bobby Hutcherson, Dialogue, Blue Note 4198. This looks to be an original New York USA label. The record is probably in VG+ condition and the cover is graded a strong VG. The seller says he is a strict grader and is only interested in records in VG+ or better condition. I would suggest, based on the pictures, that this one may have slipped through the cracks because strong VG is not the cover that I’m seeing. Bidding is close to $400.

From the same seller: Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 4058. This one has the West 63rd Street labels, but no ear and no deep grooves that I can tell from the pictures. Plus it is in shrink wrap. What would that make it? Liberty pressing using older labels? The record and cover are listed in M- condition. Bidding is in the $550 range.

One more from this seller: Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This looks to be an original deep groove west 63rdStreet pressing. The record is either in VG or VG+ condition and the cover is listed as strong VG+, although I don’t understand where strong comes in based on the pics. Bidding is close to $900.

Also closing today: Richie Kamuca Quartet, Mode 102. This looks to be an original pressing The record is listed as VG+ and the cover as G+. Start price is $155 and so far there are no bidders.

Introducing Lee Morgan, Savoy 12091. This is an original red label pressing. The cover has punch holes on the side. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is probably VG, based on the pictures. The auction closes in about three days and so far there are no bids at a start price of about $450.

Clark Terry, In Orbit with Thelonious Monk, Riverside 271. This seems to be an original deep groove pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $130 range with more than two days left on the auction. The seller, vinyl-house-uk, has a lot of other items on eBay this week, including the Rollins record on Period as well as Lee Morgan, Lee Way, Blue Note 4034. This is a weird one, with the West 63rd Street label on one side, the New York USA label on the other, and deep grooves. The seller describes it as an original first pressing, which doesn’t seem to be the case. But what is it? In any case, the record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition and the bidding is in the $140 range with nearly three days left.

One more for the road: Sonny Rollins, Newk’s Time, Blue Note 4001. This looks to be an original pressing of the vinyl with the West 63rd Street address and the deep grooves, but it has the second, dark blue cover. The record looks to be M- and the cover VG++. The start price is $1,000 and so far there are no bidders with more than four days left on the auction.

Well, I never made it to the 43rd Annual Jazz Record Collector’s Bash yesterday. I hope those that did make it had a good time and perhaps found some jazz vinyl or shellac gems. Instead, I wound up reorganizing the records in my New York apartment. Don’t ask. There was no need to reorganize, I just enjoy doing it. It gives me a chance to re-explore what I have and discover records I either forgot I owned or purchased or, for some reason, never got around to putting on the turntable. Yesterday, the record that wound up going on the turntable for the first time was Richie Kamuca Quartet on Mode, Mode LP 102. No idea why I chose this because Kamuca is not someone I’ve really listened closely to very often. Turns out to be an excellent record, with Carl Perkins on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Stan Level on drums, recorded in June 1957 in Hollywood.

Kamuca is a very bold and confident player in the Pres/Zoot/Getz mold and, on this record, is especially strong on the ballads and mid-tempo numbers, particularly “Nevertheless” and “What’s New.” I can’t say I was surprised at the quality of his playing, because he’s always been respected by people that I respect. I just never took the time to listen closely. I was somewhat surprised at the quality of the recording on the album, which is excellent. I need to take the time to listen to more records on the Mode label to see if this quality was consistent across the label. Or perhaps our readers will have their own experiences and observations to share. A quick search tells me this record in M- condition, as my copy is, will sell in the range of $300 o $400. Now that I’ve given it a careful listen, I can say pretty clearly that if/when I begin selling off my collection, this will likely be one that stays with me. I can also trace when I purchased this record: It was from the Bruce M. West collection in Baltimore, circa November 2013. I can tell from the distinctive date etched in the upper left hand corner on the back. Kind of a nice way to keep track of the amazing records I acquired in that collection.

Staying on the West Coast, and catching up on a previous jazz record on eBay, I was fairly shocked to see the final price on the Jack Sheldon Quartet Jazz-West record were were watching. When we wrote about the record (Listings and Musings on Rare Jazz Vinyl), it was in the $200 price range, and we kind of assumed it would end up at perhaps $400 or so. We were wrong. Jack Sheldon, welcome to the $1,000 bin. The record wound up selling for $1,111 with 13 bids and 6 bidders. Wow. I do not own an original pressing of this record, but I do own a reissue, which is in The Berkshires and which I will also put on my turntable this week. It’s definitely fun newly discovering or rediscovering old music on records that are already in your own collection, yes? Perhaps we should all go through a reorganizing exercise every once in a while.

I was perusing eBay last night and there was another copy of Getz/Gilberto, Verve 8545, also a stereo pressing, also in M- condition. It sold for $37, which is higher than normal. The other one from bobdjukic is at $219 and closing later today. While perusing, I also came upon this nice record: Stan Levey, Grand Stan, Bethelehem 71. It was sitting there at $25 and there were no bidders and I was contemplating placing a bid even though I already own a copy in M- condition. I think the seller missed an opportunity here: This is one of those records where if you know it, and you know the identities of the musicians, it becomes much more interesting. Among the musicians on this record are Sonny Clark and Richie Kamuca and it is, as you’d expect, a terrific record. It’s also not so easy to find, certainly tougher to find than Getz/Gilbert0. This one was in VG+ condition and sold for $27. The highest price we’ve ever seen for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide is $90.
The post Grand Stans first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

If it’s Monday, it must be time to check in on the weekend’s activity on eBay. A few high-priced items sold over the past few days, but my general sense is that activity is beginning to slow down for the summer. At the bottom, I’ve listed a few items that failed to meet reserve prices this weekend. In some cases, the reserve prices may have been a bit high, but in others the items were selling for bigger prices just a few weeks ago. We’ll continue to monitor pricing and keep you posted. Anyway, here are some of the items we’ve been watching:

Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4081, in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $1,625. Of course $1,625 is a high price for any record, but we anticipated this one might break the $2,000 barrier, considering its rarity and the condition.

Curtis Fuller Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address on the label in VG++/VG++ condition. Price: $401.88

Jim Chapin Ensemble featuring Phil Woods, Prestige 213. This was a 10-inch LP in VG+/VG++ condition. Price: $202.49

Sonny Rollins, Sonny Boy, Prestige 7207. This was an original yellow-label in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $79.99

Sonny Stitt, 37 Minutes and 48 Seconds, Roost 2219. This was an original pressing in VG+/VG+ condition. As we anticipated, the price was not too high. Price: $39
